Ideally you should always have 1/2 tankful of fuel. Low fuel levels lead to higher evaporation in summers.

That said, I always wait for the "reserve" (blinking in my case) before filling, as I drive very little and that too in the city. My reserve has at least 4L so it is good for 50+km. On the other hand if you are travelling a lot; or on highways; fill up when you have estimated 100km range left.

Mine is Creta 2017 Diesel Manual SX+. With 75% highway and 25% city, the average FE I am getting is around 14 kmpl.

My drives are not much spirited and well within 2000 rpm mark. I do as well feel that the FE I am getting is low. I checked with the mechanic at the Hyundai service station and he said there can't be done anything about the FE. I've heard reviews from many Creta Diesel 1.6 owners that they are getting 18+ on highways. Perhaps, we don't have that luck.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Ciaz Diesel: 35 km daily on Bangalore (non)roads laden with potholes, speed breakers, and rough patches: 20-21 km/L (AC on always to guard against dust entering cabin)
Highway runs for longer distances: North of 25 km/L (AC on most of the time, 90%)

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Yesterday I travelled from Bangalore to Jadcherla on Hyderbad highway and then 150 km of state highway. Total around 650KM. I never got more than 14-15kmpl on highways due to my driving style - Most of the times 100-110KMPH, reaching even 130-140 if roads are favourable and flooring the pedal to reach higher speeds if slowed down.
Yesterday I refused to use accelerator as much as possible. I maintained speeds mostly between 70-90kmph (75-80 in that range mostly). I did not floor the pedal if the speed drops down to 60 on the inclines and let the car gather the speed later. It added 1.5 hour to my usual travel time. Started at 7AM at home and reached by 6:45PM with around 1.5 hour break for breakfast and lunch.
I did not filled the petrol on the way. This never happened to me. I always had to fill petrol on this route. The trip distance was 48 (the distance travelled from petrol fill) when I started and now at 702. The car MDI still shows two bars in the fuel guage (i20 elite). THe fuel economy shown is 23KMPL. I suspect I would need to fill around 36 liters after another 50-60km travel, which comes to 21KMPL. I believe that is an excellent mileage for me.
Some observations:
I kept instantaneous fuel economy whole time to monitor.
1. The inclines are bad for fuel economy. Bangalore to hyd route is reasonably flat. Even then for even small incline, the fuel economy drops to 10-15 kmpl or single digits if it longer incline.
2. Flooring the pedal is always bad. The economy drops to single digits immediately.
3. Maintaining 75-80kmph was difficult. As it was not my natural style, I was leaning a bit on steering instead of relaxing.
4. There might be a way of driving at 90-100 instead of 70-80 and still get 19-20kmpl but the killer is reaching that speed (more pedal press) and maintaining it.
5. I got more milage on state highway than on highway. May be because speed is automatically down.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

On my 2011 i10, I get 9-11 kmpl in the city and between 15-17 kmpl on the highway. I cannot do much about the mileage in the city, but in highways, I ensure that gear shifts and throttling are done very smoothly and I keep the engine running between 1800-2000 rpm for the most part (I restrict my top speed to generally 80 kmph in 5th gear at just over 2000 rpm). It makes for a really sedate drive, but that's fine as I have good music playing at all times. I suppose the car also is grateful for the light right foot.
I suppose that is true of most of the older mainstream NA petrol Hyundai cars though - Meh driving experience, but gets you where you want to with little fuss.

Both my 2007 Ford Fiesta Petrol and 2020 XL6 petrol return more than 20 kmpl on highways (even gotten 24 kmpl on XL6 on empty Highway runs)

Most people tend to do what you do - keep the rpm between 1800 to 2000.

But that doesn't make much sense - it's much better to keep the rpm between 2500 to 3000 rpm - which is where NA petrol engines typically have the highest torque. The higher torque means that you need the lightest pressure on the throttle to maintain the speed. And thus much better fuel economy, in addition to making the drive much much more fun.

What this means in practice, is to avoid the temptation to up-shift the gear at 2000 rpm , but to instead up-shift at 3000 rpm while doing highways. (In city driving, I would recommend up-shifting a bit earlier - maybe 2500 to 2700 rpm)

Only two things that needs some attention (1) when you are in the first or second gear, it obviously makes more sense to up-shift early (2) in all gears, climb up the rpms with a light foot (don't use a heavy foot, in the rush to go to a higher gear)

I know this is counter-intuitive - but it works ;-)

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Fuel efficiency of my cars

Innova 2.5V (2009, 1,20,000 on odo)
Bangalore city before covid-10.8 kmpl. After covid, 12.1 kmpl (50% on outer ring road and balance 50 on E city tollway and empty roads.)
Highway. Usually 13.8 KM Bangalore to Kannur and 12 KM on return trip. Loaded to brim and uphill climbs are the reasons.

Grand i10 1.2 Automatic (2019 10K odo)
11-12 kmpl in city and 13-14.5 on highways depending on speed and load. 4 speed torque convertor is the main culprit here.

Crysta 2.8z
New addition to our garage. MID shows 12.4 after reset-all city use. Will update more later.

NB: I feel jealous when people post mileage over 20 kmpl which I can only dream of. Afterall mileage is not everything

Three things:
1. I clearly remember my driving instructor telling me that I need to shift to 4th gear at 40 kmph and 5th gear at 60 kmph. He said that like a few hundred times so I invariably end up shifting based on my speed perception. I blame him and my motor memory for this habit. I'll try consciously shifting a bit later especially for the last two gears, when I take the i10 to a highway next.
2. My i10 somehow feels strained when I take it beyond 2500 rpm. It might just be the noise, but I feel jittery when I hear any engine noise on an otherwise quite restrained car.
3. Damn, 20+ kmpl on a 15-year-old petrol Fiesta is utterly awesome.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Car: 2018 Yaris 1.5 CVT
Odo: ~13500km
Road: Bangalore - Hyderabad highway
AC: Auto set to 25C (since outside temp was 18C, only heater was on)
From Whitefield to a dhaba near Anantpur I got the following mileage:
What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?-20211225_080039.jpg

Overall trip mileage (Blr - Hyd - Blr) as per tank full method was 22kmpl.

I normally drive with cruise control set to 80kph and the car returns fantastic fuel economy.

Petrol engines can easily handle 3000 rpm all day along.

The engine would definitely feel a lot more eager and responsive at 2500 to 3000 rpm. That's because of the engine developing a lot more torque at that rpm range.

Some people may find all that eagerness and responsiveness of the engine at higher rpms a bit scary - you may feel that you are not able to control the power of the car. If you feel so, then you might be better off keeping the engine at lower rpms. But if you can adapt to the higher torque at the higher rpm range - then you can simply keep it under control by merely feathering the throttle (and taking off your foot from the throttle every once in a while)

It can add oodles of fun to your drive, as well as give you great fuel efficiency.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

To get maximum FE on highways, drive in the band that has the highest torque. In modern MPFI petrol engines it is around 3,000 RPM and in some engines around 4,000 RPM. The torque curves for most engines are available on-line, just a bit of search is required. Needless to say 5th gear is always desirable for maximum FE, but at too low RPM it will be counterproductive.

My Alto 10 torque is biased toward higher RPM and it gives excellent FE when driven hard - 4K RPM or more (cutoff at 6,250 RPM)
