Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

FE of some cars I spent some time driving last year-

Renault Kwid 1.0 MT- Best 18 kmpl, Worst 12 kmpl

Maruti Baleno RS- Best 19 kmpl, Worst 11 kmpl

Maruto Baleno DDIS- Best 24 kmpl, Worst 18 kmpl

Maruti Baleno 1.6 - Best 15 km, Worst 11 kmpl

Maruti Dzire 1.2 AMT(P) - Best 21 kmpl, Worst 17 kmpl

As you can see, out of these, the Baleno RS turned out to be surprisingly fuel efficient with a light foot. The Kwid 1.0 gets pretty thirsty, for a small car, when driven enthusiastically. The only way to extract a good FE on the mini-Duster is to drive with a very light foot and aircon turned off.

These figures have been calculated using the tank-to-tank method and rounded off to the nearest whole number. Usage of all these cars includes usage in sparse-to-medium traffic and a couple of highway trips. I understand there are a lot of variables involved here but I think these figures still go on to give a fair idea of the FEs of these cars in similar driving conditions.

Feather-light body helps probably. Here's another one

Car : 2010 Maruti Estilo
Fuel : Petrol
Odo : 30,000kms(of which 15,000kms done in last 15 months)
Method : Tankful to Tankful
City(ECity/outskirts of bangalore) : 15.5-16.5kmpl (been pretty much in that range since last 1.5 years)
Highways : 19-20kmpl
Passengers : Mostly 2.
Luggage : Minimal
Tyre pressure: 32

Highways haven't crossed 100kph as it feels like a boat post that. Usually stick to 80-85kph range where it feels OK-ish.

Spot on with your observations regarding the fuel efficiency as well as the highway behaviour of the car. Your experience closely tallies with mine. You could try the Maruti recommended 33psi in all tyres and save a bit more fuel .

Why has the car run so less?

Actually the roads I take aren't smooth, so the ride is pretty juddery if I stick to 33. Tried 31/32 and its slight better, though nothing exceptional. Have plans to upgrade to 155 section tyres as am still on stock ones(I know high time to change them). Mine is Lxi so has the 145 section tyres currently. Mileage is already pretty good and hence, I dont mind loosing 1-2 kmpl as long as I can get a better ride.

I bought it for my dad back in 2010 who used to live in a small town in Jharkhand(TATA steel township named Noamundi) where it was barely used twice a week for 10-15 kms max. Later post retirement in 2014 end he sent the car to me as he shifted to Kolkata and we had the Brio there already with my brother. Coincidentally at that time I had to leave country for a couple of years .So it had only 15k kms by the end of 2016(i.e. 6 years). Beat that

Only after I returned , I started using it regularly for office commutes since last 15 months and managed to clock 1000kms per month on average. Selling off didn't make sense while travelling as it was barely used, now am glad I kept it with me.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

My VW Polo GT TDI’s actual fuel economy;

Only City (always light foot): 14kmpl
Only highway with light foot: 23-24kmpl
Only highway with heavy foot: 18-19kmpl
Mixed inputs on highway: 20kmpl

Highest: 26.67kmpl
Lowest: 12.70kmpl

Note: These all kmpl figures are calculated by ‘tank full’ method and are not as per MID.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

My December 2016 Polo GT TSI and it's FE story of 55 Tank fills so far
What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?-untitled.jpg
We can see that the FE trend-line has gradually risen over time from ~12kmpl to ~13kmpl. This is either because I have mellowed down or the car has settled down very well.
The FE from the last two tank fills have been very astonishing for me because they are completely in city conditions.

Disclaimer: This is just from a statistic perspective because I know I shouldn't be worrying about FE when I own this car

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

I wouldn't generally post about the mileage achieved during the daily office runs but this one was quite special. For the first time I could get a mileage of 22 kmpl covering a distance of 811 kms in a single tank (till the low fuel indicator was on) in 37 litres of diesel.

This is by far the highest distance travelled in one tank fill. The speeds maintained were around 70kmph with 30% AC (only during the return trips to home).

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

It was a lazy Sunday morning and I had to attend a friend's function in Hassan - about 200km from Bangalore. Since this would be a trip with no multiple stops, I decided to find out 'What is my Actual Fuel Efficiency"

Vehicle in question here is my 09' Ford Fiesta TDCi with about 136K kms on the ODO. Headed to the nearest trusted HP outlet and did a full tank in slow dispense mode and insisted on auto-stop (no manual top-ups).

Started at around 715AM and set out with an intention to see how far I can stretch on a liter of diesel. Maintained anywhere between 70-80km/h and did a lot of coasting in neutral wherever traffic allowed me to do so safely. Since this was more of a mileage rally I did not use the AC. Traffic was moderate as it was Sunday and toll booths were rather crowded but I was greatly helped by Fastag. All lanes were manually patrolled and only ones with the tag were allowed.

Reached Hassan at 1115AM with one stop for breakfast and on the way back started at 145PM and reached home by 6PM with couple of stops. About 2 hours later, went back to the same outlet and insisted on the same dispenser to do the same rate of refueling and auto-stop.

Coming to the numbers:
Total distance - 434km
Volume of diesel - 12.43L
FE - 34.91 km/l.

Attaching a picture of the trip meter and also the DTE or Distance to Empty.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

During the last weekend we made a trip to Kaziranga National Park & back. During this trip I kept the speedometer under 100kmph for most part of the journey & the FE returned during this trip was 19.7 kmpl (The MID figure), couldn't do a tankful to tankful calculation this time. The car was loaded with 5 passengers, a boot full of luggage & AC was used throughout the whole trip. Out of the total 450km, about 240km came in good 4 lane highways & about 30km in city traffic & the rest in single lane highways.

I also made the same trip few months back with a similar passenger load & AC usage. That time I was more brutal with the accelerator pedal & I touched 110-120kmph in good sections of the road. The FE that the car returned was 17.4 kmpl (MID figure) & a tankful to tankful calculation resulted in a FE of 16.9 kmpl. Hence by being slightly easy on the accelerator, one can easily improve the FE by around 2 kmpl or more.

Here are some stats from the trip:
