Toyota recalls Glanza & Urban Cruiser Hyryder over faulty airbags

Earlier this week, Maruti Suzuki recalled over 17,000 cars due to faulty airbags. Now, Toyota has followed suit by announcing a recall for the Glanza and Urban Cruiser Hyryder.

1,390 units manufactured between December 8, 2022, and January 12, 2023, have been affected by this recall. These vehicles are said to have faulty airbag controllers, which could result in the non-deployment of the airbags in the event of a crash.

Under the recall, Toyota will replace the faulty component on the affected vehicle free of cost. The carmaker will be reaching out to owners of the affected car individually. The company has also requested customers to minimize the usage of the vehicles until the part is replaced.

Now, even the most reliable brands in India are not spared. A warm welcome to Toyota and Maruti to the world of unreliability.
Even though Toyota has mastered the hybrid technology, no one has ever mastered the market of India. Probably this marks the beginning of niggles and issues in the Maruti-Toyota hybrid twins.

Brand Toyota has risked itself with Suzuki tie-up.

Now the "bullet-proof" reliability can be questioned and few will drop Toyota from their priority list irrespective of the origin of vehicle manufacturing unit.

Re: Toyota recalls Glanza & Urban Cruiser Hyryder over faulty airbags

Airbags are made by third party suppliers. Many years back, we saw Honda having a global scale recall because of faulty airbags. The airbag manufacturer Takata Corporation, another Japanese company, had to declare bankruptcy in fallout and was later acquired.
Tens of millions of cars were recalled, and it extended beyond Honda. Likes of Mercedes, BMW, GM and Audi also used Takata airbags.

Point being, it’s a manufacturing process. Problems occur. Identifying them and moving to rectify them is a good thing. They didn’t quietly brush this under the carpet, and are fixing sold cars out of their own pocket. Especially in India where there is no system of US style class action lawsuits.

Toyota and non-functional airbags are like hand and glove. At least they recognized it this time.

What matters is the proactiveness in identifying the issue and taking corrective steps in timely manner and not ignoring it. Appreciate it!

More importantly, folks at Toyota might learn a thing or two about proactively recalling all affecting vehicles. Kudos to Maruti. To me, in Indian mass market, Maruti equals reliability. Its not a surprise they rule the market.

This is the difference between the robust supply chain & QC process of Toyota and Maruti Suzuki. Toyota Cars where vendor selection , part procurement, is from the the Maruti's play book are facing this issue. I do not recollect them recalling their Innova / Fortuner in this scale / frequency

There have been recalls from Toyota for their mass market models as well. See links below for Toyota cars.

Whats matters is the manufacturer proactively recalls and fix the issue.
