Have travelled 850 kms in matador diesel ambassador several times both with and without A/C. Seldom got tired. Have driven adventure 850 kms in two days span. Never felt tired or lousy. It is meant for bad roads. Will be doing a 2500 kms drive shortly.

XETA was comfortable and Spacious for 3 on a Road trip to Mussorie and Haridwar, Took us well and safe..all through rains and bad roads, din't complain !

Total Distance 600 Km- Delhi-Dehradoon-Mussorie-Haridwar-Faridabad-Delhi

Oh yes, Since I have a CNG tank in the boot, the bags were piled on one side, even then it made a comfy journey.

Comfortable cars I have driven:

1.) Daewoo Matiz: Spot on Ergonomics. I would just plonk myself on the drivers seat and I'd be right where I wanted to be and all the controls were so perfectly placed. Only sore point was the absence of a dead pedal but back then I didn't even know that something like a dead pedal exists so it didn't matter then.

2.) Fiat Palio: Supremely comfortable IF the seats are in the right spot. And it's extremely difficult to get that perfect driving position in the Palio. If the seats get disturbed from my most comfortable setting, it takes me weeks to get it back to that setting again! Dead pedal is a boon and a must have for me now.

3.) Toyota Innova: Drove the diesel one from Lonavala to Mumbai and loved it. Only sore points were too light clutch and steering. Gear lever judder was irritating too.

By the way, why not list down worst cars to drive long distances to? Mine is:

1.) Hyundai Santro: No matter how I adjusted the seats, I had a ankle and back ache in 20 mins of driving. The car in question was the first lot of Santro's with 55bhp and the rodent grille. Not sure if Hyundai changed the ergonomics after that.

2.) Surprisingly, for a German car, the Mark V VW Jetta was horribly uncomfortable. It was an automatic with a dead pedal and a arm rest but again no matter how I adjusted the seats, I was rarely comfortable. Surprisingly, the variant with leather seats was much better in comfort. Wonder how the Skoda Laura fares.

The cars I have driven for more than 200 kms continuosly:
1. Elantra CRDi
2. NHC
3. Indica V2 DLS

I liked all the three, in the above mentioned order, only i felt the need of Turbo in indica while overtaking with AC on.

Going by latest experiences, say last few years, best is Acura 3.2 TL, Baleno followed by Santro. My worst experience is with Omni.

But if I take my entire driving experience, it becomes very hazy. One reason being I mostly used rental cars for long drives and every time a different one. Since the roads were mostly perfect, it is very difficult to differentiate one from the other.

Swift is certainly out of this list. The seats are just not comfortable at all.

Zen, Palio etc are Ok for long drives, for me. Omni is a strict no-no for me, because of it's dynamics and handling.

Nothing is better than APNA gaadi.

Drive a Merc! Any of it. There is nothing more comfortable for long journeys.

My desirables:
  1. Merc (Anything from them. Yes, even their Bicycles are very comfortable for long distance rides).
  2. Accord (Even the 2.4L is a great distance monger).
  3. Toyota Camry (Great seats).
  4. Innova V (Strictly V and nothing below it).
  5. Baleno (Driver's point of view only).
But the most important fact is that there is nothing to match the pleasure of driving one's APNA gaadi on a long comfortable road. Even an Alto or Omni may look great to it's owners.

FRom my experience its Toyota camry (Previous generation) that wins hands down keeping the budget below the super luxury segment.

Tata Safari is another awesome mile muncher but the driving part wasnt that great .

Quote:
PS : Add a pole taking the best munchers by segment , for example some have mentioned Getz , Zen etc . As far as a reader is conerned very soon there are going to be more than 30 pages and its not going to be easy to deduce anything quickly.

For long drives out of city, I prefer a car which has
1. Big Booty - Because I take a lot of kids stuff while traveling
2. Good ride & Handling - Because I like to drive.
3. Good power to overtake.
4. Feel safe.

Petra fits in all of these, with 500litres boot, 1.6 litre 100BHP engine and it just glides on highways giving a real carpet ride. I had travelled/Drove 500km continously in my petra without any problem.

With 5.5 lac on road(My Budget), I couldnot get any better car in Bangalore at that time.
Cheers.
