the baleno does not take 12 sec to reach 100
Its 10.xx sec ......seen it in 2-3 mags...overdrive ....autocarindia
and the fuel effciency is better than the standard 1.5 honda cityold model.
the baleno returns 11 in the city ...while honda 10..
although the vtec returns 12 kmpl

true Baleno takes no more than 10-11.xx secs to get to the third figure!
For all practical purposes its as fast as the City 1.5 and even Vtec.
Just that its tyres don't do justice to it.

Even with better rubber, the Baleno struggles to come close to the Hondas. In the now famous Overdrive 17 car ultimate performance test:

Honda City Vtec - 10.12 seconds
Maruti Baleno - 12.77 seconds (Thats with upgraded rubber assisting in a better launch!!)

Link to Overdrive test results

A 2.6 second difference is almost 25% of the total time.

In fact, if you talk ONLY of 0 - 100 times...its the Esteem MPFi from the maruti stable that you should be talking about and not the Baleno...it enjoys a marginally better power-to-weight ratio too. The Esteem MPFi is a full .5 seconds quicker to the 100 than the Baleno.

its not only te power to weight ratio.....its also how fast yr engine revs..
thts the only reason the camry is faster than the accord ...despite te same power@same rpm
and nearly same curb weight
the baleno's 16 value plant is able to rev itself vvv fast ..
Also hats off to baleno.....city average 11 kmpl......and lots of power.....
price on road 6.10 thane incl registration and ins.....for the fully loaded ps/pw/cl/ LXI model
as for the air con ....even the merc is shying in the corner ....

sorry to say GTO ....but i think no one will agree to these figures....

ford Ikon 1.6 SXi 0-100 14.15 secs...its false......and so are the other results...check any other test results in other magazines..

I have myself timed friends ikon 1.6 Zxi stock engine in around 13.10 secs.to the 0-100 and i m not a better driver than the ppl who test drive these cars

Also the Fiat Siena 1.6 is there ..and Palio 1.6 is absent...
I dont believe these any of the figures for 0-100 ...no offence GTO..

Also i m hundred percent sure that the camry 2.4 was faster than the old accord 2.3 ////// why is camry missing?

the OCtavia 2.0 petrol is no way faster than the Sonata......
check the figures.....is the octavia so fast.....i mean almost as fast as the Baleno....no way.

what do fellow team-bhpianss have to say?

Well, I do agree that the 12.77 Baleno time seems way off the capability. Autocar tested it for 11.13 so I guess thats more accurate.

I think that the reason the Camry and Palio 1.6 arent there in the test is the test was conducted way before these cars were launched.

how much would a BRAND NEW baleno engine assembly cost
also the same for the esteem engine

I plan to put this in a Zen
I am not concerned abt handling
I understand that Xen is a light vehicle
I am more interested in performance

I am not very keen on TC's

what would be approx cost for this, after all the reqd mods like engine ,, suspension , etc???

Which is the best place in bombay to get this done???

Its easy for the E-Zens (Esteem engined zens in TBHP language) to source their esteem engine since a load of Esteems went in for dieselisation. Second many total loss accidents where the body was finished but the engine was untouched. Third, Chor Bazaar where Esteem engines from stripped down stolen cars would be sold.

I doubt Maruti sells only the Baleno engine. And it will be difficult to source unless you get lucky at a chor bazaar or the like.

Either ways, a 1.5 liter engine in a car that was originally designed for a 600 cc powerplant does not sound wise. Plonk an esteem engine, modd it up a little and you will have more power than you'd want.

Expect to pay between 20000 - 40000 for an Esteem engine.

can some1 please tell me the cost of putting a BRAND NEW( yes a BRAND NEW) esteem MPI engine in the Zen .

The old Zen engine will not be sold though , it may be shifted to some other car.

I details I want is the money involved in the following areas:

1. cost of BRAND NEW esteem engine :
2. cost of changes in the Gear( only if required) :
3. cost of changes in Exhaust (only if required) :
4. any plug , valve changes , etc:
5. Any suspension changes reqd :
6. Any other mechanical changes required :
7. Any changes under the hood :

Definately a good set of rubber on some handsome alloys will be put.

and to end this list , which is the best place in bombay to get this done:???

Dipen,

If you are dead serious...and I mean really really serious, I can give you the contact details of a close friend of mine who specialises in these modifications. Hes an ex-rallyist and also builds his own racing cars as a hobby.

1. cost of BRAND NEW esteem engine : approx 1.5 lakh (non mpfi, availability no idea) mpfi will cost 2.5 with ecu n wiring, will be diff to install
2. cost of changes in the Gear( only if required) : not really required
3. cost of changes in Exhaust (only if required) :zen exhaust will fit maybe put free flow
4. any plug , valve changes , etc: new engine shud cover this
5. Any suspension changes reqd :add a stiffer spring will help in handling also, 5 k local
6. Any other mechanical changes required : mounting points need to be changed..
7. Any changes under the hood : same as above

my advice is get a second hand engine n mod it, up the comp put high lift cam, headers n free flow, can keep cost within 1 lakh

I agree with Jaggu. Go for a simple and cheap second-hand carb engine. Mod it up.

Jaggu, have you installed a 1.3 in a Zen before?
