Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023

Big shoutout to .anshuman for shooting these pictures & his coverage of the Auto Expo. Thanks for sharing, man!

The Toyota Kirloskar motors pavilion has a blue and white theme, in line with their emphasis on hybrid technology.

The Japanese automaker has showcased upto 13 products including a few niche ones like the Corolla Altis Ethanol, Mirai and the Toyota Prius too.

Here's a look at their pavilion:

Corolla Altis Flex fuel

The Toyota Corolla Altis flex fuel showcased here is sold in Brazil. The Altis flex fuel is powered by a 1.8L VVT-i DOHC flex fuel engine which churns out 102hp and a torque of 142nm. A flex fuel engine is capable of running on petrol, ethanol or a mixture of both fuels too.

Paired to this flex fuel engine is an AC asynchronous electric motor capable of producing 72hp and 162nm torque. The system used here is very similar to the Hyryder and Grand Vitara strong hybrid, which means the motor alone can power the car at low speeds.

Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2231.jpeg

The Corolla Altis flex fuel is sold in Brazil where the demand for flex fuels has increased exponentially of late. The display car is thus a LHD variant:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2232.jpeg

Though Toyota has no concrete plans to introduce the Altis flex fuel in India, the Japanese giant might have a first-mover advantage if the government further strengthens its resolve to adopt flex fuel or increase ethanol blending in the near future (Related thread (Ethanol blend in petrol to be raised to 20% in 3 years | What is the impact on existing cars?))
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2233.jpeg

Overall design seems to be more of an evolution over the 11th gen Altis which we last saw in India:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2234.jpeg

Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2235.jpeg

Drivetrain layout is very similar to the Grand Vitara & Hyryder strong hybrids, barring the fact that the internal combustion component is a flex fuel engine:

Bz4x

The Toyota BZ4X is a compact-SUV concept employing a fully electric powertrain. The BZ4X has been engineered and designed by Toyota's bZ division (beyond Zero).

Don't be fooled by the compact badge though, the BZ4X measures in at almost 4.7m, which is D-segment crossover territory. Powertrain options include both a FWD and AWD variant, with the former having a range of 405 km and the latter capable of 370 km.

Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2305.jpeg

Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2307.jpeg

Imposing front end with an aggressively contoured bumper and fender. The BZ4X even gets parking assist with automatic braking. Sensors for the same can be seen here:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2310.jpeg

Rear end is signature Toyota thanks to the tail lamps. You won't mistake the BZ4X for anything else:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2314.jpeg

6 parking sensors in total on the front & rear bumper each! Check out the funky design of this rear splitter:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2313.jpeg

The funky design theme is carried over to the interiors. Though the design is radical, the sea of grey does look boring:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2308.jpeg

Uniquely shaped steering with the usual controls for the MID, telephony, cruise control & voice commands. You can also see the uniquely placed instrument cluster here:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2317.jpeg

Centre console is dominated by a huge touchscreen along with a rotary gear selector right below. The piano black centre console with the funky detailing does help break the monotony in a sea of grey:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2318.jpeg

Both rear passengers get ventilated seats along with USB C-type charging points:

Corolla Cross H2

The Toyota Corolla Cross is sold in Thailand. The Corolla Cross comes with the option of a petrol or a petrol hybrid powerplant. What is unique about the car showcased here is the fact that it is capable of running on hydrogen.

The Corolla Cross H2 uses a 1.6L turbocharged 3-pot motor running on compressed gaseous hydrogen fed by 2 tanks. The engine comes paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox using Toyota's i-MT or intelligent manual transmission tech.

Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2202.jpeg

Hydrogen is stored in pressurised tanks below the rear seat and in the boot:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2210.jpeg

Front end is unmistakably Toyota, but doesn't look uncannily similar to its sedan and hatchback siblings as you would expect. The car on display had halogen headlamps and no fog lamps:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2203.jpeg

The Corolla cross measures in at almost 4.5m. Size-wise, the Cross is in Seltos/Creta territory. Thick black cladding running across the entire length of the car is tastefully done:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2204.jpeg

The display car came shod with 17-inch Bridgestone Alenza tyres riding on steel rims:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2205.jpeg

Rear end is plain-jane in comparision to the front. Some more detailing on the diffuser and a set of LED tail lamps could have helped:

Toyota Mirai

The Toyota Mirai was also showcased. The Mirai is a unique niche luxury car which uses hydrogen to power an electric motor. The result is a powertrain which generates 182hp and has a claimed range of an impressive 650km.

Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2214.jpeg

Hydrogen is stored in 3 high pressure tanks which is then used to charge a 1.2 kWH battery that powers a 600V AC asynchronous motor:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2218.jpeg

Bold looking front end with the headlamps and indicators bifurcated looks swell. Don't miss the front mounted camera here:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2212.jpeg

A closer look at the large headlamps. They get integrated DRLs:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2213.jpeg

The Mirai has a coupe-like derriere....
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2215.jpeg

With the rear featuring a ubiquitous light bar we are so used to seeing on modern cars:

Re: Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023

The Toyota Prius has become a household name when it comes to hybrids. This was the car which put Toyota on the hybrid roadmap globally. Toyota has sold a total of more than 3.9 million Prius' globally and the 2023 Prius was unveiled back in November, 2022.

