Would a 3-door off-roader make more sense than a 5-door version?

Looking at the interiors, I hope that the base model comes below 8 lakhs ex-showroom, that will be the only play that the car will have.

It's a poor man's Jeep. Wait, that would be Thar.

Okay in that case this will be a poor man's Thar.

Nexa website seems to be down. Application loading for ages and the website gave me a service unavailable error. Impact of the Fronx and Jimny.

The emission norms issue you point out seems to have indeed been true in the UK, but it continued to sell quite well in the rest of Europe, apparently, but the numbers in Sweden have been very disappointing. Only 84 units have been sold since Jan 2020. In contrast, the 100 numbers of the Torakku slated for Sweden have been fully booked even before they even made it to Sweden!

Check my response to DicKy above. The ban indeed was applied in the UK but it continued selling in the rest of Europe. It just didn't sell well in Sweden. Likely due to how high the climate taxes are, on a vehicle with such high emission levels.

A proper box-shaped rear with a tailgate-mounted spare wheel. The reversing camera is mounted on the spare wheel:

The reversing camera is actually just above the rear number plate as shown in various videos.

re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

Really excited about the Jimny . Especially in MT form, it will be a relatively light, agile & compact 4x4 offering loads of fun. Just like the iconic Gypsy.

Unlike the Thar, the Jimny's appeal will be wider because:

- It's got 4 doors

- It's a Maruti

- It's very, very stylish.

- It will be well-priced from the start, I feel. The Thar was premium-priced at the beginning and now, the RWD Thar will put a little price pressure on Maruti

- A lot of non-enthusiasts are going to buy it, just for the style and it being a "Maruti". Even your non-English-speaking uncle living in a rural area & using a feature phone will tell you "you cannot go wrong with a Maruti". I foresee some cross-shopping between this and Maruti's usual crossovers.

Buyers be warned though. It's going to be one hell of a bumpy ride. There are going to be a lot of 2-year old Jimnys on sale on OLX. If you are buying the Jimny, consider an after-market suspension. A lot of us Thar owners sleep in peace, thanks to the AVO suspension which makes the ride compliant for us. Stock Thar is bumpy even when it's standing still

Unless Maruti tweaks the Indian Jimny and makes it more liveable? Let's see.

Honestly, I don't find the 4-speed AT to be that bad. It's smooth, reliable and doesn't annoy in normal driving. As a commuter AT, it's alright. That 1.5L NA motor anyway isn't a stonker, so it's a compatible marriage between the two.

Fun, fun, fun, fun. All / most of your points would apply to the Thar, yet it's been selling 4000 units / month...despite being higher priced and having just 2 doors.

If Maruti prices it well (I have a feeling they will), the Jimny will find its own place in the market.

Thanks to Crazy_Driver for this image! The Jimny effect @ Auto Expo on a media day (imagine on a public day):

re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

Somehow the front reminds me of the (in)famous S- Presso while the whole body that of a Qualis. Then again, as @GTO pointed out its a Maruti and people would flock to buy it when booking open and in 2 years time you can expect OLX and other platforms to be flooded with it. 12L seems a bit steep.

I wanted an automatic, and that rules out the Gurkha.

As for the 5 door Thar, the Jimny is smaller, lighter, and hence more agile. This translates to a lot of fun while off-roading. In that sense, the Jimny is like the Nilgiri Tahr (pun intended)!

  • Its not a highway car (because of the suspension set-up)
  • Its not a city car (because of the steering set-up)
  • Its not butch enough for an SUV
  • Its not premium enough to sell for its features
  • Its not a convenient car because of the poor 4 speed AT gearbox
  • Its not a performance car because of the 100 odd motor
Thank you. You summarised exactly what I was thinking. Adding one more to the list
  • Its not a a people mover car (because of lack of width)

Agree it is a hard-core off-roader. It is quite similar or worse to what first generation That offered. Even a better comparison would be to say, it is similar to Gypsy, a wee bit better. Similar to Gypsy, one may need to use speed and bounce off to make to the top of the climbs, than crawling up majestically. It is definitely a replacement for Gypsy lovers.

However, it is not an off-roader which you'd like to drive to off-road destinations. That is exactly the issue new Thar addressed.
Adding to that, it is not "JEEP", it is a pretender. The real JEEP space has been taken well and truly by the new Thar.

Btw, I am no-one to comment whether it will sell or not. If I am in the market for 5 door off-roader (which I am, partially, to complement the Jeep Compass), I'd wait for 5 door Thar.

re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

I love how the Jimny looks and it will be a worthy companion to my Bolero 4wd if I do end up getting it. Both are similar with solid axles and a proper 4wd with Low range. It will be way smoother and more refined than the Bolero and its small foot print will be a boon on small, broken mountain tracks that I frequent. It should be equally rugged too.

I also believe that the steering will be a big deal-breaker, and it isn't fixable. People who haven't driven a vehicle with a similar set up will be put off by how imprecise it is going to be.

Maruti must do a sensational job of calibrating it to stand any chance of mass appeal.

Love the functional interiors. On a different note, if Force gave Gurkha a basic functional interior like this one, the fate and sales of Gurkha would've been a totally different story.

re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

Its a great move from Maruti to launch 5 door Jimny within a short time.
Being a Thar owner, below are the positives I see in Jimny

1. 5 Door with good luggage space - This will attract many people and can gather good number of bookings as this is being launched before the launch of 5 Door Thar. It will eat the sales of existing 3 Door Thar
2. Lesser Kerb weight
3. Rigid Axle Suspension
- These would aid during offroading
4. Price - I believe Jimny will be priced along with new Thar RWD

When it comes to serious offroading, 3-door Thar may still shine due to
1. Short Wheel base
2. Multi Locking Differential
3. Higher Torque
4. Bigger Tyres

Very curios to see the offroad performance between Jimny and Thar.

Absolutely!
Jimny will be the poor man's Mithun da, who himself was a poor man's Big B.

Jimny will sell but with reduced profit margins. Mahindra has played it's cards very smartly and it will be in no hurry to revise the 'introductory' prices of the AX variant of Thar RWD. They will certainly delete features, but will keep the prices at Rs 9.99 lacs for the next 1 year at least.

Maruti had priced Brezza upwards of Rs 7.99 lacs for the base variant last year. Hence the sweet spot to price Jimny is somewhere between Rs 7.99 lacs - Rs 8.49 lacs for the base variant. Anything more than 8.99 lacs will push the buyers entirely towards the RWD Thar, which has a better engine (117 bhp vs 101 bhp; 300 Nm vs 136 Nm torque), better road presence, RWD vs FWD, and equal or lower running cost (12.5 kmpl @ Rs 90 per liter diesel vs 14 kmpl @ Rs 105/L petrol.)

Yes, compared to Thar, Jimny has 5 doors and is practical and comfortable for senior citizens. But such people will actually prefer the Brezza over Jimny in the first place.

The only variant which can hold on its own against the onslaught of both the Brezza and the Thar from either direction, is a Jimny 4x4 base variant, if they manage to launch it at Rs 9.99 lacs. But I really doubt Maruti will ever do that, unless they run out of options, as this will essentially cannibalise the sales of the top variant with 4x4.

Lastly, Maruti should have learnt a lesson or two from Tata, and named the vehicle as 'Gypsy', as the name evokes nostalgia and has a huge fan following.

My 2 cents.
