Technical details are sparse, but the Syros is expected to get both ICE and electric powertrains.

The Kia Syros will have a more premium positioning than the Sonet, and will pack in several other premium features such as ventilated and powered front seats, drive modes, traction modes, leatherette upholstery and a Bose audio system.

Motorbeam media claims that the Syros will be more the 4 metres in length. Is it true? And if yes, then I think it would be priced closer to the Seltos than the Sonet.

Aside, I don't get this concept from Kia. What exactly do they wish to achieve with this supposedly 'premium' offering when their Seltos itself is struggling to complete with the segment toppers!

The only possibility of it being slotted between Sonet and Seltos is if it's hybrid or EV.
Even though before Autocar was sure about it being above Sonet, now they say Syros too will be under 4 meters length.

Autocar started this news that Syros will be between Sonet and Seltos. Motorbeam and everyone else is just following that and writing stuff according to that initial news. But if you look at the above link, Autocar has now clearly said (or changed their stance?) that it will be under 4 meters.

I'm repeating what I said before, the only way this will be above Sonet is if it's a Hybrid car or EV. Design-wise it defnitely follows the style of Kia EV3 and it's other cousins, but it is a small car and more likely to be Kia's version of Exter.

Where is the room to position one more SUV between 3.99m and 4.3m, 4.15m probably, where already 2 are there one each from VW and Skoda? Unlikely in my view too.

Shapewise it looks like Exter with the thick C pillar, although hidden. Considering the platform sharing strategies between Hyundai and Kia for their all 3 mass market SUV/MUV/Crossovers, it is likely going to be the 4th shared launch based on Exter.

Otherwise the only other marketing strategy I see is how MSIL is marketing Brezza and Fronx with similar sizes (except height).

Projecting it as a Sonet+ category car and then pricing it as the Exter is the key agenda here.

Even if they try to position it between Sonet and Seltos, the can easily do it following Maruti's strategy for hatchbacks. Furthermore, Sonet and Seltos sales are on a downtrend. So a new product can always help.

Kia Syros will be shown to the public for the first time at the Bharat Mobility Show in January.

Likely to play in a premium compact SUV space, with exterior design reminiscent of the erstwhile Skoda Yeti.

It features a boxy design with a flat roof and an upright rear, in order to liberate maximum cabin space.
Some styling cues on the Syros remind us of other Kia models like the flagship EV9 SUV and the Carnival MPV. A distinctive feature is the window line that rises up with a sharp kink for the rear quarter glass area. The break in the window line at the B-pillar, finished in body colour, is reminiscent of the erstwhile Skoda Yeti.

The Syros will come with a five-seat interior layout, and it will be big on space – both rows and cargo area included. Equipment such as a panoramic sunroof, ADAS and other segment-rivalling features can be expected. Kia will first introduce the Syros with a petrol engine.
An EV will join the line-up in the latter half of next year.

Yes, no diesel as Kia is in the radar for emission fines. Kia is experimenting with Hybrids globally.

But doesn't diesel emit less CO2, be fuel efficient and be helpful in meeting CAFE norms?

Ofcourse, not as good as BEV in helping to meet CAFE norms, but being sub 4m, Kia would most probably plonk in the 1.2l NA petrol engine.

How this gamble plays out, only time will tell - Above Kia Sonet, at a premium pricing.

Kia Syros to get 1.0 turbo-petrol, 1.5 diesel engines.

No naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine that's available on the Sonet.

Price announcement could take place in January, likely at the Bharat Mobility Show where the SUV will be shown for the first time to the general public.

The Syros will come with the tried and tested 1.5-litre diesel engine that powers many Kia and Hyundai models in the country. This engine delivers 115hp and 250Nm of torque and sees duty in the Sonet, Venue, Seltos, Carens, Creta and the Alcazar in our market. As for gearbox options, the Syros diesel will come with a six-speed manual and a six-speed torque convertor automatic just like the one seen on the Sonet.

The Syros will also come with a 1.0-liter turbo petrol unit good for 120 hp and 172Nm. It will come with a manual as well as a 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox.

Kia should consider offering the 1.5 NA IVT combo as well given that the 1.5 D AT from the Seltos is offered, and this car will be positioned above the Sonet. This combo should feel a lot powerful in a smaller/lighter car which will suit those who don't want to deal with diesel DPF headaches or DCT potential failures. It's a missed opportunity IMHO if Kia is not doing that as it can really draw great numbers for them.

That simply means it will be positioned BELOW the Sonet, not above it.

I would place my bet on the fact that it's a direct competitor to Exter.

The logic is simple - currently there's a clear gap in the Kia portfolio in that slot.

My view is that Sonet would be "downgraded" , with 1.2l engine getting more variants and the turbo petrol and diesel getting lower "top" models so as not to clash with the Syros because Sonet is now the older model.

TBF, after looking at it, is it going to be the Kia version of the Hyundai Exter/Inster/Casper (ICE and EVs)?

Looks pretty nice, I love the Skoda Yeti like side profile. Probably going to come with similar engine options as the Exter..
