Rumour: 2023 Hyundai Venue to use Creta’s 1.5L Diesel engine

With the RDE norms due to come into effect this year, automakers are making major changes to their powertrain offerings. Hyundai will continue to offer a diesel engine in its SUV line-up, albeit with a few changes.

The 1.5-litre diesel engine powering the Creta is being updated to comply with the RDE regulations. It is said that the same engine will replace the existing 99 BHP 1.5-litre diesel unit in the Venue as well. Rumours suggest that it could be paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox only.

Besides the more potent diesel engine, the Venue is also expected to gain some new features. Reports suggest that Hyundai could offer 4 airbags as standard across all variants of the 2023 Venue.

It is also said that the Venue could get an engine start/stop function thanks to the introduction of an integrated starter generator (ISG). It should help improve overall fuel efficiency, especially in stop/go traffic.

The 2023 Hyundai Venue is expected to go on sale later this year.

As per the information I got the said changes for RDE compliance is already in production and the dispatches will start soon. The RDE compliant Venue will see 4 Airbags as standard from S variant and above. Also some Standardization on other RDE friendly features such as TPMS High, ISG etc.

Also, the Diesel Venue will not come with VGT instead of WGT turbocharger and hence the difference in power.

Also, the 2023 edition Venue will launch near to the anniversary timing with some extra features.

I was under the impression that Venue uses the same 1.5L Diesel engine with different tuning after BS6. Is this the case in current version as well? Or the new version will have same power as Creta?

The 1.5 Diesel engine is same across Hyundai & Kia Diesels and being manufactured at Hyundai Facility in Chennai.
The difference is the Turbocharging type, barring Venue & Sonet all other 1.5 Diesels in their portfolio i.e. Alcazar / Creta / Verna / Seltos / Carens is a VGT whereas Venue & Sonet are WGTs.

However, in Sonet the Diesel AT on offer is paired with a VGT and MT was paired with WGT just like Venue.

Going forward only VGT will be on offer across Hyundai-Kia.

Re: Rumour: 2023 Hyundai Venue to use Creta’s 1.5L Diesel engine

When I was in the market for a new car, the facelifted Venue (which is a fantastic vehicle, no doubt) was just about to be launched. I had even pre-booked one (with Modi (Malad) & Sai Auto Hyundai (Kandivali)) as there were rumors that Hyundai was going to launch it with the phenomenal TC AT box from the Creta/Sonet/Seltos.
I had truly shortlisted the newly launched Venue but was absolutely dismayed as soon as it was launched and there was no AT Gearbox option launched with it.

Now this!
It truly seems unjust to all the folks that have purchased the 99BHP engine, not even a full financial year back. Hyundai very well knew that they had to update the Diesel powertrain due to the upcoming CAFE 2 regulations and they still didn't do it with a new (major, I might add) launch (hardly 6-7 months back).

Now that they have worked on the engine to meet the upcoming norms, they had all the chance in the world to give it the auto-box option as well, considering it's a simple lift & plonk from its already existing vehicles (and the same segment car (Sonet) from its sister concern Kia), but they didn't. Seems like a real missed opportunity and sacrifice of its own portfolio to boost sales Kia's sales, which is truly a sad thing to observe.

Re: Rumour: 2023 Hyundai Venue to use Creta’s 1.5L Diesel engine

It seems that VGT will become a standard with the 1.5 CRDi. So the news/rumours of the i20 being discontinued makes sense now. While they can easily plonk the VGT 1.5 in the i20, I guess the price increment may make it unviable. If I remember correctly, the i20 diesel accounts for just about 8-10% of its sales and with a price hike, the percentage may go down even further.

At a personal level, being a torque head, I really hope that Hyundai continues to offer the 1.5 diesel in the i20 as well.
