October 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Here's how domestic players have risen in last 4 years taking away share from the Japanese.

Looks like Hyryder/Grand Vitara has started with decent numbers (about 10K together) but I am unable to see who is taking the hit. Creta and Seltos are down a little but still are selling good. So are the sales for Ertiga/XL6 etc.

I don't think the 15 to 25L segment has reached its full potential yet. In fact, it will be the fastest-growing segment in the coming years. There is room for many more cars here each with its own USPs, especially in the 4.3m 22L top variant SUV market. Right now we have Creta which positions itself as a luxurious SUV, Seltos with a sporty and feature-rich approach, Vitara and Hyryder geared towards efficiency and Germans that appeal to enthusiasts and safety-conscious. A master-of-all-trade kind of vehicle is still not out there and buyers are having to compromise on one to get another and sometimes end up going for other segments instead (just see how many XUV 700 owners really use the third row). As this segment matures further with new cars and model updates, I expect it to be the biggest segment of all out there.

Re: October 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The 2 key highlights for me from these statistics -
  1. ALTO - The "ALTO" keeps on ruling - but is that the F8D Alto? Or the new AltoK10 makes a significant contribution to that number? Why I ask - I am yet to see a single new Alto K10 on the streets of Pune. If this K10 performance continues - and the F8D is now going to be discontinued - we might actually see the Alto getting dethroned in the coming months.
  2. XUV700 - Where are the numbers? The huge waiting duration, huge demand. YoY sales of Mahindra have made a really marginal improvement, especially glaring given the sales numbers and waiting durations of these cars that have been advertised so far. Only Bolero & a distant Scorpio are making an entry in the top sellers.

Re: October 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

It is interesting how the Verna, despite being nearly the oldest car in the C2 segment (only the Ciaz is older) is doing consistent numbers. This could be attributable to it being the only convincing diesel offering in the segment. This is why Hyundai is clinging on to diesel, the way it is.

Re: October 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I personally think the fun times for the automobile industry and the markets in general is drawing down with people starting to become more circumspect in their spending as global recession kicks in. The spending in the Creta-Seltos segment will be the last to trim down but the era of the value cars is near, i.e. EVs with the government sponsored discounts and other freebies on offer.

Spot on. I believe Honda can fit in perfectly here.

1. Safety – Honda can build a 4-star-rated car
2. Reliability – It needs no justification
3. Space - Honda is always known for their space management. 4.3mm Honda car may have more space than rivals
4. Efficiency –both 1.5 NA and turbo petrol provide decent mileage. Nothing less than the competition
5. Performance – Honda may not able to match 1.4 GDI/1.5 CRDI/1.5 TSI engines but it does have a turbo engine
6. Interior/features list – This is one area where Honda has to work on

Re: October 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The optimist in me hopes that the 190something numbers for Jazz means a facelift is incoming. The realist in me knows it is probably lack of demand. Shame - it is such a competent product, totally killed by its horrible pricing. Amaze is single handedly keeping the lights on at Honda.

M&M - XUV 700 is averaging 5-6k per month, Thar even less. Wonder why a year+ wait is justified?

Harrier twins doing barely enough to swim in the turbulent waters. Will the facelift change the tide?

Hyundai is the clear winner across all segments. It has a presence across all price ranges, and all of them are pulling in great numbers.
