re: Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!

Echo the sentiments and disappointment around the double downgrade - powertrain and gearbox.
Incidentally I was test driving the 330Li today in BLR and the sales advisor dropped 2 bombs and one ( atleast to me) good news -
First the bad news
1. 530/630D have gone out of production ( as mentioned in the M340i vs 530D thread)
2. Subsequent launches/ facelifts will see further engine downgrades to meet CAFE norms.
He said the sales team was nervous about the initial response to the new engine- gearbox specs of the X1 as a couple of bookings were cancelled within minutes of the launch.
The good news -
1. Subsequent launches / facelifts will come with tubeless tyres ( and not run flats)

Would be good to know if others are picking up the same news.

Was looking at the Continental site and found this: https://www.continental-tires.com/ca...s/ecocontact6q

Looks like a very average comfort and mileage oriented tyre choice. BMW is steadfastly moving away from driving enthusiasts with their powertrain and tyre choices!

Seems to have puncture-resistant slime / sealant though. Does this mean the new X1 doesn't have a spare at all, or is there a space saver donut?

46 lakhs ex-showroom for an X1!?
What is happening? I remember when 3-series sold for 40 lakhs...when was that? Am I old?

re: Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!

Pardon my ignorance but is the diesel engine same but in a reduced state of tune or the engine itself is different? If it is the former, how easy/difficult it is to remap it to 190 ps tune? Regarding the petrol, it is probably the first BMW with a greater than 9 seconds 0-100 timing. Skoda Kushaq 1.5 tsi costing about a third does it half a second quicker. The only solace should come from iX1 if reasonably priced.

re: Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!

BMW is supposed to be a driver's car, but whats happening is unbelievable.

Looks getting ugly, power going down. Personally, look wise I used to like BMWs over competition but this grill is not digestible. Even the competition operating tow segments below (TATA / Mahindra) are improving their Turbo petrol / Diesel lineup and at-least they have made significant progress on spec sheet but a 55L on road car with 130 Hp/230 NM is pure cheating.

Accumulated brand leverage will not last long if they keep doing this. VW is offering 1.5 TSI at 40% of price

re: Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!

The only word that comes to my mind is Shame!! A BMW, the so called Driver’s car, The enthusiast’s choice being launched with an engine with just 134 Hp engine, with a diesel mill producing just 148 hp.

The brand has associated itself with “sheer driving pleasure” yet we have this underpowered beauty at our hands, a Creta has more power than this, and a Scorpion will leave huffing for air.

As Indian carmaker’s have upped the game with their engines, I guess the luxury marques are focusing on touchscreens instead.

Also an M badge with that diesel mill is just such a shame, that it makes me question my admiration for BMW.

Interesting generational changes for the X1:
  • At first it was ugly, but RWD.
  • Then it became beautiful, but FWD.
  • Now it is just ugly and FWD. Plus with those downgraded engines to match.

re: Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!

This segment has turned around on its head now. Bmw has gone all show and no go while Audi seems to have made a good case for itself.

With 190hp and Quattro, the Q3 will make a very strong case for itself since it will also be the cheapest with most of the important features included in the package.

Those focused on luxury and snob value will be better off with the Merc GLA. The 220d 4Matic is the pick of the bunch in this segment with a great drivetrain to go with its interiors. The petrol GLA200 is also considerably more powerful than the X1.

The X1 may end up a distant third in this generation looking at the offerings. Even the XC40 is a much better proposition than the X1 now. For a brand that is known for driving dynamics, this is extremely underwhelming.

To summarise -

BMW X1 - great interiors and equipment, mediocre drivetrain, no AWD, moderate pricing

Mercedes GLA - great interiors and equipment, great drivetrain (diesel), AWD, expensive

Audi Q3 - average interiors and equipment, great drivetrain, AWD, VFM

If BMW is targeting first time luxury buyers who will never take the car offroad... the GLA is tough to beat.

They are clearly not targeting enthusiasts or value conscious buyers who will negotiate and get a Q3 instead.

It has a space saver that’s tucked away beneath the false floor of the boot, like it should be. Reasonable boot space of 480 litres, actually.

What we are witnessing is just sheer tragedy in the name of pollution control for the so called CAFE norms. A well designed safe and sleek driving machine has to be detuned while the cement concrete mixer and dumper trucks ahead of it not only spew smoke, but rake out tremendous amounts of construction dust which then disperses in a wider area than your average car.

How is this a new addition because F48 had sliding and reclining rear seats. Those even had electric button in the boot to fold down rear seats which was later removed

re: Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!

Good looking car with nice quirky interiors. I do not like the following:

1) The powertrains are disappointing. The magical engine-ZF 8 speed combo was reason enough to prefer a BMW over similar competitors. Both the powerful engine and ZF 'box is lost. A 3 cylinder petrol at 50+L? Really BMW?

2) Where is the iDrive controller?

3) Quite overpriced for what it offers.

re: Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!

Just learned that the new X1 18i launched in Australia has the same 1.5L engine, but that engine has been tuned to produce 154 HP (115 KW). It produces the same 230 NM of torque. I wonder why BMW did not provide this tune for the Indian market. This particular tune would have put the X1 at least roughly on par with the Mercedes GLA base petrol.

One other thing that is interesting is that the fuel tank capacity of the X1 is only 45 litres! With a small turbo driving this large car, city FE and therefore full tank range is not going to be stellar. While driving fast on the highway one can expect a range less than 500 km to the tankful for the X1 petrol - this is pretty low for a car meant to do road trips in.

re: Next-gen BMW X1, now launched at 45.90 lakhs!

When is the media drive for these new cars? Really want to know the performance on road.

While the launch engine specs are a downer I do feel that it could make case for some non-enthusiast first time luxury car buyers. It is big in proportions, packed with features, has a badge and looks decently SUVish (subjective).

Let’s see how the market responds.
