all these modified petrol bunks and new bunks have these auto cut off. i think many of the bunks have these now. The knob which they pull for putting petrol is pulled to max and they leave it there. It has a sensor near the of the metal pipe which let the knob to push back wen the tank is full. this is not only used for full tank, if u tell so many litres or so much money then they set the limit and this stops once so much fuel is poured.

Hey Max,

The FE might drop a tiny tiny bit on full tank.
Think about it 40Litres of fuel = <40kgs which is the weight of having a child as a passenger in your car.
This is not F1 where the fuel load increases the overall weight of the car by a huge %age (because the cars themselves are so light)

Ravi_28_8 described the fuel cut off, my guess would be that almost all the new (ie newer than 5-6years?) pumps have this, so its not really an issue unless you are filling in a remote place...
And the reason i say to stop at auto cut off is because sometimes the pump attendant fills about a litre or two more after the auto cut of, because there still is some place in the tank, and that makes it difficult to fill to the exact same level next time, and hence calculations wont be accurate!

Curiosity kills the cat! I was expecting something even worse, when I had this terrible thought of measuring FE of my 1.6 Petra. Anyway, don't know what hit me and I decided to measure FE of my car. I was expecting something around 8-9 kmpl (and secretly fearing around 7-8), but I was pleasantly surprised when the car averaged more than 11 kmpl in Pune. Not bad, not bad! Curiosity didn't kill the cat this time.

My Petra petol FE is 8-9 in city and 12-13 on highways with a/c on 50% of the time

I have posted my March 2003 Indica LSi's best and worst FE figures in another thread.
For those of you interested, the overall FE as of today stands at 11 kpl. This has been measured as follows:

First tankful at odo reading 00046
Latest tankful at odo reading 38755
Total fuel filled: 3519.28 litres
Distance between tankfuls: 38709 km
Overall average FE: 11 kpl

Over this distance, my usage has been 90% city / 10% highway. All with 100% A/C usage.

Petrol Density is around 0.7, so for 40 ltrs filled in, you actually put in 28kgs weight. Half tank translates into 14kilos, which is not much.

Therefore, the choice is between that extra kilometer (and say 100 ml of petrol = say Rs. 4/-) vs 14 kgs extra in the tank reducing the mileage by x kmpl. If x > 1, then keep the tank half full, else top it up.

I think its better to fill in a full tank and save on visits to the petrol pump rather than fill in less, and make more trips. Plus, you don't run out of petrol that often and also the mileage calculations are more accurate.

For my Palio 1.2 NV, the city FE in Bangalore is 11 kpl with around 70% AC usage.
Highway FE is 16 kpl.

Thats pretty good !
Just like RX135 I was a bit apprehensive abt the figure hence resisted calculating the FE of my Indica LGi for 3 months ..hehe
But did so couple of weeks ago and it came out to be a solid 14kpl !
(60 highway/40 city driving with 10% AC usage...)
that 40 city is thru horror Pune traffic though on sat/sundays....

Opel Corsa 1.4 Gsi

City Driving- 7 to 7.5 kmpl
Highway- 10 to 10.5 kmpl

My ada's extremely dissapointed with the mileage, and the car is not driven rashly and revved to the limits or antyhing, its driven by a careful driver.
