Tata expects CNG models to make up 30% of sales by 2030

Tata Motors expects CNG-powered cars to account for 30% of total sales by 2030. The carmaker also sees the market share of EVs, CNG cars and petrol vehicles to be almost equal by the end of this decade.

Shailesh Chandra, MD of Tata's passenger vehicles division, has stated that CNG penetration is expected to rise from 10% to 25% by the end of the decade. Despite the increase in prices of CNG, the segment grew by 52% compared to the overall market growth of 27%.

Currently, there are almost 17 CNG models in the market, with around 30,000-35,000 units sold every month. Private car buyers account for 80% of the sales. Reports suggest that the share of taxi buyers has dropped in the last few years.

Tata currently offers CNG variants of the Tiago, and Tigor, while the Altroz and Punch get the brand's latest tech which uses dual cylinders instead of a single large CNG cylinder, which otherwise takes up a lot of space in the boot. The carmaker sells around 12,000 CNG models per month.

So it seems the fervor of EVs is dying down. Finally reality is catching up with the fantasy world.

On the contrary it seems EVs will take up a lot of space of the passenger car market. A 30% share in 7 odd years of the passenger market means almost atleast a million EVs sold per year.

The CNG vehicle market is primarily hampered by the lack of filling station infrastructure. Though it is now improving, better availability of filling stations would boost this segment.

Another important aspect is, bringing popular vehicles into CNG fold. This might also boost the demand.

If I remember correctly, just 4 months ago Tata said EVs will be 50% of their sales by 2030. If the projection changes by 20% every 4 months, it is as good as no projection, probably even worse.

Re: Tata expects CNG models to make up 30% of sales by 2030

Don't know about 30%, but Tata's CNG sales will only grow because:

- Their CNG execution is fantastic! The best I've ever seen from an OEM. From the fit & finish to the buttons to the engine tuning. Nothing quite like the Tiago / Tigor / Altroz CNGs for those with very high running. In comparison, the CNG kits of some other OEMs feel like jugaad.

- Tata plans to bring ATs to their CNG cars. Now, that will really be something.

- The rising prices of petrol & the death of diesel in small cars.

- CNG prices might have gotten expensive, but the FE is still a lot higher than petrol if you drive with a light foot.

- The CNG network is expanding.

- Last but not the least, while it may be a bit inconvenient to fill CNG, it's still way more convenient & faster than filling up an EV on the go. Of course, if you have home charging, nothing to beat an EV.

Another major factor is that CNG cars remain more of less unaffected by the entire E20 petrol nonsense. Tata CNG cars which even start on gas can pretty much run their entire life without using a drop of petrol. Once E20 becomes mainstream, petrol cars will all observe drop in power, performance and fuel efficiency. But no change in the CNG universe. The delta between the fuels will reduce.

Maruti’s jugaad implemented of CNG played a big role in giving gas a poor and cheap image. Tata is showing that doesn’t have to be the case. Introduction of CNG automatics will be an absolute game changer.
