Wow! An Indian brand of yore raking up the coveted team bhp COTY is surely gonna make the waiting list more painful for those eager to get a slice of this haute curry!

Notwithstanding the hits and misses of the service, the “Big Daddy” looks have surely tantalised the taste buds of the ever growing clan of UV enthusiasts!

The scorpio-N certainly looks like the most value for money option these days. For 30L onroad, you are getting a rugged body on frame 4x4 SUV that has all the necessary offroading hardware a normal person would ever need. You also get a surprising amount of tech inside and great on-road dynamics along with a powerful and refined engine mated to a reasonably decent automatic. The rear seats, tumble mechanism and bootspace do feel like an afterthought but for this price point it should be something you are willing to compromise with because really, what other option do you have? I'm definitely not paying 20L extra for the soon to be phased out Fortuner 4x4 or for the fragile Skoda Kodiaq with it's thirsty petrol engine.

The Tiago EV is quite a surprise, coming in at the 3rd spot when most have not seen it in flesh or even read media reviews, let alone test driven on their own. Just shows how far our acceptance of EVs has come, how much trust Tata has earned by being able to capture the EV market in India, and the superb price point they launched the Tiago ev at. Eagerly looking forward to how it does in terms of sales next year.

Although I'd have loved to vote but it's really sad to see that there is not a single performance vehicle on the list for a true enthusiast this year. From the first vehicle down to the last, all are underpowered, 'feel-less' compromises.

None of the vehicles that came out this year or the previous year or the one before it and so on had the bigger engines or feel of the cars that came out till 2012 or so. I can understand the economy aspect of the Indian population but the moment one moves up to the upper segment (BMW, Merc, etc.) it really doesn't make sense to be ready to spend upwards of 60 lakhs on a car and then cheap out on fuel and worry about the average consumption of the vehicle. I mean if average is that important, why even bother stepping up to that segment. There are vehicles excelling in that area with good enough creature comforts.

I'll sum up my observations as under:

1. Mostly cars (performance variants especially) these days are automatic with no manual option available.

2. Most are fwd so that itself defeats the purpose since they're no Integras or Type Rs. vRS is way too overpriced for being a FWD.

3. RWD have smaller turbocharged engine performance variants (Not Naturally Aspirated) that feel underpowered and lack further tuning potential.

4. Missing hydraulic or manual steering and widespread use of electric steering - How does the driver get the real time feedback? Newsflash - HE DOESN'T!

5. Touchscreens and no analog buttons or controls which are a big nuisance and distract when driving on road since you cannot operate by feeling the buttons. Rather you have to take your eyes off the road to 'touch' the right option. And they said cars are safer these days, lol.

These are just to name a few. So, I don't see value in 'settling' for a new gen compromise that offers nothing extra (other than marketing gimmicks) for twice or thrice the price. But that's just my opinion

Twin models like HyRyder + Grand Vitara, Virtus +Slavia were at the disadvantage as their votes got split. If counted together, the Tiago EV would be displaced by these.

Also, clearly, the tbhp COTY does not have much correlation with the sales/ marketshare, it’s just a mindshare of the active tbhp users.

Interesting to note that the Maruti newcomer shared with Toyota i.e., the Grand Vitara/Hyyder combo grossed a total of 20.72% votes. Not bad considering the COTY title went for 27.93% votes.

Also noted that Hyryder scored most votes over Grand Vitara which is opposite to the pattern of votes for Baleno/Glanza twins. Guess people like to have a Toyota badge over Suzuki on the pricier twins.

Isn't Hyryder/ Grand Vitara produced at the Toyota factory? I will say our members are intelligent, that they gave Votes not to the badge but to the manufacturer who is producing, Toyota in this case

I really doubt it is due to that. Except the 1.5 Strong Hybrid package everything else is Maruti Suzuki - mechanical/electrical components, seats/fabrics, plastics etc are all from Maruti Suzuki vendors. And also Maruti Suzuki's production line or QC is not inferior to TKM's. Production of Hyryder/Grand Vitara was shifted to TKM as they had capacity to spare and Maruti still makes the Brezza on the line which made Vitara Brezza/Urban Cruiser which scored a decent 4 stars.

Toyota 3 year and 100000KM standard warranty is difficult to ignore when making a choice between the twins, which is better than Maruti's. A better service experience at Toyota dealerships also helps. Hyryder or the Glanza it doesn't matter who made it but for some it matters who sells it.

M&M has been able to create a strong buzz and attraction around its products. Well deserved for the ScorpioN to come out on tops in this forum. The slim margin also goes to show how close the fight was (and how exciting 2022 was )

Voted for Hyryder.

I missed voting since I was stuck with some office work for the last few days.

Voting for one car from the list is really difficult since all have some uniqueness in them right from Tiago EV to Hyundai Tucson.

Reasons for Hyryder.

=> AWD capabilities
=> Great fuel economy numbers
=> Reliability from Toyota. (learned from Innova. still the best no matter what ODO says)
=> Feature rich
=> Overall good package
=> Toyota ASS

An interesting feature about Mahindra's hattrick is that all the three cars are improvisation of previous monikers. Of course, one might argue that XUV700 has little or nothing with XUV500. But we know it's not the case. Thar, XUV, and Scorpio as improvisations winning COTY should ideally give hope to other manufacturers to restart previous products with lot of passion. For instance, Renault can try to bring back Duster in a much improved offering, and it will not set the charts on fire, it can win Team-BHP COTY too

If by performance, you mean rapid acceleration from speed 0, then I would assume, you haven't driven an EV ever. In the EV all the torque is available from the start and if you floor the pedal, no turbo petrol, Diesel or turbo diesel can match the acceleration an EV will provide.
