A friend of mine is interested in getting an audio system for his car. Any recommendations on where he should buy from and models? Budget is around 10-12K

The Pioneer DEH - P5550MP looks pretty good.

Hey Zen,

Call Autoking @ 2446.2805. The guys name is Rupesh. I have been going to this place for accessorizing my cars since 1990 and the service he offers is excellent. He is a very honest and simplistic dealer of car stereos et all. I just installed an entire subwoofer, amp and speaker assembly from him last week.

Thanks GTO. Just curious.. what did you go in for and how much did it cost you?

The database of dealers, suppliers sounds like a great idea!

The tape is upto you, make sure its MP3 compatible, Coz then instead of a shuttle with 12 discs you can get a frontloader and play more music than all 12 CDs put together, if you get my drift. But the speakers i would suggest the Kenwood 7"x10". It has really good bass and all round good clear sound. Its a few hundred more than the Pioneer 6"x9" range but worth it.

ya, an MP3 compatible system makes much more sense. Thanks for the tip about the speakers.

I have an MP3 disc changer in my C Class and can store up to 600 songs in the 6 cd changer...Thats a trip to Goa for a week without bothering to change the discs even once. Buttttttttttttttt if you see the changer right now, you will find it loaded with atleast 3 regular format cds. Even though MP3 offers huge storage capability, I find the quality lacking (2 subwoofers in the back), and it is a damned pain to look for a particular song on a cd which has 150 of them.

On the brands front, I am a believer of Pioneer car audio systems. None of my cars in the last 10 years have had anything but Pioneer - be it head units, speakers, woofers or amplifiers.

The 5550 has been discontinued, with the launch of the 5650. Some marginal improvements. I believe its priced in the range of 8000 - 8500

same here gto, nothing but pioneer,
now planning to put a lcd screen(necvox 5.6 inch) and a converter to the existing cd player(so it starts playing vcds, but will stop playing mp3) total cost 5k, is it cheap or expensive?

hey i have another doubt, most of my friends use comp cd rom drives in their cars, they connect it to the deck using the front headphone outlet, my question is can this "converter" be put onto a cd rom, so i can use it to see movies, so that i dont lose my mp3 playing capacity

also whats the cheapest vcd/mp3 player
and a dvd player?

GTO. u could use playlists. why not a hard drive based system in teh car. if ipod can use hard drive for joggers then i suspect they are stable enough to beused in a car. i use my laptop in mumbai and while flying. have not crashed one for 3 years yet. hard drives have come a long way.

after my last Pioneer got stolen, i got myself a Pioneer KEH-P7035..
Features:
Dot-matrix Organic EL display, MOSFET 50W X 4 (max), EEQ, SFEQ (Sound Focus Equalizer), 5-mode preset equalizer, 2-mode custom preset equalizer, Source EQ memory, 3-band parametric equalizer, 3-mode selectable loudness, 2-way crossover: HPF/LPF, ASL (Auto Sound Levelizer), Pop-up rotary volume
Direct Sub Drive, 3 RCA preouts [ Glossary ]: selectable ( front+rear+subwoofer/ front+rear+non-fading)
Level indicator, Supertuner® IIID, Multi-CD control

Pioneer KEH P7035

hooked up with a 12 CD changer and pioneer oval at rear and stock Ikon ft speaker

nothing fancy but can keep any PRO DJ mesmerised for couple of hours with the options, costed me 9780 Rs (conversion from dirhams) got it from Dubai, it has 1 or 2 year international warranty also

And yes using Pioneer since 1996 and nothng comes close for quality VS VFM
