"Remember the standard Baleno has a tall first gear peaking out at 110kmph and the shorter ratios will make it the fastest accelerating 1.5-litre car around".

Coz its now 2 lacs cheaper than it was 4 years back. Though its great for new car buyers, I pity the ones who bought the car in the year 2000.

As for the gearing, I have never understood Overdrives explanations. For e.g. they mentioned that the Esteem MPFi is geared to do a 270km/h or something. I honestly didnt know what to make of it.

The Baleno still looks bland, but after the recent price cut, it has become a great VFM package. It's performance is good and with the addition of sensible tyres, it can behave itself. MUL's service is pretty good too.

yup in some mag.. they say its the same diffrentails and the weakest link and have a tendency to break.. the reason why MRF withdrew it from indian rally scene..

Ya the baleno has a tall second gear. Thats why it was supposed have good 0-100 because it involves only one shift. Now the baleno had other problems like the lower arm getting bend always and could not take the rough at the rally. But it was certainly with pace with the VTECs surprising but reliablility was VTEC forte!

Trust me, going by the new Zen..You would rather drive the Baleno as it looks rather than have MUL's style gurus put new lights on the front and rear.

Hey GTO,

I havent seen where you got that figure from, but my guess is that they mean that - IF you could go all the way till red line in 5th gear (which isnt possible) in the MPFI Esteem it would be doing 270km/h due to the long gearing, and the 5th gear being overdrive.

ps - and 110kmph in 1st gear...i dont think so!!

First of all, no car or bike, sold here can cross 100kmph in first gear. The Baleno surely needs to shift atleast once before it crosses the 3 digit mark.

And about using shorter gears in the Baleno, it really wont make it the fastest 1.5/1.6 ltr car in India. i'll tell you why. As it is the Baleno takes 12 odd secs to hit 100kmph. Now if you make the gears shorter, it'll need to shift twice before hitting 100. So you're actually losing another .3 to .4 of a sec there.

Maybe it'll manage early 11 secs or late 10 secs but surely not the 9.92 set by the Vtec. Using shorter gears will also affect the top speed of the car.

The only possible way the Baleno can beat the Vtec is if you tune the engine to produce more power and/or if the car is made lighter.

Regards...
