Toyota working on a longer Corolla Cross for India

The larger Corolla Cross would provide SUV buyers an appealing option with three rows of seats and strong hybrid tech.

Quote:
in the process of evaluating a larger SUV based on the Corolla Cross to take on the likes of the Hyundai Alcazar and probably the Hyundai Tucson and Jeep Meridian, as well as attract the Hyundai Creta buyers looking for an upgrade
Quote:
The platform, of course, is Toyota’s middle-of-the-road TNGA-C (or GA-C). Toyota can’t use the Hycross’s wheelbase; it’s clearly too long, at 2,850mm, and too much of a stretch from that of the Corolla Cross, at 2,640mm. However, there clearly is plenty of room for expansion. Expect an increase of around 150mm in the wheelbase, similar to the difference between, say, the Creta and Alcazar. This should give Toyota enough to add a third row and an extra pair of seats. Toyota currently has no three-row SUV of this size.
Quote:
For added flexibility, Toyota is likely to use seats that fold flat into the floor, just as on the Hycross, and the lengthened Corolla Cross is also likely to have an electrically operated tailgate. The new SUV, of course, will need longer rear doors to allow easy access to the third row. Along with the new rear doors, there are also likely to be changes made to the ‘C’ and ‘D’ pillars of the SUV. An ‘open’ layout for the rear, with plenty of glass and a slimmer ‘D’ pillar, should help visibility on the third row.
Quote:
The TNGA-C platform will even allow Toyota to choose either a more affordable torsion beam suspension or an all-independent multi-link one; low-friction dampers add to comfort levels.
Quote:
Expect the 2.0-litre M20A-FKS petrol, and especially the 2.0-litre M20A-FXS strong hybrid with 184hp and a healthy 206Nm of electric boost. The strong hybrid system, in fact, is what should give this SUV an efficiency advantage over its rivals, diesels included. Diesel fans, however, are likely to still miss the punchy midrange a modern direct injection turbo petrol delivers.
Quote:
Toyota could also choose to differentiate the SUV with a new nose and new ‘soft parts’, including a plastic bumper, grille and headlights. There are already many permutations and combinations for this SUV and Toyota could choose to go with the Japan-only or JDM (Japan Domestic Market) version of the Corolla Cross known as the Z.

I believe this is the car which was being talked about to be shared with Maruti.

7 seater grand vitara may not be in the works.

Re: Toyota working on a longer Corolla Cross for India

That was an unexpected move.

It was only logical that when they stopped selling the Corolla in India citing low demand for sedan, to introduce the global high riding alternative- the Corolla Cross.
But amidst the Hyryder, Hycross and CBU RAV4, didn't think the Corolla Cross would have made the cut, that too in a market specific LWB form.

Never was a fan of the Corolla Cross. It is a prime example of a generic crossover piggybacking on a legacy brand and my pet peeve is the interiors with less than optimal storage spaces. Would have been great if the mimicked the Rav4 interior design in the Corolla Cross.

Do hope that they make it a mini Highlander in design philosophy and also give it an independent rear suspension.

This will be anyday preferable than a stretched Grand Vitara/ Hyryder for the 23+ lakh market.

Re: Rumour: Toyota working on a longer Corolla Cross for India

This echoes rumours from Indonesia - where the FWD Innova is also produced. A crossover (codenamed IMX-2) will be released in 2024 with Innova's TNGA-C platforms and engines, most likely a three-row crossover.

Quote:
Fortuner Production Will Be Cut, Toyota Indonesia Will Focus On This Product

The next generation, or to be precise, the Generation III Toyota Fortuner is said to be coming in the near future. Later, it is rumored that this SUV will remain loyal to using ladder frame construction, aka the dated chassis, in this next generation. The Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA)-F, which is also used by the Land Cruiser 300, Tundra or Sequoia, is a construction that will become a teacher in the next gen Fortuner.

At this time the Fortuner is one of Toyota's production menus made in Indonesia. However, based on the information we received, the chassis SUV at this date is planned to no longer be made in Indonesia.

"The production will still exist, but it will be carried out in Thailand," said an OtoDriver source some time ago. "But don't worry, production in Indonesia will be replaced by new SUV products which will likely be available in 2024," he continued.

"This new product will use the same scheme as that of the Innova Zenix. It uses a monocoque structure, based on front drive and there may be a hybrid version," he continued.

The figure who declined to be named said that Indonesia would be used as the production base for this monocoque SUV, alongside Zenix. Meanwhile, Thailand will focus on one of them as a production center for ladder-based vehicles.

Regarding when, it is estimated that it will occur in 2024.

Revealing the IMX -2, a potential replacement for the Toyota Fortuner in Indonesia

Some time ago we announced that the Toyota Fortuner would be removed from the Toyota production list in Indonesia. Later this ladder frame SUV will still exist and its production will be focused on Thailand. So it can be interpreted that this famous product still exists, only the status is CBU import from Thailand. "It is estimated that this condition will occur in June 2025," said a trusted OtoDriver source.

The empty line left by Fortuner in Indonesia will soon be filled with the presence of a new car that is strongly suspected to be a crossover. "So far the replacement for the Fortuner production is referred to as IMX-2. It stands for International Innovation Multipurpose X-over," he added.

"More or less, there will be a lot in common with the Kijang Innova Zenix, which used to bear the name IMX-1," continued the figure who declined to be named.

