2023 BMW X7 facelift launched at Rs. 1.22 crore

BMW has launched the X7 facelift in India. The luxury SUV is available in two variants xDrive40i M Sport and xDrive40d M Sport, priced at Rs. 1.22 crore and Rs. 1.24 crore (ex-showroom), respectively.

BMW has updated the X7 for the 2023 model year. The SUV gets a minor nip and tuck but adopts the split headlamp design this time. It gets a large chrome kidney grille at the front, flanked by LED daytime running lights, with the main headlamp cluster positioned below it.

The front bumper has been redesigned as well. It now features triangular air intakes, while the rear boasts sleek wraparound LED tail lights and twin exhausts.

Inside, the 2023 BMW X7 comes with the freestanding BMW Curved Display. It consists of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system running the iDrive 8 operating system. Other features include a panoramic sunroof, 4-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, adaptive air suspension, head-up display, and ADAS.

The X7 is available with two engine options equipped with mild-hybrid tech. The 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder petrol engine produces 375 BHP @ 5,200-6,250 rpm and 520 Nm @ 1,850-5,000 rpm, while the 3.0-litre diesel unit puts out 335 BHP @ 4,400 rpm and 700 Nm @ 1,750-2,250 rpm. Both engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system.

Great to see the 40d being offered as a replacement for the 30d. The additional 40kw and 70Nm from the 40d tune may not seem much on paper but it does matter in real-world conditions.

X7 30d 0-100 was 7 seconds.

X7 LCi 40d 0-100 is now 5.9 seconds.

Mercedes GLS 400d does 0-100 in 6.3 seconds.

So X7 40d is good.

That 48V Electric Motor would be helping a little bit. Also FE has bumped up from 13.38 Kmpl to 14.31 Kmpl for 40d.

Here's a quick look at how the newly-launched BMW X7 facelift stacks up against its three-row luxury SUV rivals on the price graph.

What also matters is the way that power is delivered. Compared to Mercedes & Audi, BMW's engines & gearboxes simply feel more enthusiast-oriented. Even the diesel is more rev-happy, with distinctly sharper throttle responses and a nicer soundtrack. Mercedes' new gearbox is great, but BMW's tuning of the ZF is marvelous.

Re: 2023 BMW X7 facelift launched at Rs. 1.22 crore

Having watched the exponential way in which the prices of the German luxury offerings are rising over the years, I thought it would be interesting to compare the price premium of the luxury 7 seater SUV from BMW - which is a good sample of the price trajectory of the German marquees - and compare it with the top spec Innova. We could have also compared it with the Fortuner, which would show a similarly shaped graph.
  • In 2007, the first generation top end Innova cost 12 lakhs on road, the 7 seater X5 cost 55 lakhs
  • In 2010, Innova and BMW prices increased marginally with the Innova moving up to 14 lakhs and BMW X5 7 seater costing 65 lakhs on-road
  • By 2014, the BMW X5 had moved up to 80 lakhs, while the Innova top end had crept up to 18 lakhs
  • When the Crysta was launched in 2016, the top end of the Innova moved up to 25 lakhs, X5 stayed launched the M-Sport top end around 90 lakhs on-road
  • Fast forward to 2019, BMW launched the new X5 the top end retailing at 98 lakhs on-road and removed the 3rd row of seats. They brought in the 3 row X7, at 1.2 crore on-road. The Innova crept up to almost 30 lakhs for the top end on-road. The comparison moved to X7 from X5 as it is the only three-row full-size SUV offered by BMW.
  • Cut to 2023, the new Innova is going to retail at 35 lakhs on-road, while the X7 goes up to 1.5 crore!

You can see how the price of the German SUV is increasing disproportionately over the best alternative available in the mass market segment.

I think we will find a similar trend if we compare the price movement in other segments - when we compare the German marquee offerings versus the popular market offerings from the Germans or even the local companies.

