Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Today while coming to office the amber light on my dash indicating the reserve level lit up. I went to the BP bunk near my office & asked the attendant to do a tank full. Normally if I fill when the tank if this empty the car gulps 30-31 litres of diesel (reserve capacity of the 37 litre tank is 7 litres). To my utter surprise when I looked at the meter I found that the tank had gulped 33.99 litres of diesel (Rs 1500/-) & there was still some space left for more. The car had consumed almost 3-4 extra litres of fuel. My query to the experts here, is there any chance that the meter might have been rigged? Could it be that for every litre shown on the meter it is actually dispensing 900 or 950 ml? Any hints?

Edit: I rarely fill from this bunk though diesel is cheaper here (Rs 44.13) compared to my regular bunk (Rs 45.54)

I bought a Hyundai i10 Sportz on December 10, 2011.
I call him Stuart, and well, he just turned 6 months old 4 days back.
Hes fun to drive and small enough to fit into little lanes, but there is one MASSIVE problem, mileage.
I have a log book in my cars glove box where i write down the thenkms run each day. Also i write the ODO reading when i fill petrol, along with the litres filled.
On calculating the average mileage from these records, i found out that hes juat givin 7-9km/lt in city, whereas 16-18km/lt on highways!
I am not among those ruthless and rash drivers, i love my car and i shift gears when the meter reaches 2000rpm.
Stuart has run about 7800kms and just came out from its secomd service yesterday!
Please help me as to how i can improve my fuel efficiency!

I hope you are calculating the FE with tankfull-to-tankfull method. Since you car is quite new, expect the FE to be on the lower side. I believe the first service was simply a check-up service & the engine oil change was done only now (during the second service). Do you feel that the engine has become more smooth now & the gear box has free up? Expect the FE to improve gradually now. Keep to your sedate driving style & it will definitely go up now.

in your zeal to get more out of the car and changing gear before the right speed you may actually be lugging the engine(Just a hunch). Please ensure that the RPM doesn't fall below 1600 RPM at any point in time and change gear to higher only after reaching 2200 RPM and see the difference.

This app is called 'Road Trip'. Even I got reference for this from a fellow bhpian. I'm very happy with the app and it takes 30 seconds to update details each time I refuel.

i am not surprised. in fact i get surprised when i see people quoting in city mileage of >11-12 for the i10 kappa( that too with 100% a/c )

the kappa is thirsty in the CIty and as you rightly have observed, is "disproportionately" more FE in the highways.

possibly the people who get such high FE in the city might actually be driving in low traffic/early hours of the day

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Ford Fiesta Petrol 1.6 Zxi - 2007 model

Bangalore city traffic conditions: 375-380 Kms per 45 litre tank
A FE of 8.5 :(

On the highway, it returns 500 Kms for a tank full - FE of 11.

Regards
