I too think switftdiesel figs are optimistic.

When you are doing cutoff to cutoff measurement, MID figs doesn't matter.

To me, the Ertiga figures are optimistic. No offense.

If it really delivers that much, wow, kudos to its light construction and weight, plus tuning.
I own a ertiga vdi. and I guess the dry weight is about 1200+kg. at this weight it should be heavier than the punto. So the build quality comparison doesn't work here.

My car is about 6 months old. just came back from blr-tirupati trip and have crossed 5k. Did close to 600km in this trip. And the stupid diesel station's cut off meter didn't work, when I refilled after the trip. Ended up filling upto to brim and still the FE was a tad less than 18kmpl.

The speed range was about 80-120. About 50-60kms of ghat section. 200kms of very good 4 lane. The rest was, old type dual carriage highway. With 4 adult and 2 kids onboard and a/c 100%. 34 on front tyres and 38 on rear. 195 c-drive. Onward journey was a sedate 80-100. The return was 100-120 and was accelerating hard.

I believe this FE can be pushed to 19 or may be 20. very difficult beyond that.

Thanks for putting a clear picture.

I'm not contesting anybody, but am getting curious of the tall FE claims from Ertiga and Duster owners, over their hatchback sisters, Swift and Micra respectively. Or, is there any technical parameters, like power to weight ratio, for the equal displacement engines, in supports of this better or at par FE?

I think that FE and top speed are two important criteria being checked out by car buyers in India. Unfortunately or otherwise, both these aspects are not covered under our official reviews. And yes, I don't have to be shy in saying that I'm a fan of FE and that I had to sell off one car owing to pathetic FE and low-end-torque combination. Do not wan't to repeat that mistake again and so am the look out for the best, or a better one, in the business. And it seems that those who say they don't mind much about FE too end up buying diesels ultimately!

I think I have already contributed, but once again

Maruti Swift VDi ABS (~80,000 kms now)
Tyre upsized from stock 165 to 185 profile.
Car heavier than stock with ICE, damping etc (not sure of the additional weight, ~50-100 kgs? )

1 person, ~100% A/C , 100-120 kmph = 23 kmpl consistent. (Total 580 kms trip --> 350 kms are optimal driving condition, 150 kms average roads with a fair number of gear shifts & 60 kms of downward ghat section with frequent hard braking & gear changes.)

1 person, ~100% A/C, 80-90 kmph = 25 kmpl (same roads as above)

4-5 persons, ~100% A/C, 80-100 kmph = ~20 kmpl

Last trip

3 adults, 1 kid & 1 infant, boot full of load, ~100% A/C, average to bad to worse roads = ~18 kmpl

PS: I always felt that the car should average atleast 27 kmpl in the first 350 kms of optimal conditions mentioned in the first point, which later comes down to 23 kmpl (by the end of the trip) because of non-optimal conditions.

Disclaimer: All readings tankful to tankful, speed varies in non-optimal conditions (than mentioned speeds) for obvious reasons :-) FE for 1st point verified multiple times under the same conditions.

That's some realistic talk.

Filling upto the brim rather than auto-cut off can give the most accurate FE, i guess.

You're saying auto varies each time?

Ah i didn't imply that. But for auto-cut off, we need to go to the same bunk and the same pump right?

Anyways, these days i am relying on DTE in the Ford more.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Just came back from long highway drive. Here is an update on FE

Car: Swift Diesel with 56K on ODO
Route: Ernakulam - Thrissur - Trivandrum - THrissur - Ernakulam (all through NH47)
Total Distance: 725km
A/C usage: 60%
Traffic: Light traffic for 80% of the drive. Moderate to heavy traffic for rest.
Speed: Mostly sedate driving (70-90). But ripped the car for around 100Km.
Load: Fully loaded for 300 kms. Rest of the distance it was only 2 adults and an infant
FE: 18.9 (full tank to full tank, same fuel station)

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Here's my Chevy Sail figures (probably first one here) obtained by tank full to tank full method.

Car : Chevrolet Sail UVA Petrol
Total KMs: 417
Total fuel consumed : 30 Ltrs
FE : 13.9 kmpl
100 % city driving
80 % with AC on

These are very first KMs for the car. I think the figure should improve with more mileage.

Even with same-bunk-same-dispenser, the auto-cutoff can vary. And the variance can be way off the mark too as I experienced it once. The fill-to-brim method would be the most accurate method IMO.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Drove a Tavera 2.5 isuzu for over 543 km with 6 passengers, luggage.

Onward journey: 60-80 kmph. So FE=17 kmpl.

Return journey: 80-100 kmph, sometimes 110 but it doesn't feel mentally healthy to take it above that, slight use of AC, Slowed down for some 20 km of bumpy broken tarmac.

kmpl = 12.5

Average works out to 14.75 though the entire trip. Not bad i guess.
