Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

I am getting between 20 to 23 km per liter as per mid which I think is mostly accurate .This is for my Jeep Compass.

My SCross Alpha (1.3L) returns an average of 17-18kmpl in Kolkata with 100% AC. It is predominantly used for city runs. 21-23kmpl with 100% AC on highways is easily doable when complying with highway speed limits.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Honda WRV i-DTEC. Run 3050 KM

City commute, Hyderabad.
Heavy traffic. 40 km/day. AC 100%. First Tankful to Tankful method milage 18.5 kmpl.

Similar parameters, another reading 19.3kmpl.

Highway drive. Hyderabad to Vijayawada and back. 100% AC. Two passengers. Speed ranging from 90-120 km.

22.34 kmpl. Tankful to Tankful method.

MID always shows an excess of 1.4 kmpl.

Wow! Are there any automatics which deliver this kind of FE in city driving?

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

I am getting 18.6 kmpl through tank to tank method in my 9 years old Manza Diesel with 90% AC in mixed driving of bumper to bumper traffic and highway sprints.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Had a Tank fill today. Nexon Diesel. Filled at Shell
FE as per MID: 20.4
FE as per T2T: 16 (error rate 27% approx)
FE as per mathematical calculation (Trip+DTE)/40.5: 16.2

Trip 478Km
DTE 177KM
Usage 100% city (average speed varying 14-20KMPL)

There should be a legal binding on the FE shown on the MID. Every car shows more FE than actual. But errors above 10% are surely on purpose.

For sure. Tata Nexon calculates correct FE but it displays with high error.

Enough of legal binding. The fault may not be intentional. There are so many variables in the collected data for the ECU to process and arrive at the FE value. They say ' Variables won't and constants aren't'.
FE figures vary drastically depending upon a lot of factors. One of our`cars shows 18 km/l in city one day and on another shows 13 km/l. It is not the traffic condition, which is the obvious one, alone is not the reason. Even humidity and ambient air temperature has a role to play in altering the FE figures slightly.

I will narrate an interesting anecdote about VCRs which were famous in 1980s.
In the early days of VCR, they noticed one thing: that the VCRs sold in Europe worked well without any issue at all times while the VCRs sold in Asia some times showed excessive jitters in the video. Actually other than the color standards, the basic circuitry was the same across all VCRs.
After much head scratching and hand wringing, they accidentally landed on the correct diagnosis: humidity.
Humidity caused the VHS tapes to 'bind' to the rotating heads slightly and this caused a drag inducing jitters. There was already a humidity sensor near the head which would lock down the VCR in case of excessive humidity. They calibrated the sensor and the ECU was fed the input from the sensor to supply a linear line to the Video processor to weed out the effects of the binding. Long story short, a technical solution was found to trap the varying humidity level when it affected the correct operation.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

FE by vehicle and type of drive:
Octavia 1.8 TSI DSG:
In-city (heavy traffic) - 8 kmpl by MID (supported by all data)
Highway / open stretches: 12-15 kmpl over full tanks and similar numbers on MID (depends on the run and type of road, traffic etc. but easily crosses 12 in all cases)

Hexa XTA:
In-city (moderate traffic) - 9.5 kmpl
Highway / open stretches: 12-14 kmpl

Honda Brio VXi (AT):
In-city (moderate traffic) - 8 kmpl
Highway / open stretches: 13-14 kmpl

Honda City (2010 model - MT):
In-city (moderate traffic) - 10 kmpl
Highway / open stretches: 15 kmpl

Brio and City don't have MID data so those are approximated over a longer duration.

FE
For calculating FE for a trip, there are two variables:
1. distance travelled, which is measured very accurately
2. Fuel consumed. This is fairly accurate, especially when the car is not moving.

Also, note that in any car, the MID always shows more FE than actual. How is it possible if it is not intentional?

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

My Rapid 1.6 Petrol MT gives me an average of 14.5 KMpL in city traffic, which is usually very sparse. On highway, with 4 on board, I have achieved 21 KMpL thrice, but usually it is around 19 KMpL. I either settle at the 80KMpH alarm, or slow down. ONLY ONCE, for the thrill of the 1.6litre engine power, crossed 120, and it came down to 11 KMpL.

Will try and post pictures, when I manage to get the MID clicked by my co-passenger.
