re: Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!

What BMW has done with the X1 is unbelievable. This will be a walking model of ultra foolish snobbery. It's buyer would look like an uninformed hack who just had spare money lying around. It would not convey any level of sophistication whatsoever. Who is the target audience here? The informed entry level luxury buyer will surely spit the showroom cappuccino in disbelief once they see the specs and drive the car. Between taking out the regular 3 series and this lunatic X1, it would appear BMW secretly wants to increase sales of the 2 series. I can simply see no other explanation.

re: Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!

Besides the question of engine size and power, the X1 is fairly well loaded. It offers
  • Adaptive LED headlights (which make a real difference when driving at night)
  • Automatic operation of tailgate
  • Pano sunroof
  • Driver assistance system with lane departure warning and active feedback, automatic emergency braking etc.
  • Sliding, reclining and folding rear seats
  • Paddle shifters in the MSport versions
  • Active seats with massage function on the M-Sport
  • BMW Connected car package
  • Comfort access (which is a segment standard but was not available even in the 3 series pre LCI)
  • Harman Kardon sound on the M-Sport
  • Performance control features to modulate engine, braking and other parameters while cornering
  • Huge dual screen single panel infotainment with wireless charging, Android Auto & Apple Car Play
  • Parking assistant with the wonderful reversing assistant which can retrace your last 50 meters of driving
  • Full complement of safety features

The biggest surprise to me is that BMW has gone with Tubeless tires in this X1! The previous generation X1 and pretty much all their other cars have run flat tires. One more piece of evidence to show that for this segment (entry luxury SUVs) BMW are going more mainstream, to satisfy what the buyers want most in the segment - plusher ride, creature comforts, lots of electronic gizmos and top notch safety.

Spec Sheet Attached.

The reality of the matter is that with the restrictions on useful life of Diesels, there is a segment of buyers who are going to gravitate towards the petrol variants. If BMW does not offer those, they risk losing that customer to Audi (which only does petrol engines) or Mercedes (which offers a competent GLA Petrol). The downsizing trend is not specific to BMW though - Mercedes is using the 1.3 litre turbo petrol co-developed with Renault Nissan on the GLA and A class limo petrol editions, although they do offer that with a bit more power and torque at 160HP & 250NM (The same engine was til recently available on the Nissan Kicks Turbo variants offering 156 PS and 254 NM starting at around Rs. 12 lakhs!).

The 3 cylinder petrol engine is a non-starter for me at least. Skoda and VW sedans which cost less than half have more power and torque than the X1. The heart of the car is the engine and adding bells and whistles cannot in any way compensate for that. Audi Q3 with its 190 PS power and 320 NM torque is now the obvious choice of the enthusiasts in this segment. Plus the proven quattro gives you the ability to take the Q3 to ladakh and hills.

re: Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!

All the folks who bought an outgoing F48 just 3 months back are happy lot today. Thank you BMW for being a good sport.

Since the 20d of the new model now has 218 bhp, bringing it here would unsettle the lineup. Also it was known that the dct was going to edge out the Aisin auto box.

I hope people who think a good engine, a smooth gearbox, and a tad more power than whats enough to make a damn good car did not wait for this launch.

But the new X1 is a feast for everyone else who want more and more lcd screens, powered tailgate, and a massage seat! The icing on their cake is the now inverted DRL.

1) Except for the entry level cars, in every segment, diesel cars outsell their petrol counterparts by a large margin. So BMW would have been better off not offering a petrol variant.
2) If they had to offer a petrol variant, they should have at least priced it competitively. A 136PS engine is NOT equivalent to a 163PS engine. The segment standard is 185 PS, as in Audi Q3, Volvo XC40 and the previous generation X1. Underperforming a laggard (GLA petrol) by almost 20% and going ahead justifying it, is just rubbing salt on a raw wound
3) Mercedes GLA portfolio is like the menu at Barbeque Nation. The vegetarians get a 'just ok' spread to keep them from feeling disappointed at Rs 699, but the non vegetarians get the 'real deal' for just a little extra at Rs 799.
Likewise the 190PS diesel engine is the 'real deal' in the GLA line up, the 163 PS petrol engine is just for the unfortunate people who can not relish the diesel version, for a little less sticker price.
Where the BMW disappoints is that, there is no 'real deal' here, despite being horribly overpriced.
The "features" are like desserts in a buffet, they are a welcome addition over the main course, but are never a substitute for the main course. Frankly, if someone needs a feature rich 'aqeduately' powered 5 seater, he/she will as well go for a MG Hector for less than half the price.

re: Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!

Got to check out the BMW X1 today at the Joytown in Bangalore:
Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!-x1-1.jpg

Launched in two variants, X Line (petrol) and M Sport (diesel). Here is a M Sport finished in M Portimao Blue:

sDrive18i X Line gets a three-cylinder 1.5L petrol producing 134 HP and 230 Nm and the sDrive18d M Sport gets a 2.0L four-cylinder diesel producing 148 HP and 360 Nm. Maybe that's why no engine badges on the boot:

Multi-spoke 838 18" alloys shod with 225/55 rubber:

A blurry pic of the side profile:

Dual-tone interior of the blue car:

Three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel. Note: The downward paddle shifter says "BOOST". The Boost mode puts the X1 in an aggressive setting for a short duration to help with overtaking. Only the M Sport variant gets the Boost mode:

A 10.25" instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment display joined together, as is the norm in cars today:

Navigation display:

A look at the curved display:

The M Sport gets a 12-speaker Harman Kardon speaker system:
Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!-x1-12.jpg

No more roatary knobs on the centre console. It now has the drive selector, engine start/stop button, drive modes, parking brake, parking camera, and the iDrive vehicle settings menu. There's also audio control:

For me, the looks are great, but the engine is a petty move.
Not so BMW like.

Audi made a similar mistake with A4 sometime back with a puny 1.4 tsi, atleast that engine was having 4 cylinders. They learned their lesson eventually, I'm sure bmw will too.

I believe they have removed the badge on purpose for the event, because the car that was displayed earlier for the sales executives, had the badge denoting the engine.

Obviously, it is a lot about product positioning. 😊

Previous generation X1 was closely spaced WRT X3, except that the X3 is a rear wheel drive; Interior space and the engines were almost similar.

Now, to add value for X3 customers, either you scale up its engine or scale down the X1’s engine.

In the bargain, F48 owners like me will be delighted. Sadistic pleasure you might say! 😅

Exactly. While people scoff at the entry level luxury cars missing out on features available in the likes of Tucson/MG hector etc., deep down everyone knows the real deal is the engine performance and refinement with the likes of old X1 or the new Q3. That is the real brawn and brains which make luxury cars what they are. When Merc shocked with its 150 hp petrol, it still offered a stonker of a diesel option side-by-side which still balanced the GLA out. But the brand touting “sheer driving pleasure” offered nothing to offset the “below” entry level engine options, it is shocking to say the least. Maybe the saving grace for the petrol maybe E20 compliance, do we know if at least it offers this benefit?

re: Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!

This is the first BMW I won’t be caught dead in. I don’t like the huge grilles on their 7 line-up neither did I fancy the fwd stuff they came up with recently. But somewhere I knew that they would probably make me smile behind the wheel. Now, a BMW that will get eaten up alive by a C segment car is pure blasphemy. Imagine driving the 136hp petrol on a weeklong road trip with 4 people and luggage. I’d keep on swearing at the logo on the steering wheel the whole way through.

Sheer Driving Pleasure. Not.