Not yet known clearly about the specifications that will be used. Strong suspicion that it will use the TNGA-C platform like Zenix. Likewise with the engine used. Furthermore, it is very possible that there will be a hybrid option in this model.

What will it look like? There is no clear information about it yet. But we suspect this model will carry a design language that is similar to the Zenix. It is possible that its form will be like the Toyota Highlander, a medium-sized crossover that has many similarities with the Innova Zenix.

Regarding when it will be realized, it is unlikely that it will be far from Fortuner's departure, namely in June 2025.

We wait for the development.

Indonesia Will Become a Production Center for Monocoque SUVs

We received information that in the future manufacturers of passenger cars with ladder chassis will move their production lines outside Indonesia. Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport left and will focus on production in Thailand. Instead, both Three Ovals and Three Diamonds will have a new product in the form of a monocoque Crossover SUV, where Indonesia will be the production center.

"It is possible that this step was taken because it would be more efficient to focus on products in Thailand, while for Indonesia it will become another production center," said a trusted source for Otodriver when contacted some time ago.

“Replacing the Fortuner will have the same story as replacing the Innova. The IMX-2 project will produce a medium to large crossover SUV and can be said to be a car with front-wheel drive," he said.

If you refer to the IMX-1 that produced the Innova Zenix, it is possible that the IMX-2 will use the same platform, namely TNGA-C. It is likely that it will be a crossover SUV with a capacity of 7 passengers.

Re: Toyota working on a longer Corolla Cross for India

I don't understand why Toyota is only interested to launch 7 seaters (which eventually become only people movers) in India? We as enthusiasts want more from the T than just reliability.

Re: Toyota working on a longer Corolla Cross for India

Why can they not bring some cool cars to India? To be brutally honest, I am sick and tired of seeing SUV's that aren't SUV's but jumped up and elongated hatchbacks. These things are just vans with high ground clearance

Re: Toyota working on a longer Corolla Cross for India

This is strange, they have Fortuner, Crysta & Hycross in the 7 seat segment. They should have launched regular Corolla Cross in the 15-25L segment instead of Hyryder.

Toyota has a great reputation in India in 15L+ segment and give the pace of the C2 segment growth it would have been a great move to launch Corolla Cross competing with Creta / Harrier. Toyota's trust & reliability along with a fresh product in the segment would have done wonders.

Only possible thesis for this move is to capture segment for XUV700 / Hector+ / Safari as the Innova (Crysta / Hycross) MUV image. and for that they need to come of with a much better design than what Autocar is showing in rendered image. Corolla Cross is a great looker, how its 7 seat version look will decide the fate of this launch.

Toyota's target market is anything but enthusiasts at the moment. They made their stand pretty clear when they started selling Suzukis with the T badge. They seem to be looking for an increase in market share and unfortunately enthusiasts are a very small fraction of it. So, the easy option for Toyota is to provide what the mass market demands.

7-seaters priced in the 15-25 lakh range are selling decent numbers these days. With Innova moving up the price range, Toyota had to bring something to not lose their share of the market - and this seems to be their answer.

Nissan has an impressive global portfolio and yet it's Japanese siblings keep outshining it with new launches. The T badge should be enough to have a 6 month waiting when this launches.

Re: Toyota working on a longer Corolla Cross for India

I wholeheartedly welcome the decision to bring this 7 seater Corolla Cross to India.

The market is still learning that in the 15-20 Lakh 5-seater SUV segment you can launch however good a car you want, what is going to sell is the Hyundai Creta and its sibling the Kia Seltos, period. So many models are here Kushaq, Taigun, HyRyder, Grand Vitara, Astor, etc the Creta is holding on to its throne like no one’s business even after the other SUVs may be/are better than it! The Creta has become a household name and brand name in itself, like the Honda City was before the SUV onslaught began.

Toyota’s expertise is the 7 seater market in India. Other companies have come and gone, products have come and gone, look at the Crysta and Fortuner! Absolutely unfazed by the competition, selling 3700 Fortuners in a month when people continue to bash it left, right and centre for anything and everything, this is the brand value they command. Toyota India is going cash in on it with the 7 seater Corolla Cross.

Something like the Hyundai Alcazar isn’t doing as well as Hyundai India would’ve wanted in the market, Toyota will be looking to take the Alcazar’s pie.

I believe Toyota India is timing the launch in such a way that by the time the re-launched Innova Crysta is phased out, the 7 seater Corolla Cross will be taking its place in Toyota’s Indian line up, price may also be similar to the Crysta.

Re: Toyota working on a longer Corolla Cross for India

Is Corolla cross going to be launched for India in this year as 7 or 8 seater? Toyota can double down on the price tag of 18-22L potential buyer of 7/8 seater.

Re: Toyota working on a longer Corolla Cross for India

They should launch the 5 seater version as well, but even the claimed mpg of Corolla Cross hybrid is 15 kmpl overseas, not sure how this will fly in our market.

Toyota might detune the engine to provide the same mpg as Innova hycross or launch Corolla Cross with the same setup of Innova Hycross .

Another major concern is the rear bench, the international Corolla Cross has a very small rear bench, smaller than Seltos. This will also not make sense.

My guess is it will be a different vehicle on the same platform and not Corolla Cross.
