You are 100 percent correct.

The Jimny is the quintessential WW2 jeep of the modern era.
It is a small solid axle 4X4 with a simple engine and transmission (for modern times). That's it & that's all.

The only things that make it modern when compared to the Willys might be the A/C & P/S. But those too are inevitable necessities in this day and age, similar to how a 3 speed gearbox was in those times.

How can Maruti categorise this as a premium vehicle? Its either similar to, or even less of a premium offering than a WagonR and nowhere in/near the league of the Baleno.

I am not too sure about modern car prices, but I believe that for a little over the Alpha variants' expected cost, one can get terrain select, sunroofs, paddle shifters, much much better interiors & seating and the like. I do understand that creature comforts are not what this vehicle is about. I like it for the simplicity and straight forwardness it embodies. Its just that I was thinking about the options most prospecting buyers can have for a little more cash.

Another matter is that there are not many significant changes/additions from the previous gen. Jimny (except maybe the BLD).

This might be one of the last simple and robust 4wd's available in the mass market today. But that doesn't make it premium .

Re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

Suzuki Eeco base variant is priced at ZAR 19,900 in South Africa which is INR 8.56lac

Suzuki Jimny base variant is priced at ZAR 397,900 converted to INR 17lac.

So can we assume Jimny will be double the price of Eeco in India, that is 5.24 x 2 = 11lac?

In Japan swift starts @1388000 yen & Jimny @1863400. So Swift zxi in india costs 7.58 lks ex showroom, hence Jimny zeta should cost 10.1 Lks

Jimny sierra is 2 Door :-) hence add 1-1.5 Lakhs extra for 5 Door version with that logic too

Re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

Looking at the discussion on price and its premium-ness above, would one drive this in place of a Nexa hatchback in the city ?

For me, I would buy this without thinking since we have multiple cars including hatchback at home and I can use this as daily driver plus when I visit my village and drive around there. Provided the price is same as hatchback.

Its a simple car that can go to hard places and come back. I think Suzuki has been able to keep it simple and get so much in return in terms of off-road ability.

I was only pointing to the top AT variant and was also considering the additional taxes in Kerala. I also wish pricing will be good so that I don't have to cancel my booking for Alpha AT which was done on Jan 16th.

I agree, with Jimny, we can't be too aggressive on freeways but not all tarred roads are freeways. From my experience with longer wheelbase solid axle SUV's on freeways I believe Jimny 5 door will behave better than the 3 door. Either way, we will get to know more about these on Jan 26th when initial reviews come out.

Re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

Having driven a colleague's two door Jimny outside India almost a decade back, I can safely say that it is a solid off - road performer, even given it's puny size and engine. The ride quality was on stiffer side but the handling was perfect.

My assessment is that this would be suitable for urban people as a second car, who don't want a Thar sized vehicle. This would also be a good first vehicle for those living in mountain towns, as it is easy to navigate in narrow and steep roads. So this car has a niche use case and Maruti may price it at a bit premium to differentiate it from similarly sized city car like WagonR.

Re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

Seeing all the discussion on predicted Jimny pricing, I'm getting more and more happier now because i've a 90% Jimny at 30% of it's price. I'm going to hold her even more tight. Here you go

What kind of amateur-hour nonsense is this? Do they think they're testing a Baja-spec dune basher? This is the type of "reviewing" that would get a publication uninvited to future launches.

You'd be surprised to know Nexa has shared it as a post on their Instagram handle.

Of course they did . I wonder how the Suzuki engineers feel about this.

I can almost imagine how this will play out when a bunch of randos try to replicate this on IG and YT for views, only to destroy their suspensions/undercarriage bits. Then they'll make more clickbait "content" blaming Suzuki for faulty construction. All this is to say that our so-called professional auto journalists need to live up to that billing, even if the corporate social media handlers act cluelessly.
