Just checked again on Tuesday. Got 13.4 in the city. Never had gone so high. The only thing that I can think that happened different to the other times is that I got my car serviced at a different place this time.
I'm definitely going to stick to them.
Is there a strong relationship between mileage and the thread left on your tyres?

what ? can you both please mention at what speeds do you manage these mileages? whats the tyre profile and is the car stock.

with the FFE and michelins xm1+ 155/65/R12 i never get above 19 on highways and city mileage of around 17.

highway speeds 80-120 varies on expressway.

This is a joke

No way an Alto gives so much mileage.

17 kmpl (without A/C) within city thing is OK.

23 kmpl on highway (without A/C) driving is the max mileage you can achieve on the Alto.

Maybe you need to check your speedo caliberation.

may be he is on a "max mileage contest" every time he drives. Well, in my place I'v heard some dealers quote that kind of mileage for boosting/selling the cars'.

@Pavan Kadam
It is a mileage test done under the most ideal conditions, as described by me in another thread:

@SDP
Select a leisurely Sunday morning. Take your car to the best bunk and fill it first up to auto cut off. After auto cut off, make them manually fill up to an inch below the fuel lid. Wait for about 15 seconds to see if the tank "burps"! If it does, fill some more till it comes to an inch below the lid. The visual level is important. Inflate all tyres to 32 PSI.

Set the trip meter to zero and take the car on a nice highway where you can drive at constant speed in 5th gear without many gear changes. Drive for 50 KM at a steady 70 KPH, either alone or with one companion. AC can be on or off as you wish, but keep the windows rolled up. Take a U turn and return to the same bunk and same nozzle. Again fill petrol as described in para 1. Divide the distance covered (100 KM) by the quantity filled. This will give you the best mileage your car is capable of under the most ideal conditions. If the figure is good ( I bet it will be > 20 KMPL), there is nothing wrong with your car. Safely knock off 6 - 7 KMPL from this figure to arrive at an approximate city mileage figure you can expect under "normal" city traffic.

It would be even better if you can do this three times with a gap of three months in between, and take the resulting average!

Started out with a full tank of Super unleaded from Shell, reached Pondy via NH 45 and topped up the tank with 6.90 litres of Speed 93 at the Ashram bunk. Distance covered 144.4 KM, mileage recorded 20.92 KMPL.

Returned to Pondy from Sirkali the next day and again topped up at the same bunk with 13.23 litres of Speed 93. Distance covered 216.8 KM, mileage recorded 16.39 KMPL.

Arrived at the same Shell bunk in Chennai via the ECR and topped up again with 6.910 litres of Super unleaded.Distance covered 146.6 KM, mileage recorded 21.22 KMPL.

Total distance covered 507.8 KM, fuel consumed 27.04 litres, overall mileage 18.78 KMPL.

Filled 17.99 litres of Shell Super this morning, after a gap of 21 days. The trip meter read 271.2 KM, FE 15.07 KMPL. Entirely city driving, though not bumper to bumper, with mostly 2 pax, sometimes 3. Full AC. Not bad, I thought, as I don't drive daily and considering the car is parked in the open, there must be evaporation loss as well.

Then just for fun, I set the trip meter to zero and went for a highway drive on the Chennai bye-pass road. Comfortable drive at 60 - 70 KPH and switched on the AC only for the last 12 KM as it had become very warm. Arrived back at Shell and filled the tank again. She took in 1.520 litres till the brim. Distance covered 45.8 KM, so the indicated FE was 30.13 KMPL! My heart simply refused to accept this figure! So I went in to pay the bill, then told them to clean my windshield. All this took about ten minutes, so I opened the petrol lid to check. The level had gone down slightly, so told the attendant to top her off and she did. This time car took another 0.24 litres, and the recalculated FE was 26.02 KMPL. Finally satisfied, I went home!
As it is a Shell bunk (no crowd, you see!), I can afford to wait for a few minutes to see if the fuel level settles down and fill some more if necessary. Since it is a visual level I feel it is more accurate than the auto cut off, and you can see this 26.xx KMPL repeated twice under such "test" conditions. And a lower figure during an actual outstation trip!

@dhanushs
I am perfectly willing to do the same test in your presence! Just PM me whenever you are in Chennai!

@Amit_mechengg
Speed maintained at a constant 70 - 80 KPH for the test.

Ok, now this makes sense. You did mention that you filled up at Shell. Have you tried this test with any other brand? If yes, were the results as good?

Car is completely stock. Tyres are MRF ZVTS, pressure 32 PSI. Speed 70 - 80 KPH for highway, 50 - 70 KPH for city. Fuel is Shell super unleaded from the day I bought the car, engine oil is Shell Helix HX 5 from the first service.

As I don't use my car everyday, I will do one such check just before and after a service. If everything seems OK, will forget it till the next service.

My car is yet to sip fuel in a PSU bunk in the city, other than the 5 litre IOC coupon the dealer gave me on the day of delivery of the car! But I have filled Speed petrol from the Ashram bunk in Pondicherry a few times and the highway mileage obtained wad identical to the Shell figures. This bunk is as good as Shell in every way - they are courteous, show you zero before delivery and give you a pump printed bill at the end. The only thing missing is the free windscreen cleaning!

Update at 24000 kms - City is now Bangalore (from Mumbai)
City with 100% a/c - 13.5 consistent
City w/o a/c (thanks to blr weather now) - 15.0 consistent
(This is on the ORR 40kms daily between KRPuram and Hosur Road)

I fill for 1000 bucks within 4-5 kms of fuel indicator lighting up and reset my trip meter.
Used to travel (280 -290) kms before the indicator shows up again @18.4 ltrs.
With the recent price hike, (256) @ 17.15 ltrs

In Mumbai city, was around 11.5 to 12 (90% ac) and 10.5 till abt first 6000 kms.

Highway figures are around 17 (100+ speeds) and 90% ac.
Best 19.

Gansan, I agree with your figures. I too have a completely stock Alto. IMHO, the sweet spot for the Alto is to drive at speeds between 50 and 60 in top gear to get max mileage. I remember years back when returning from Goa to Mumbai, I drove (4people + luggage), maintaining speeds between 55 and 65 and got a mileage of 24kmpl, AC was used very less, just around 10% of the time, tyres were 32psi. The journey included ghat sections, so if one does flat open highways at speeds around 60, you can get around 25kmpl without AC. It's just that we seldom drive at such low speeds on highways in order to complete our journeys quickly.

Also IMHO, the mileage of the alto drops substantially at speeds above 90. I generally stick to 75-80kmph on Alto for stress free and good mileage driving, except when on the Mum-Pune expressway where I go at 100kmph.

Just checked the mileage of my NHC 2006 after the 40k service last week.

544Km / 38litre = 14.3 kmpl
The drive was 80% highway (speed was kept under 110).
all this in around 60% AC.
Stock s322 175/65 R 14 on stock rims.

Is this a good mileage?
