Future Tata electric SUVs could get 4x4 capability

According to a media report, Tata Motors is planning to introduce four-wheel drive technology in its future electric SUVs. Models positioned above the Nexon could be considered for this upgrade.

Currently, there is no four-wheel drive option offered on any of the Tata models. Compared to a traditional AWD/4X4, electric motors allow easier implementation of providing power to all four wheels of a car. Each wheel or axle can be powered by individual motors eliminating the need for a central driveshaft or a gearbox.

Tata Motors aims to have 10 electric vehicles on sale by 2025. This will include existing electric versions of models like the Tiago, Tigor and Nexon as well as all-new models.

Welcome back Tata Sierra! Martin Uhlarik did give some hinds on Sierra in one of his recent interview. Vivek Srivatsa also suggested to keep the hope on this. An electric 4x4 SUV under 4.3m will be perfect for Sierra nameplate. Fingers crossed!

Most likely this will be not a proper 4WD but like Ford or Land Rover vehicles with Terrain Management System or Response. But this will be a good move and will put competition to Mahindra and Toyota.

Looks like an electric Harrier/Safari is in the cards after all.

Will be far simpler to implement than the hardware of a traditional 4x4 system (in a petrol / diesel car) for sure. Depending on how manufacturers offer AWD / 4x4 on electric cars, it's either an additional motor on the rear axle, or a motor for each of the 4 wheels. I think Tata will go the AWD route with a motor on each axle.

Good. That is the only way the Sierra would be getting AWD at all, since Tata is a slacker when it comes to drivetrains.

Waiting eagerly for this.
An AWD new gen electric SUV from TATA.
And considering the developments in ev tech, these SUVs should have good range (600 - 700km +) too with fast charging.
Fingers Crossed.
