Off topic - DVD that came with this issue is worth watching. The Veyron doing 277mph is just awesome."

277? I thought the Veyron could go only to 250.

Oops sorry, that was a typo. It was 227 mph and not 277mph.

Mahindra Axe

I was sceptical of how good the Axe might be. Just thought that it is just another vehicle with some great muscular styling but no mechanicals to go along with it.

But I saw the Axe in action today on Aaj Tak (I guess 'Chakke Pe Chakka' is the name of the show). Should say that I am mighty impressed. It seemed practically unstoppable on any terrain. Easily crossed boulders of almost 1.5 feet. Waded through water almost like a boat!! Kudos to Mahindra to have put out such a good vehicle.

I think there is a thread on the Axe somewhere as it was discussed last year.

More of an Israeli design than a Mahindra product. So kudos to the IDF.

I think it is good that they are getting the best parts from across the world.

Too much money is wasted in India on thrid rate products which are far from being the best in the world. Look at the Arjun tank, it would have been cheaper to have bought a proven tank than designing something which cost so much and is still unproven. A few years ago they tested it in Rajasthan and the poor soldiers told to drive it were literally frying as the temperature inside was that high. The idiots at the design centre forgot about cooling provision.

A price of 12lakh+ was banded about for the civillian version. This would not use the more expensive foreign parts but usual Mahindra parts.

You mean to say it's an Israeli design?

Wow! I thought Mahindra designed it on their own with some help from other consultants.

Something similar is being done by M&M. They have a new vehicle called Marksman. Saw it on TV the first time today. The commentator said that it was based on the Bolero platform with some 105 BHP CRDE engine. However it looked a lot bigger to me.

When you are engaged in developing products for the defense of your nation it is wise to use home grown products wherever possible. If you are faced with a situation where you have to fight someone and foreign suppliers do not sanction your cause and cut off your supplies, you are in an impossible situation. Wars are won largely by logistics and mobility. We do not want outside suppliers interfering with this.
