Hi guys!! For the purpose of correction of errors in MID calibration of different vehicles,I suggest everyone to include the efficiency by tankful method also for better comparison. Thanks.

Car - Swift LDi

I have been comparing the FE figures since the last 4 tankfulls (which happens quite fast at 1 tankful every 5th day) and after I got the DieselTronic box installed.

First tankful :

Distance covered - 627 km
Fuel filled (till Auto cut off) - 40.89 L
FE - Around 15.33 kmpl
Usage - On highways and urban roads, less to moderate traffic, speeds between 40 to 90 kmph with occasional bursts upto 120 kmph. I was excited to test the RD Box in P2 mode and hence got a bit aggressive on the pedal. AC Usage was 100 %.

Second Tankful :
Distance covered - 675 km
Fuel filled (Auto cut off) - 39.85 L
FE - Around 16.93 kmpl
Usage - Around 400 km in city traffic, paved roads, speeds between 10 to 40 kmph, P1 mode on the RD Box, sedate driving with fast bursts in the 2nd gear (10 to 40 kmph). Rest 275 km was on 2 lane highway, constant speeds of 70-80 kmph, top gear, sedate driving. 100 % AC usage.

Third tankful :
Distance covered - 771 km
Fuel filled (Auto cut off) - 40.86 L
FE - Around 18.88 kmpl
Usage - Sedate driving, cemented roads, moderate trafffic, E mode on RD Box, top gear, constant 60-70 kmph. This includes a trip to Chandigarh from Delhi, at night with almost no traffic and 80 kmph speed all through. AC used for only 250 odd kms.

Fourth tankful :
Distance covered (hold your breath) - 576 km
Fuel filled (Auto cut off) - 39.77 L
FE - Around 14.48 kmpl
Usage - Strictly inside city, P1 Mode on the RD Box, moderate traffic, driven with a light foot. This includes standing stationery for half an hour (twice) with AC on.

PS. I note down the Odometer readings and the quantity of fuel filled. I fill from the same outlet mostly but had filled in Chandigarh for the fourth tank. I note down the driving style (in a basic Memo on phone) and do not use any sophisticated tables or diagrams. I will post more in the coming days as I fill almost every 5th morning (190 km per day travel) and religiously keep noting down the numbers. I haven't noticed much improved in FE after the RD Box install, but maybe because the car needs a thorough service and a tyre change (due at 95k km mark). I ride on 205/55R16 tyres and check tyre pressures every alternate tankful.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Use an app like Fuel Log. It would be easier to track.

BTW, my Swift ZDi's average FE for 40,000 kms since 2013 is 17.51 kmpl. (Best FE after full tank fill-up - 20.43, Worst - 15.38)

RD Box used for the last 7.5 kms mostly in P1 mode. It's a mix of city and highway driving (50% mix) overall with windows always rolled up (with AC or Fan on).

Not flat highways as Chikmagalur is a famous hillstation and the I guess there should be a 1000 feet variation in altitude between these places.

Average speed of 54 kmph. Was cruising at speeds of 80 - 90 kmph most of the time. A/C on for 75% of the time except to enjoy the fresh breeze on the hills.

Average FE: 22.9 kmpl. Tank was topped up before the drive and shows half full after 565 kms. Got to love the highway abilities of these new age turbo diesels. Amazing fuel efficiency without compromising too much on performance.
Hey Crazy Driver, 22.9 Kmpl figure is taken from the display readout / manually calculated through tankful - tankful method ?

I heard display fuel efficiency figure is not accurate. I am thinking of buying a hatch and looking for fuel efficiency figures.

Even the Fiat India site says the max fuel efficiency for Punto 90HP is 20.5 only.

Diesel 1.3L Active/ Dynamic/ Emotion 21.2 kmpl+
1.3L 90-HP 20.5 kmpl+

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Update:

Swift VXi 2012

KMs done: 35K
Drive route: 80% highway, 20% city
Condition: 40% AC
Driving style: very sedate, max speed: 70KMPL
FE: 21KMPL on average.

New finding: Top up the tank with 10L (yes, I need to do it once in 4 days ) when the needle is on half way mark for maximum mileage.

Do shed some more light on this finding. Do you mean topping up with 10 L (and not full tank) everytime the needle shows half tank?

And that is a great FE number for a Petrol Swift! I would be very surprised if you are getting this after calculating from tankful method.

Yes, exactly. But it results in frequent visits to Petrol pumps

For the same conditions, I tested tankful only once, and I got below 20KMPL only.

For me, the fuel expense is just Rs 3/- per KM, just like a Diesel driven hard.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

My Polo regularly returns 16 to 17.5 Km in City and upto 23 on the Highway. During peak summer the City average drops to about 15. Just for the heck of it I added up all the fuel used till date, and it came to 2781 Lit for 47500 km run which works out to 17.0802 km/Lit.

Sorry for my poor English, I think you misunderstood it. How does this thing actually work? How does 'topping up 10L everytime the needle hits half' thing work to improve mileage?

I drive close to 6000 kms in a month and wait for the Low fuel indicator to light up before refilling to full. And I do this every 4-5 days.

The 2011+ petrol Swifts and Dzires usually give 14-15 in the city to 17-19 on highways with 100% AC. From whatever I noticed, the MID readings are usually 4-5 kmpl more than tankful ones.

I'm guessing you meant 70 KMPH and not 70 KMPL

Not sure about the science behind it; but there are talks about:

i. "Full tank fuel" means more weight for the car to lug around which results in slightly higher consumption.

ii. and "low fuel reading" means lot of empty space in tank which allows more vaporization.

So, keeping the fuel level to a medium might be helping in improving FE.

Yes, MID shows nearly 20% higher than actual FE.

The difference in FE between the MID figure and Full tank(Top-up) method normally comes between 0.5 to 1.0 only.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Thank you Arun. It looks like I will book a Punto Evo Active soon.

I just checked the maintenance between Swift and Punto and I find Punto is tad cheaper (compared both at 60K Kms).

Yes not a big difference in servicing cost between Swift and Punto. After all both comes with the same engine. Punto 90hp maintenance will be little costlier especially due to the timing chain replacement at the 60K Kms.