The car on display however is a facelifted version of the 2016 Prius. The Prius employs the standard Toyota 1.8 petrol motor producing 102hp and 142nm, pairing it to an AC asynchronous motor belting out 71hp and 163nm. The combined output stands at 120hp with the claimed maximum range being an impressive 1300 km.

Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2220.jpeg

The max claimed range is 1300 km, while the maximum distance that the car can cover on EV mode alone is close to 50 km:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2229.jpeg

Just like the 2016 car, the front end is a polarising affair. The huge air dam (most of which is sealed), the aggressively swept back headlamps and the heavily contoured bumper give the Prius an intimidating stance:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2221.jpeg

The side profile is relatively conservative. The overall design philosophy of the Prius has undergone a massive change as compared to the relatively conservative lines of the first gen car:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2222.jpeg

The rear end is again a love-it or hate-it affair with the radically styled tail lamps and the huge piano black insert running between them. :
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2223.jpeg

The rear bumper is probably the largest I have ever seen for a car this size. Don't miss the plug-in hybrid & the blue Toyota logo here:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2224.jpeg

Interiors are relatively conservative in terms of design as compared to the exteriors. White accents help break the monotony here. Don't miss the small gear lever mounted on the centre console:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2227.jpeg

Seen here is the boot with a removable parcel tray to keep your luggage away from prying eyes:

Glanza

The Toyota Glanza showcased here is a visually souped up version of the standard car. There are no mechanical changes to the car.

Visual mods on the outside include red & black accents around the headlamps and the front door, carbon fibre finishing being used on parts like the front grille and rear diffuser and the addition of a front splitter and side skirts (again, finished in carbon fibre and red) along with a blacked out roof. All in all, not a bad attempt in terms of aesthetics, but not worthy of being called a Glanza GR either

Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2261.jpeg

Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2273.jpeg

Visual additions also include a set of satin black MOMO Revenge alloys. They suit the car IMO. Don't miss the red brake callipers:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2262.jpeg

The already blacked out headlamps complement the overall exterior changes:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2272.jpeg

A shot of the side profile. Lowering springs would have sweetened the stance perhaps
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2393.jpeg

Black cladding around the wheel arches along with the side skirt and rear splitter give the car a beefy stance:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2263.jpeg

Changes to the rear include a blacked out applique on the boot (instead of the usual chrome), a centrally mounted exhaust tip and a new rear splitter:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2264.jpeg

The interior also follows the red and black theme. The dash and the seats get a red & white pinstripe like design running across them...
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2269.jpeg

while the tastefully done up steering gets a combination of carbon fibre & leather with a red pinstripe on top:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2266.jpeg

Closer look at the red and white treatment on the rear seats. Don't miss the detailing on the doorpads either:

Hilux off-road concept

The Hilux off-road concept showcased here is a locally made contraption for display purposes. Although most of the visual modifications on the car are functional, the mechanicals such as the steering & suspension components are non-functional.

Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2245.jpeg

Front is dominated by an off-road specific bumper, further complemented by a light bar and a pair of LED auxilliary lights:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2247.jpeg

The lower half of the bumper gets a purpose-built tow hook. Don't miss the bash plate below
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2248.jpeg

37 inch mud terrain tyres look super cool, however there's no way they are going to be clear of that wheel arch while turning. The max size a stock Hilux can take is 33 inches:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2246.jpeg

You can spot the modified ORVMs here. They drastically increase field of vision while towing:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2251.jpeg

Rear bumper again gets the off-road treatment. Don't miss the tow hitch:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2252.jpeg

Anshuman says this display car was using a Thai lift kit. None of the steering & suspension components are functional:

Toyota Innova Hycross GX

The Toyota Innova Hycross GX variant was also showcased at the Auto Expo 2023. The Hycross GX variant is available in 7 & 8 seater configurations, but only gets a single powertain option which is the 2.0L NA petrol paired to the 7-speed CVT gearbox.

Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2340.jpeg

No tri-eye LED headlamps with the auto high beam feature here. The Hycross GX makes do with an LED reflector type setup and halogen indicators:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2339.jpeg

The GX gets 16 inch alloys shod with 205/65 tyres. Although they don't fill up the wheel arches as well as the 18s do, they are a much more practical choice on Indian roads (read: taller sidewall & lesser tyre replacement costs):
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2325.jpeg

Shockingly, the GX still misses out on a rear defogger! Imagine a 20L car that gets wireless charging and an EPB, but no rear defogger:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2342.jpeg

Misses out on the chrome running between the tail lamps (godsend for us enthusiasts):
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2324.jpeg

The interior of the GX is where a majority of the differences lie as compared to higher trims. The dashboard and all surrounding areas now use hard plastics:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2326.jpeg

The steering also loses the leather wrap and controls for the MID. Also note the blanks on the right hand side of the steering where buttons for functions like the powered liftgate and parking sensors would have been:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2334.jpeg

