ET reports that Honda will launch the Civic Hybrid in India next year. Could this be the reason for the dilly dallying with diesel that Honda's been doing?

Apart from the obvious advantages, I think, Honda is trying to outdo Toyota by bringing in it's hybrids into India earlier. In the US, hybrid has become synonymous with Toyota and Honda had to withdraw it's Insight hybrid car due to measly sales.

Civic hybrids will be CBU's and that will be one of the reasons for the almost Rs. 20 lakhs price tag! :Shockked:

guys, according to the latest report by the economic times, honda might be launching its hybrid civic by next year.
it would be coming as a CBU and would cost around 20 lacs.
Do you think it makes sense to buy one.

hybrid cars sell well in countries like USA because, people who buy these cars, keep there cars for a very long time and do extensive road travel unlike india where we change are cars in every 3-5 years and mostly travel by trains, planes over long distances

bringing in a hybrid civic, doesnt make any sense now. i do believe its fuel efficient and environment friendly but a 20 lakh price tag for the same car priced at 11-12 lacs. it might do well only if comes as a CKD unit and get assembled here and priced not more than 15/16 lacs. there would hardly be any demand for the hybrid civic.

It doesnt talk about fuel economy. It must be around 45mpg i'm just guessing which would be 18-19kmpl. Well people could buy cheaper cars and get as much. Or maybe a couple of km's lesser per liter and use the remaining money to run the car and still have money left.

at 20 lakhs, CRV- yes, Accord- yes!
Civic at 20L? No! Sorry Honda.

Sure good thing its a hybrid though! ;)
(Even otherwise, dont have money to buy even the regular civic :D)

Problem taken care of.

Sanchits, in future please remember not to pick up someone else's post verbatim and spawn a new thread out of it. Its plagiarism, besides spamming of the board.

I have my serious doubts on ET's article. Honda would be hard-pressed to price the Civic hybrid competitively, with most comparable diesel cars (even the Laura!) working out cheaper. But there is a chance that a hybrid may give better FE gains in India than the States due to our traffic conditions.

Civic at 20L NO WAY.

oops.. voted yes without seeing the price. 20L is way too much. A normal civic for 13 lakhs + 5 yrs of petrol cost (assuming 1 lakh/yr) is still less. price of 15 lakhs mite make sense.

voted no, would rather have a city in hybrid form. Then would like the government to provide some subsidy. For Civic, the wonderful clean diesel would be what I want.

agree:

The 2.2 L diesel equipped Civic would be a fabulous car to have. BUT, knowing Honda and the premium they charge for their products, they would probably price the Civic D at Honda Accord levels! Hopefully it wouldn't be priced with the V6 Accord! :Frustrati

20 lakh for a car costing 12 Lakh, No way...It wont even break even during the life of the car, especially India where we do not do that long distances with the car.

So the article in today's TOI says that ARAI could not test test this vehicle for any homlogation certs, as it isn't equipped to do so. Honda had to return the car back to Japan. Wonder if 2008 will still be the year we get the Hybrid on the roads.
