VW Taigun and Skoda Kushaq score 5 stars in Global NCAP’s updated crash tests

VW Taigun and Skoda Kushaq score 5 stars in Global NCAP’s updated crash tests-taigunkushaqresulttablerelease.jpg

The first round of results under Global NCAP’s more demanding crash test requirements for India were published today with the Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq scoring top star ratings for adult and child occupant safety.

The Taigun and Kushaq are twin models sharing the same platform and produced in the same plant. The models achieved five stars for adult and five stars for child occupant protection becoming the first models ever to achieve five stars for both adults and children.

Global NCAP’s updated crash test protocols assess frontal and side impact protection for all tested models, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), pedestrian protection and side impact pole protection assessments are also required for vehicles scoring the highest star ratings.

Assessed in their most basic safety specification, with ESC fitted as standard, the models demonstrated a stable structure in the frontal impact, adequate to good protection for adult occupants, and marginal to good protection in the side impact scenarios. Child occupants received full protection during the front and side impact.

More information on the latest protocol requirements can be found on the Global NCAP web site. (https://www.globalncap.org/resources).

The Kushaq and Taigun were already one of the best choices in the under 20 Lakh market and the 5 star safety rating will certainly be the icing on the cake, for what is an excellent duo of cars. Finally, a Compact SUV with great engines and safety.

Re: VW Taigun and Skoda Kushaq score 5 stars in Global NCAP’s updated crash tests

This is great !!
VW and Skoda now joins Tata and Mahindra for having 5 star cars in their portfolio.

Even Manufacturers like Maruti, Honda, Toyota, Renault and Nissan have at least one car with a 4 star rating.

It's a shame that only Hyundai & Kia don't have a single car with even a 4-star rating considering the volume of sales that they do.

Most importantly, this ought to be a good reply for all the VW/ Skoda 2.0 "weaker sheet metal" naysayers. But on the other hand, this doesn't exempt them from not working on their problems with these two cars like interior quality, aircon & after sales. All of which are far from 5 stars imho.

This would greatly bolster their marketing efforts and help them take the battle to the Koreans !

That's some feat achieved by Skoda / VW 2.0. It is time to think before paying hard earned money for that India's largest selling >4m crossover.

Safety rating helped Tata to improve sales of their Nexon and Tiago. Skoda and VW too can capitalize on 5* rating to improve the sales. Now more people are AWARE about GNCAP test and ratings.

So the Kushaq tested had no side / curtain airbags, but the Taigun did? How is it that they have received a combined rating then?

The model with 6 airbags was used only for side pole test

Re: VW Taigun and Skoda Kushaq score 5 stars in Global NCAP’s updated crash tests

It really feels happy to know that the Skoda/VW group has not compromised on their safety promise and has proven it. Congratulations to them and all the proud owners of Kushaq/Taigun. This is a day for all the owners to be happy for the decision they took to go for these cars . My only wish for the group is that they start thinking further and get ADAS next.

Now coming to the actual test, I see that the side and curtain airbags have opened up in the pole side impact test but not in the side mobile barrier test. Is it due to the impact point or due to variant difference? May be ron178 can help dissect the test results and help all of us understand this result better.

Re: VW Taigun and Skoda Kushaq score 5 stars in Global NCAP’s updated crash tests

To voluntarily send the cars to be tested under the updated testing protocols and come out of it as the first-ever made-in-India cars to achieve 5-star ratings in both adult and child protection — what a phenomenal achievement for Škoda Volkswagen India! I hope they get the Slavia and Virtus tested as well next.

Please see the testing video - while Kushaq's side impact test was without curtain airbags, the Taigun's pole test was with side & curtain airbags.
If they tested two different cars with different equipment, how can both of them get a combined rating?

And I thought GNCAP tested the base version of all cars - how does the Taigun get tested with Side & Curtain airbags then? Its base version doesn't get those.

Let's put it like this! After all that cost cutting, they HAD to have one solid USP apart from driving pleasure to compete with the Seltos and Creta. This will certainly confuse people more.

Thanks for pointing out. I read through the assessment criteria and it mentions that as long as the model with side protection(airbag) is sold at least 30% of the sales volume for this year, the results for pole side impact are valid. Next year it will be 50% and all it would take is for the manufacturer to make 6 airbags standard from next year or at least offer it on the Ambition variant as well. And the Kushaq and Taigun are considered to be one model in the rating so thats why different cars are used in different tests.
