Depreciation needs to be calculated per year as well as the loss is real irrespective of high or low usage. It is also a good indicator for affordability and personal finance calculations I.e. can I spend rs 1 lakh per year or 3 lakhs per year ?

KMS done = 107000 - 87000 = 20000
Bought price : 1,05,000
Sold price : 78,000
Depreciation per KM = 1.35 Rs / KM
Depreciation per year = 9K per year (< 9%)

As you can see even though the depreciation % is similar I lost a lot less money on the Zen per year.

This is an interesting thread, but a lot has changed in the markets in the last 2 years that impact depreciation:

1. Popular cars have seen price hikes, so depreciation on a used car is relatively minimal. A friend recently sold his 2.x lakh driven Innova 2007 for some 3L - he bought it for 10L!

2. BS6 and other norms have seen diesels attract a premium - we picked up our Tiguan for 33.5L on road in 2018, today a 2018 vintage Tiguan TDi is quoted at around 25-28L!

3. Manufacturers have left / discontinued some products / have heavy discounts - some cars like Fords, or less popular cars like the S-Cross / Audi's have more depreciation than their peers (Figo v/s Swift, S-Cross v/s Creta, Audi's v/s Mercs, etc.)

Anyways, from our side:

Interesting thread. I would like to point out one small mistake in these calculations. There is no logic in calculating full OTR price for depreciation.

Insurance is paid only for the first year and is revenue spending in nature. So for the purpose of depreciation, it is better to deduct insurance cost from initial OTR price.

This will especially make most used car prices unattractive, especially in states like Kerala. Here it is much better to go for a new one in most cases.
