FE Gurus, Need your help here.

Our 1996 Esteem Vxi has been giving us a really low FE of ~5-7Kmpl with the AC on 100% in city driving. We never take it on highways. It gets its regular oil change and servicing doing. However, the FE still remains low. Any suggestion to increase the FE welcome. BTW the car is pure stock(no mods of any kind).

Is there any thread which tells us how to get an accurate measure of fuel efficiency?

What I did was fill up the tank, note down the litres of petrol going in and drive on till the needle touched the red line, then fill tank again to see how many litres go in. I got a reading of 16.94 for my Alto (100% AC driving on Bombay roads)

Is there any other way of getting a more accurate reading?

travelwriter,

The full tank to full tank method is the best way to accurately gauge a vehicle's FE. Take an average of these reading over a period of time (6 months) to get an overall idea of what the FE is.

Indica Xeta GLX

My 3 year old Indica Xeta 1.4 gives just 9/10 Km in city driving and 14 on the highway. I am a very sedate driver and rarely drive at rpms exceeding 2500 rpm.

Overall the fuel efficiency is very less and TATA had advertised 14kmpl at the time of Xeta launch.

Yes sure, unless you would consider travelling to gurgaon a highway travel. I get average speed of 29km/h, so much for the expressway. I have been driving around 70kms a day. AND I did not drive with a very light foot, of course, didn't drive crazy.

My wagonR gave me 12-13km/l on the same route, with ac.

Have managed a maximum of 18km/l from the wagonR, when driving without ac [in winters] and with a very light foot. [sort of a economy run i did]

Hope that clarifies the situation a bit.

15-17 kmpl in my Swift VDi in the city with 70% AC, and 19-22 kmpl with 100% AC on the highway! And it's with quite heavy foot on the accelerator, using the turbo boost whenever possible!
