The most accurate way is to fill to the brim as the auto cut-off does not happen at the same time every time you fill up. So every time, after auto cut-off, you can see that different amounts of fuel can be filled when topping up to the brim. This itself leads to a difference in calculating the actual FE.

We all know that with the onset of summer, our cars' a/c work overtime. This year I decided to keep track of the usage of the a/c in my Alto and the resultant effect it had on the FE.

Since Feb this year, I have been using the a/c and kept a close eye on the FE delivered. The best FE I have got with the a/c on in the Alto was 17.8 kmpl and the worst has been 17.1 kmpl.

All drives only in the city, a/c on 35% to 50% of the total distance driven.

Did a Chennai - Sirkali trip last week end by Alto LXi. Total pax = 3, light overnight luggage, tyre pressure 32 PSI and AC on throughout. Total distance covered 507.8 KM, almost entirely on highway. Speed maintained 70 - 85 KPH.

Started out with a full tank of Super unleaded from Shell, reached Pondy via NH 45 and topped up the tank with 6.90 litres of Speed 93 at the Ashram bunk. Distance covered 144.4 KM, mileage recorded 20.92 KMPL.

Returned to Pondy from Sirkali the next day and again topped up at the same bunk with 13.23 litres of Speed 93. Distance covered 216.8 KM, mileage recorded 16.39 KMPL.

Arrived at the same Shell bunk in Chennai via the ECR and topped up again with 6.910 litres of Super unleaded.Distance covered 146.6 KM, mileage recorded 21.22 KMPL.

Total distance covered 507.8 KM, fuel consumed 27.04 litres, overall mileage 18.78 KMPL.

I had to keep A/c on full blast because of my brother's family being in pune. fully occupied car with a/c on full blast and my ikon returns 12 kmpl. all in city driving. Earlier it used to be 13.5 to 14.
If the mileage doesn't improve post summer, I might have to get my car completely checked for drop in mileage.

I do keep my tyre at 30 psi. Is 32 recommended?

Thats quite good difference with Shell you are seeing.

My Civic AT seems to have settled at about 11.5 kmpl these days after a lot of driving in city and long trips. Most of the driving is in city(80%) with occasional long trips (50+ kms). I keep the tire pressure at 32 psi on all four.

Top speed 100 KmPH, mostly kept at 80 KmPH.

In Mumbai I got 16KmPL with AC between Kharghar-Bandra for a month. Of course it was run-in period and I never went above 2K RPM

Increasing the tyre pressure a few notches does help on a long drive.

The difference is mainly due to road and traffic conditions. The Ashram bunk at Pondy is as good as Shell IMO. See the Pondy-Chennai mileage!

Recommended presssure is only 30 PSI, keeping it slightly above helps.

I used Shell for my Glady and got a mileage of 50-55 (Navi Mumbai - Pune run). next time I had to fill in Indian Oil's premium petrol as Shell was closed .. it returned a awesome 65 KmPL... yes I was amazed too! Tried it again and similar results (this time it was 63.5). riding conditions were similar and speeds were also almost identical (Since I do that run every week ends). This is while maintaining a top speed of 80 and RPM kept limited to 6K.

When I attempted 100+ speeds the bike returned me a mileage of 45, regular petrol.

Forgot to mention earlier the below text (from #2200) was an almost 40-60 mix of BP Regular and BP Premium fuels.

Wagon R - 99% AC, Mumbai - Kolhapur - Sankeshwar - Amboli - Goa. After that about 200 Kms in Goa and then Goa - Mumbai (NH17). Mileage achieved - 16.9 KmPL.

I am getting a constant of 12.5 kmpl in Altis Manual. 99% AC on and mostly city driving. At highway I got overall 12.8kmpl. I drove stretchs of 15 km (twice) with light foot and in a very sober manner (between 80 and 100) and was surprised to get an average of 16.1 kmpl but it was too boaring so I raced again in the range 120-160 kmph.
