Re: Toyota Land Cruiser LC300 and Lexus LX600 coming to India soon

At that price, why wouldn't anyone strive for a Range Rover instead of a Toyota LC - has better off-road pedigree, is luxurious, has famous heritage - plus is now Indian owned also

Agreed Toyota reliability is better, but Rs 2 crore plus vehicles are not going to be mile munchers or will rarely ever taken for off-roading - they are a statement by the owners. I feel a Range Rover makes this statement better, plus is a luxury brand!

So it's not just me who thinks Toyota has lost it when it comes to pricing it's products.

I am not entirely sure who would end up buying these cars - though I understand they are incredibly reliable - but yet again, people with so much money to spend usually also do not keep their cars for longer periods of time.
So a European ultra luxury car loaded with the latest tech at half the price OR a Toyota with bulletproof reliability with barely basic luxury and tech features for twice the price. Looks like a no brainer - no?

There's a thing called 'Veblen goods', where the demand actually goes up when prices increase, instead of vice versa.

Luxury items typically fall in this category. I guess this vehicle also does!!

I understand the phenomenon - but what I fail to understand is how can a brand like Toyota justify pricing the car at this price point. Are they trying to NOT sell their cars?
At this price point only a handfull of people would even consider this. Especially the ones who've been burnt earlier with the awful reliability or complexity of the European cars.
Toyota is known to make their cars via their super efficient methods of production which brings their car's manufacturing costs substantially lower than anyone else in the market. Toyota never comes up with innovations and takes the safe approach of seeing what works in the market and then make it super reliable. Till the time they actually manage to do it most of the European counterparts also learn it to some extent.
Having said that, with this kind of pricing - they should clearly differentiate themselves by completely eliminating their regular cars (read under Rs. 50,00,000/-) and then see how the market reacts to the Veblen Goods.
Wait a minute - wasn't Lexus made just for that?!?!?

On a lighter note, Please check the convoys of state and central ministers or MPs. I guess they are bored of their existing LC200s and fortuners. That's the primary clientele for these cars. Quite a lot of politicians who swear by the LCs and will get them come what may.

Re: Lexus LX500d priced at Rs. 2.82 crore in India

The pricing may seem obscene for a Lexus, but the fact is that high end vehicles are on back order for months as of today. The buyers are not affected layoffs and the like, the Cochin dealership for JLR has a nearly a year's worth of orders it seems. I can see those buyers getting the Lexus, the same must be true about the Tier 1 cities.