Moral of the story - the Germans are becoming more and more difficult to afford for the initial buyer segment they were targeted at, and showing the characteristics of a luxury good, where demand is increasingly inelastic to the price. So if you want to own one of these, it is better to get in earlier and own it over a longer period of time. Fortunately, reliability of BMWs etc. has been improving, which makes it easier to hold on to these cars much longer then before.

But the suave German sales executive will say, look, since 2007, price of the top end 7 seater BMW has increased in proportion to the top end mass market 7 seater from Toyota ie. a 3X increase

12 lakh has become 35 lakh in case of Toyota, while 55 lakh has become 1.5 Cr for BMW.

Re: 2023 BMW X7 facelift launched at Rs. 1.22 crore

Totally liking the vibe with this x7. Specially with that 40d engine!
Somehow, <40L market is totally loosing diesels, 50<>1Cr range has (barely) few strong(ish) diesels (C300d, E350d, 530d, x530d, GLE 300d). Worthy of note here: few of these are touching 1Cr boundary now.

But, drive past 1Cr? Theres proper big and bulky diesels GLE 400d, GLS 400d, LR Discovery D300, Defender D300, RR Sport D350

Love it that x740d joins this club and has more firepower at (relatively) lower price than the others, barring RR Sport.

Re: 2023 BMW X7 facelift launched at Rs. 1.22 crore

From a GLE 300d Owner,
I must confess driving a German diesel is a absolute thrill, especially the torque. When it comes to driving BMW's dynamics and throttle response is magical. Another important point is, there will never be a better time to own a German car than right now ( yes it is very expensive).

The prices will keep climbing and its just a matter of time when they say " last year it was cheaper". I envy the guys who bought a G20 320d around 50 lakhs, because that segment is definitely moved to 65-80 lakhs territory. You are paying lakhs for the same engine.

There will be people who say 'Its not worth the price' which is true, but it aint getting any cheaper and 2 years from now the same car will be priced atleast 3 lakhs more or higher than current value.

No, thats not a disproportionate increase.

Going by your own numbers if anything its the Innova's price thats gone ~4x in ~15 years while the the X5/X7 only did ~3x from 50L to 1.5Cr.

So the X7 has become MORE affordable wrt to the Innova, not the other way round.

Inflation affects every rupee - including the price gap - which also grows with inflation.

From 12 Lakh to 35 is 2.9x,
From 55 Lakh to 150L is 2.7x

Jumping to X7, calling a 7 seater comparo is not something most buyers in the segment put to use. In fact X7 is only a 6 seater whereas Innova is a 7/8 seater.
Given this, I would simply stick with the X5, it's 55 Lakh to 120 which is 2.2x, a relatively reasonable increase thanks to the localisation of the product. However, thanks to it's monopolistic position, Innova is getting away withits relatively high prices, if at all.

Re: 2023 BMW X7 facelift launched at Rs. 1.22 crore

Helped a known get this one after a thorough comparison with new GLS and the Maybach GLS.

GLS feels so basic with all that synthetic leather and basic equipment. Maybach GLS is nice but for some reasons, MB has most vehicles in a very different - red interior. Sooner or later, MB will realise that many matured customers shopping in this segment need to be pampered. Bollywood and most HNI are moving to RR and similar. If not for this leather colour, my known would have paid MB asking price.

BMW also has only one interior option on X7 currently but the quality is very good (Nappa Exclusive) and at about 1/3rd the price of Maybach this was no brainer. I got him get the grill done black as chrome looks out of the place.

With X5-30D at around 1,10, X7-40D at 1,30 looks so competitive

Strange choice of leather by MB on a Maybach costing 3 Cr+ Otherwise, the car is loaded to brim but X7 is so much value and GLS so mediocre.

The car looks really lovely in all black and the blacked grill.

What favours X7 even more are the captain seats in the middle row. Everyone wouldn’t like it but I absolutely love it and it would be a no brainier to buy this rather than splurging on the Maybach GLS. Also, added bonus of the airy panoramic sunroof in X7 which extends all the way till 3rd row which the earlier GLS X166 had and now misses on.
