Some cars look smaller than they actually are

Was just wondering on how some cars would look much smaller on road then they actually are. Perhaps this is a design illusion which many mordern cars have. In my view, Toyota Corolla is one such fine example. Its a huge car and bigger in dimensions to the Sonata(old) but still Sonata looked bigger car in comparison. Other cars which display the same characterstics of looking smaller are Corsa, Aveo, Verna etc. All these are really big cars, but wont look so when they pass by.

On the contrary, take the example of Esteem! Everyone of us knows that its a car with tiny dimensions, but still it looks big in size! Clever designing perhaps.

Any comments...

Skoda Octavia is one such car, which looks big from outside, but is smaller than Indica from inside.
Another car which comes to my mind is the discontinued Opel Astra. Does not look huge from outside, but is very spacious (read big) inside.

Corolla might not be bigger than old Sonata.

Generally it has to do with stance, rounded edges and packing of the engine bay. Now a days most Jap cars have very well packaged engine bay which increases the interior dimensions.

DCeite, I believe he is referring to the external looks.

Its all down to their design I guess. The Scorpio is another one that seems huge, but when you look at the actual numbers, its actually shorter than a Hyundai Elantra and even shorter than a NHC! Can you believe that.

Length:
Scorpio: 4325mm
Elantra:4525mm
NHC: 4390mm

Infractions: 0/1 (10)

in that context even the new sx4 looks realtively smaller when you compare it with the nhc(side profile)

And though the SX4 has larger exterior dimensions, space inside feels lesser than the city.

This probably helps explain the common gripe about the lack of seating space in a Scorpio.

IMO, the car's overall height plays a huge role in its 'wider' appearance on road. Take the Baleno..it seems much wider than SX4 or even NHC.

The SX4 looks like it has been inside a crusher and has been compacted from both sides. The odd proportions make it look much slimmer than it really is.
The other car that looks deceptively small is Verna.

On the other hand the Esteem and the Accent give a much larger impression than they actually are.

LOGAN

when looked from rear, the car looks like a small car. When i saw this car for the first time from the rear, I thought it was a modified UNO, but only till i saw the Renault logo.

Yes, I agree. Maruti Versa looks bigger than Swift from a distance.
It is 3675mm length and Swift is 3695mm. I think the car which has greater height looks big.

Compare Swift and Getz---the former looks much larger, but when you get inside each car, you get the opposite impression.
I agree that Verna looks smaller than an Accent, but is bigger inside.

Yeah.. Many cars have this look Might be because of the bonnet design.. Those Aero dynamic ones will not be looked outside as a BIG car.. On ACtual size Aveo is lengthir than an Accent.. but they look otherwise when standing alone!!!
