So the original concept of the thread was that if one were to wish to remain minimal and yet have the ideal all purpose vehicle (s) in one’s garage, then which would it be.
For extreme conditions like floods, land slides, etc. not much can be done. I had a Creta back in 2020. We had flooding of similar proportions in August 2020. Just beside my car's parking was a neighbour's XUV 500. It was a total loss. Due to the pandemic and work from home I wasn't in Bangalore.
Many cars were lost to floods then. I doubt there can be a stock all purpose vehicle to cover for calamities like the one mentioned.

The reason I will still prefer this combo over anyother is because of my personal usage and preference of driving cars with minimal body roll and good handling. I know I wouldn't be driving to the woods or wherever a 4X4 is a non negotiable.
That being said, I'm still awaiting the Jimny launch.

Re: What is the best car-garage combo in a country like India

In your achievable case, what about the daily driver, off-road/no-road/monsoon/people mover use?

I don't have much interest in off-roading as such, but if I have to add one, it will be a Suzuki Jimny.

Re: What is the best car-garage combo in a country like India

In an achievable scenario for India, I would choose:

Crysta: People Mover
Any gen of 530d: Good balance between cruiser and fun car.
City: Daily Driver

And the bike would be an FZ-25, which provides a good balance between touring, commuting and fun.

If I have to go to the dream garage scenario with no budget contraints, it would look like this:

Lexus LFA and Mclaren F1 LM- Dream cars. ( I don't like the term 'Show Off'. )
Honda NSX- For that occasional back-road drive.
Corvette C8 Z06- Track car
F10 5 series with diesel I6- Mile Muncher
11th generation Honda Civic- Daily Driver. (One of Hybrid, Si and Type R.)
Triumph Daytona 675R (Track) and Yamaha FZ-09 (Naked). (I like the exhaust note of 3 cylinder bikes)

I am no off-road or bike touring enthusiast, so no big offroaders or big bikes in my list.

Re: What is the best car-garage combo in a country like India

I am pretty happy with current garage. Takes care of touring, city runs and having fun at the same.

1. 2022 Jeep Compass Model S Diesel 4x4 AT
2. 2020 Skoda Rapid Tsi Onyx AT
3. 2018 Aprilia SR150 Race

My 2019 Renault Duster AWD is also there, however it will be sold soon so not added to the list.

With no budget cap,

1. RR Sport or Velar for touring
2. Jeep Wrangler for weekend off roading and touring to extreme areas
3. Porsche 918 for track fun and highway runs
4. BMW 320D for city runs
5. Mini Cooper JCW for wifey

Re: What is the best car-garage combo in a country like India

I am one car away from having the car garage of my dreams.

1. Daily city driver and occasional road trip: Mini Cooper JCW 3-door 2017 F56. This is bone-stock, no mods at all and has been an utter dream to own. This little guy has the ability to make me smile every time I go for a drive, and is surprisingly practical - goes over the worst of speed-bumps without a fail due to the short wheelbase, and is a hoot to drive in traffic. Only downside is the FWD layout which is limiting in a few ways.

2. Practical family car + luggage machine: 2017 Camry Hybrid. This one is up for replacement now, because of the ever-growing size of Mumbai's speed-breakers. It tends to bottom out quite often and I would love to replace it with an EV SUV. My dream is to get a Ioniq 5 to replace the Camry, the Ioniq is the ultimate daily family car, IMHO.

Between the Ioniq 5 + Mini JCW I think most bases are covered, buuuut I have a 3rd in the garage now which makes things tough to decide.

3. The last-petrol-car-so-let's-make-this-a-good-one: 2018 Audi S5. This was a spontaneous decision last year, but I don't regret it. At that price point there were barely any "sports cars" to acquire - the M340i is a cool 30% more, and we don't get affordable 911s in India, and the R8 is way too much of an attention grabber. The S5...just fit. It is AWD, goes like a madman (under 4s 0-100), and sounds subtle while doing so. It is a helluva way to arrive at any event, and gets a lot of questions from those in the know. I just wish Mumbai had better roads to drive this beauty in, the very low GC means I am constantly looking out for potholes, driving diagonally on speedbumps and more. With the Mini, I am always reaching 100% of its limits, but the S5...I feel like I barely hit 60%. Of course, it'd be lovely if Mumbai had a track, no?

There's my dream garage though:

1. Tiny fun daily city driver; the Mini JCW is what I have, I wouldn't mind a TT or a electric Mini or a superhatch even.
2. Large electric comfy car: the Ioniq 5 is the dream. We have the Camry today
3. One car that doesn't make any logical sense. The dream is always the 911, but I am grateful for our S5.

Re: What is the best car-garage combo in a country like India

Achievable Spend (50L)

1. Tata Nexon EV Prime Jet Edition - 18.58L
2. Mahindra Scorpio-N 4x4 D AT - 29.09L

Would use the Nexon as a daily driver/beater car within the city and the Scorpio N on the Highways and during road trips. Would also take out the Scorpio N for those offroad events with friends once in few months. Would spend the remaining 2.5L on modifications like damping, tyre upgrades, dashcam, etc.

No Monetary Restrictions

1. Mahindra Thar P HT AT - 18.90L
2. Jeep Compass P AT - 33.65L
3. Toyota Legender 4x4 AT - 56.31L
4. Range Rover Autobiography LWB P - 3 74Cr

The Thar would be used as an offroader vehicle for those offroad session or to travel within city during monsoon. Here, in Mumbai, roads become like offroad tracks after a few rains. Would use the Compass as daily driver within the city limits. Being Gasoline-powered, would not have to worry about the DPF being choked. Out on the highways, would use the Legender as a daily driver. The Range Rover would be used exclusively for the Road Trips or to places where making a style statement would be necessary. Didn't choose the german counterparts as daily driver cause reliability and less downtime would be the utmost priority.

Four cars in the same body style (I know some are SUV, and the others pure offroaders but!), isn't that a bit excessive?

Re: What is the best car-garage combo in a country like India

For Achievable spend!

I’d stick to a 3 car garage whatever the scenario and it goes like:-
  1. Skoda Octavia
  2. Hyundai Alcazar
  3. Suzuki Ignis

If Money is no object!

Like I said, always a three car garage
  1. BMW M5
  2. Land Rover Defender
  3. Mini Cooper JCW/Polo GTI

Re: What is the best car-garage combo in a country like India

Realistic and achievable:
  • Ford Fiesta 1.6 S (pre-worshipped, of course)
  • A luxurious car such as the Lexus ES (probably pre-worshipped) or a Skoda Superb (new).

Money no constraint:
  • An S-Class Maybach (V12) or a Bentley Flying Spur (W12)
  • A Porsche 911 GT3 (with shortened gear ratios; money is not to be considered )

PS: I'd buy a Lotus Europa S any day if it was available.

Re: What is the best car-garage combo in a country like India

Not many folks chose an EV or a hybrid as one of their vehicle preferences, and I am surprised, considering there is a major thrust in India towards these. At the affordable end, I'd certainly like to have a Nexon EV or a Kona, and at the money-not-an-issue end of the spectrum, perhaps a Cybertruck.

Re: What is the best car-garage combo in a country like India

I'm going to go for a realistic budget and a garage I hope to have within the next 5 years. I've experienced that thinking too much about dream garages can feel a bit disappointing.

So, The budget - 50L

The cars
- A Polo TSI AT (already have it, the best possible city runabout)
- A chauffeur driven City/Ciaz (Commuting in heavy traffic takes the joy out of driving
- A Thar 4x4 AT

Now, a bit speculative but still achievable if things go right for me, an Audi A4 instead of a City.
