Re: What is your car's monthly cost of ownership?

Below includes all costs (fuel, insurance, maintenance, cleaning, depreciation).

Xcent Petrol AT (Torque Converter) : 11500 per month in 8 years. This includes fuel cost for 7K km per year. Lifetime fuel efficiency is 12 kmpl.

Polo GT TSI : 15000 per month in 7 years. This includes fuel cost for 8K km per year. Lifetime fuel efficiency is 13.5 kmpl.

I'm assuming Polo TSI has residual value 3.5L and Xcent has residual value 2.5L today.

Both cars are in good condition, but monthly cost will not come down further in next 1-2 years as depreciation and increased maintenance now are near the calculated levels.

I plan to hold on to them till ~10 year mark.

Interesting thread.

For Ecosport S TDCI-

Total expected usage tenure= 10 years

Cost of car: Rs. 9,65,000
Cumulative loan interest: Rs 0
Average service charge per year: Rs. 6,000
Repainting & touch-up: Rs. 14,000
Tire change= Rs. 24,000
Battery change= Rs. 4,000

Resale after 10 years= Rs. 4,50,000

Total cost of ownership (TCO)
= 9,65,000+(6000*10)+14000+24000+4000= Rs. 1067000

Net cost of ownership (NCO)= TCO- Resale=10,55,000-4,50,000= Rs. 6,05,000

Monthly cost of ownership = NCO/(10*12)= 6,05,000/120=Rs. 5041.66

For Sonet iMT HTX-

Total expected usage tenure= 10 years

Cost of car: Rs. 11,05,000
Cumulative loan interest: Rs 0
Average service charge per year: Rs. 6,000
Repainting & touch-up: Rs. 14,000
Tire change= Rs. 24,000
Battery change= Rs. 4,000

Resale after 10 years= Rs. 4,00,000

Total cost of ownership (TCO)= 11,05,000+(6000*10)+14000+24000+4000= Rs. 1207000

Net cost of ownership (NCO)= TCO- Resale=12,07,000-4,00,000= Rs. 8,07,000

Monthly cost of ownership = NCO/(10*12)= 8,07,000/120=Rs. 6725

Re: What is your car's monthly cost of ownership?

Mine is a somewhat unique case to have travelled from one extreme end to another.

3 months ago (>₹ 30,000 per month)- I had a Honda Accord 2.4 AT as a beater car (driver used to take around kids and family in that). On an average, the fuel alone used to cost more than ₹ 32,000 per month.

Now (< ₹ 5,000 per month) - One fine day, decided to replace Accord with Tiago EV. Lo & behold, my fuel cost crashed to ₹ 4,000 per month (with more travel).

It's kind of tough to not like EVs. Fast, sophisticated transmission & low running cost - could not have asked for a better city car.

Hello Sir,
Very much pleased with the detailed explanation. By any chance could you let me know which app you're using to log all the details of different cars.

Mod Note : Please quote ONLY the relevant bits of a post. Quoting a full, long post inconveniences our mobile readers.

Thanks!

Re: What is your car's monthly cost of ownership?

I would have loved to add all the car spends in a single app but the frequency of my usage and mods do not allow me to add the numbers.

For my Red EcoSport:
Car cost: 900,000 purchased in 2022(I’ve taken it on a loan for 5 years at 15k per month)
Fuel: 5k per month as I travel a LOT!( 4 digit figure distances on an average)
Tyres :30k
Insurance(Comprehensive): 30k
Detailing: 9k
Mods: approx 1.2-1.4 L including remap
Misc and battle scars: 20k per year
Service: 15-20k per year

The Blue EcoSport:
Purchased for 11.6L in 2018 - loan cleared 3 years ago
Insurance : has been 15k per year on an average
Fuel: 3k per month
Mods: 35k
Maintenance: 10k per year as this car is being used less

I haven’t considered resale value for both the cars as the brand is defunct in India and the current valuation for an Ecosport in the used market is close to that of a new one. No regrets with the spend or purchase though! Drive on

Re: What is your car's monthly cost of ownership?

[quote=automowheels;5548039]

Illustrating this with an example:

Total expected usage tenure= 8 years

Cost of car: Rs. 8,00,000
Cumulative loan interest: Rs. 1,50,000

/QUOTE]

To my knowledge, you need to recalculate interest cost.
You need to consider interest cost or opportunity cost on entire 8L for 8 years, even if you would not have taken loan.
You need to consider cost of capital.
Reason is that if you would have invested this 8L somewhere, you would have earned something out of it, even if there is no Loan as such.

So, considering interest of 8% for 8 years, you need to add 6.4L instead of 1.5L.

Please let me know if I'm missing anything here.

Re: What is your car's monthly cost of ownership?

