Holy Mackerel!!!

Could you please also post the details of the conditions and percentages? Like city with traffic/sparse traffic/good open roads or highways?

Whichever the conditions, though - Great milage! Congrats!

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

My second post on this thread.

Car:Fiat Linea MJD
Distance:~440 KMs
Destination:Bangalore to Nagarhole & Back
Fuel Efficiency:25.9KM/L
Speed:As the road & traffic permit, never over 90-100.
AC: 100% On.

This includes the last 12 KMs to Jungle Lodges where you DO NOT have a road and only craters of various sizes which need to be navigated.
When:27 & 28th of August 2011

Dude that's awesome FE. Do you get it consistently on long drives or its just one-off instance?

It was 90% highway without AC but with 5 people on board always.

10 % sparse traffic.

Thanks Buddy

That's excellent FE. Is it normal diesel or speed or something else? Anything else that you do differently from others?

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

@c300 & @arun_josie,[/COLOR]

I use regular/normal diesel. I try to keep the tyre pressure at 33PSI on all wheels.
On non NH roads, I do not speed, especially on the Mysore stretch (Too many people, traffic, speed breakers).
I have got without any difficulty with a total of 3 huge people on board (~280 KGs) 100% AC ~ 22 KMPL, on many occasions.
The above number seems to be very achievable consistently, why?
1. I have this habit of not filling fuel, until the car covers a minimum of 100 KMs for city driving, from the time the orange light comes on.
2. On highways i usually aim at 150 KMs at least.
So obviously this leads to a few very hairy moments when you suddenly realise that there are no fuel pumps and the needle is flat at EMPTY for a long time.
And the car goes on and on. I Obviously am running in ECO driving mode now.
So always believed the car capability to deliver a high KMPL if driven cleanly.

On this particular trip to Nagarhole, I was alone in the car, so weight was less, I was very pleased to see the average of 25.9KMPL.

My Bangalore city driving has improved with returns 16 – 17 KMPL consistently with 100% AC. City driving on a Linea, is fun, I do keep it relatively in the rev band. Never lug.
My NH driving returns 17 – 20 consistently, this usually is again with 3 people (~ 210 KG) 100% AC. Here the speeds are when traffic and road permits, usually between 130 – 160.

One observation, DO NOT, run the car at a low speed in a high gear (go by ear), Contrary to popular belief, shift down whenever the speed drops. You should get good mileage.
The car has now covered 38800 KMs.

OT - Please do not do this frequently, else you will be looking at fuel pump repacement soon. And this is expensive. In CR diesels, fuel pump needs to create a very high pressure in the rail for engine to run. In case of low fuel, the pump needs to do as much extra effort to maintain the pressure. I think you should fill when there is still around minimum of 2-3 litres of fuel left.

As for the eco mode, you can do so even with full tank. If you can drive sedately to get higher mileage, why only with the fear of very low fuel in the tank?

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Actually keeping fuel tank full has major advantages over driving with lesser fuel

1. There will be less evaporation loss. The more air in the tank, the higher the vapour build up, thus higher loss due to venting.
2. Sediments and dirt will not get into the fuel pipes & filter. It is common for the dirt to collect at the bottom of the fuel tank. This gets into the system when the levels are low.
3. It is easier on the fuel pump, especially in high pressure CRDI Diesels.
4. Lastly, you are never going to run out of fuel in emergencies. I remember the trouble people have when ever there is a strike or the nearest pump runs out of fuel. You can see them wasting a lot of time and effort finding fuel before the tank is dry.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

@amit1234singla, @Aroy,

Thank you, you are very right, i will try and ensure that i refill earlier, around the time it hits the reserve mark.
Both from a fuel pump and sediment perspective.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Absolutely agree with @Aroy! Both my car as well as bike will go for a full tank as soon as the fuel gauge reaches the half tank mark. And that has been my practice for over 25 years.
