One noob to another :

In essence, a higher than usual gear ratio allowing for lower engine rpms while at the same time maintaining higher output speeds for cruising, thus increasing efficiency. I really don't know what the advantage is however, for having 4th and 5th gears as overdrive. I suppose it allows you to cruise at a wider range of speeds thus making it capable for you to spend less on fuel.

I would see this as a disadvantage in a big 1.6 liter petrol motor because 3rd gear in a Palio is capable of accelerating the car upto about 120kph if I remember accurately. I do not encounter many circumstances where I want to cruise efficiently beyond 100 but not as efficiently as is possible with the 5th gear. This would also mean that there would be less than optimum acceleration beyond 120kph in the Palio's case, since when in overdrive, the engine rpm will be under the required revs for peak torque output.

Experts, please correct me if I am wrong here

The Palio 1.6 can do 100 on speedo in the 2nd gear itself.

I stand corrected. Anyway, specifics aside, I was trying to explain what an overdrive is and why I believe having both 4th and 5th gears as overdrive, is a disadvantage. 100 in second is impressive but isn't that what an S10 is capable of? I didn't know the GTX could do the same.

Anyway thanks

Not sure of GTX and S10 capabilities. the 1.6 sport can do only 80 KMPH in second gear.
3rd gear upto 120.
4th upto 145 and the mighty
5th upto 179/179 which is the top speed of it.

Source: Owned it for 6+years. Loved it & read the manual a dozen times. I may be wrong though as i am more of a short term memory loss person.

Re: Palio 1.6 GTX v/s Palio 1.6 Sport - Visible Differences

Both car wont touch 100 in second gear. The revv limiter is 7200rpm and it think its close to 87 or 89kmph. If one can raise the revv limiter to 8k rpm then it can touch close to 100kmph in 2nd. Also only difference in s10 gear box and gtx gear box is slightly shorter 3 and 4th gear because gtx 3rd gear ratio is 1:1 which is too tall , 4th and 5th are narrowly matched (300 rpm variation). On the other hand S10 has 1:1 ratio on fourth and same 5th gear as gtx.