This is a thought provoking thread and made me go and check the numbers for my car i.e. the Vista which is the one that I use the most.

Realized that while I have the complete service record (since I have always used the ASC for everything), I never bothered to keep track of fuel cost till I downloaded an app in March 2021.

I therefore had to extrapolate the fuel cost numbers based on fuel expenses in the last two years - the actual cost would be lower than this as fuel was cheaper earlier and also the car ran comparatively less during the pre-covid period, especially between 2015-2020 when I was in Bangalore and the car was mostly in the garage at home in Calcutta.

First the calculation for fuel expenses:

Taking the numbers from the app, in the last two years the car has run 38298 kms and consumed 2805.23 Litres of diesel at a total cost of INR 261946.23. This translates to INR 6.84 per km and an average mileage of 13.65 kmpl. (All my calculations are tankfull to tankfull.)

Extrapolating this over the total mileage run of 115095 kms we get the number of INR 787214, which can be considered as the total cost of fuel over the 9 years 11 months period.

This is how the numbers stack up excluding fuel (all costs in INR):

Purchase cost: 707891

Interest paid on partial finance of 3 years: 58692

Total maintenance cost over ownership period: 409627. This includes accident repairs, regular service and replacement of battery (thrice), tyres (twice) etc.

I also need to consider the insurance premium payout over the ownership period and this comes to: 108497

This adds up to a total ownership cost (-fuel) of INR 1284707

Dividing this by 119 months, we get a monthly cost of ownership of INR 10796

Now if we consider the average monthly cost of fuel using the extrapolated total cost of INR 787214, then this comes to INR 6615 per month

So the total monthly cost of ownership is 10796+6615 = INR 17411 at present.

I have not considered any resale value as I intend to keep the car as long as I can. Plus I doubt that the Vista will have much resale value since it is an outdated and out of production model.

However, despite not considering any resale value, just by looking at the other numbers on this thread, the VFM quotient of the car has got even stronger. (No surprises there - no wonder GTO recommends holding on to a car for longer)

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/buyin...to-longer.html (How a more expensive car can work out cheaper (if you hold onto it for longer))

Here are some charts:

The first one is at an overall level but does not include fuel costs from purchase (June 2013) till February 2021

What is your car's monthly cost of ownership?-whatsapp-image-20230517-2.46.04-pm.jpeg

The second chart is for all expenses in the last 2 years - these are actual numbers and include maintenance cost. As you can see, almost 40% of the maintenance cost has come in the last 2 years, i.e. once the car did over 1 lakh kms. Many wear and tear and old items needed to be replaced - for example tyres, battery, front suspension, timing belt, etc.

Re: What is your car's monthly cost of ownership?

I guess cost per km is more relevant as we can compare subscription based cost vs buy and use. also occasional users may find ubers and olas more useful as it comes with a benefit of driver and no hassle of parking during city outings.

Re: What is your car's monthly cost of ownership?

While in India, I did not own a car but only motorcycles (My father's cars doesn't count as mine). So my first car ownership started here in the Netherlands. I have had different types of ownership / lesseeship in the last 11 years I am here. I had owned different cars for different periods of time, but since it is a monthly TCO, I think I can dig around my administration and post some useful numbers here. Also Androdev's % approach is interesting. So I will add that here and to my notes too. Learning something new eveyday. Thanks.

I will post the following values for my past and present cars:

Depreciation : Bought - Sold (Applicable for private ownership)
Lease cost
Insurance
Road tax
Maintenance
Fuel
Benefit-in-kind (This is a fuel allowance or company lease car) from employer (Lucky me )
Benefit-in-kind tax to the taxman

TCO / month
TCO / month in %

From a noob about personal finance to learning lessons the hard way and now with a decent understanding of TCO. The benefit in kind is the contribution I get from the employer as fuel costs (in case of private cars) or a company car with fuel (for this I need to pay benefit-in-kind cost to company and a benefit-in-kind tax to the tax man)

NOTE: All costs in EUR are per month values and my average annual usage is about 35000~40000kms. Minus are reimbursements / benefits in kind from employer for mobility

Re: What is your car's monthly cost of ownership?

There are no standard formulas for ownership cost.

Legends also do consider depreciation and inflation cost as well when calculating ownership costs.

I find your thread useful for me to compare this with subscriptions versus self-ownership so I have tried to break up the OpEx between two categories, one which I need to pay and the other which is covered in a subscription model.

So my drive is XUV5OO W10 MT and the monthly ownership cost is around 33000, if I maintain it for 5 years. If I sell it after 7 years or 15 years, it would be a lot cheaper.

OMG! What is included in this service? I can see you've already calculated the costs of injury treatments.

My sister owns an EcoSport Diesel and the regular service cost is like 7ish.