The instrument cluster reverts to the twin pod layout with an MID in between. Thankfully, unlike the Crysta GX, the MID is a full fledged LCD unit. However, some functions still need to be accessed using the lousy stalk to the right:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2328.jpeg

No climate control here. The GX makes do with manual air-con. The controls could have been made to look more pleasing aesthetically:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2335.jpeg

The passenger side cavity gets a wireless charging pad....
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2347.jpeg

and a 12V charging socket right next to it. Don't miss the silver insert above:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2337.jpeg

Seats come draped in cloth. The driver's seat is 6-way manually adjustable:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2329.jpeg

Seen here is the 7-seater variant with the captain seats. Both the seats still get individual armrests and can be adjusted for recline:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2330.jpeg

A view of the dash here. The GX still retains a touchscreen as shown:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2332.jpeg

Colour adjustable footwell lighting is also part of standard equipment:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2344.jpeg

Manual slider for the rear air con along with charging ports for the rear passengers. Don't miss the driver's armrest here. Gets a storage area below too:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2331.jpeg

Plain looking doorpad could have done with some helping of silver or chrome. The area where you would rest your elbow is also hard:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2333.jpeg

The GX gets TC, hill hold and an electronic parking brake too! Don't miss the 2 USB ports below. One for charging, the other for media connectivity:
Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023-img_2336.jpeg

Seen here is the total bootspace available with the third row of seats flipped down:

Indian Lineup

Apart from some niche cars which are not on sale here in India, the Glanza already covered before and a handful of concepts, Toyota also showcased its Indian lineup at the expo.

Toyota Fortuner

The flagship of the Toyota lineup in India. The Fortuner brand commands an unprecedented amount of respect in India, so much so that Toyota manages to move up to 2-3K units of the Fortuner month-on-month. Not a small number for a car that has breached the 50L OTR mark!

Toyota Camry

The Camry remains a niche player in its segment which is chiefly dominated by the likes of the Skoda Superb and is now a segment chiefly belonging to SUVs in terms of pure numbers.

However, there's no denying that the Camry makes for a fuss-free luxury sedan for a chauffeur driven owner and no other car in the same segment comes close to it in this regard.

Toyota Vellfire

Launched at 4x the price of an Innova Crysta, the Vellfire seemed to be a very good excuse for Toyota as a branding exercise. However, almost 2 years after launch, it's safe to say the Vellfire has created a niche for itself and found favour among the chauffeur driven.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder

Launched in late 2022, the Toyota Hyryder has turned out to be a runaway success. With a host of powertrain options including a proper hybrid powertrain, Toyota's hassle-free after sales and pitched at a segment that continues to rake in excellent numbers, the Hyryder and it's Maruti sibling have both turned out to be blockbuster hits in the 20L compact-SUV segment.

Re: Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023

As usual Toyota is always The Good, The Bad and the Ugly

The Good

Toyota BZ4X, LF-30, LF-Z, Land Cruiser, Corolla Altis, Camry, Fortuner, Vellfire, Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Great place to to showcase their current lineup and well as future plans. Nothing much to go on.

The Bad

Toyota Corolla Cross, Mirai, Prius, Glanza. So much more could have done with these models. Corolla Cross and Mirai seemed half assed attempt in presenting Hydrogen tech. Prius showcased here is an old model with and when compared with the new one stick out more. Finally Glanza, Toyota had the chance to showcase the 1.5 Glanza here so its a big missed chance.

The Ugly

Toyota Hilux and Innova Hycross. Seriously what was going though the executives mind when presenting these vehicles. The Hilux looks like it went to a local auto shop with a big fat wallet, saying that I have to be in Auto Expo 2023 in morning just attach everything that you can. There is no design sense or aesthetics in that monstrosity.

And Innova Hycross. Seriously Toyota when people showcase their cars they tend to bring their top of the line cars, not a mid trim level. The Innova Hycross cutout was in a higher trim level than the showcar. Did you guys forgot about it and just got a Hycross from the parking lot?

And on topic of great hydrogen concepts I loved the IMV 0 from Toyota, Seriously why couldnt you guys showcase that truck? Simple yet Futuristic, a mix of past and future. Show that Hydrogen is not for rich guys only, a everyday mans truck.

Re: Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023

Disappointed that Toyota chose to bring the old Prius here instead of the latest one that was unveiled some time back. The 5th Gen is a beautiful looking car, compared to this weird looking car.

Re: Toyota @ Auto Expo 2023

Almost like in the guise of technology demonstration, they are showcasing us the models we are missing. And why would they even show the previous gen Prius Prime?

The Hycross G variant looks decent, but why are they omitting the rear defogger? I don't mind even if a car doesn't have ACC, and would be glad to eve nuse ancient sliding controls. But even for me, the controls for the manual AC look like something plucked from a generic commercial vehicle parts bin. Can't exactly put a finger to what is wrong.

And where is the GR Corolla!!! Even if it is just a display queen. Something left for second day?
