Driving with temporary registration?

dear BHPians,
can some one advise on following things regarding car registration
(a) how long one can drive with temporary registration
(b) can one go out to other states
(c) would one need to carry some slip indicating that
" applied for permanent registration" by some authority

a. Nothing more than a month. I know someone who postponed the permanent registration of his brand new car for personal reasons for more than a month. Yet- this should be an isolated case

b. Nothing prevents that from happening. But a big legal issue in case of accident. Point 9 in this article can be interpreted in various ways by different parties depending on circumstances.

c. The tax-paid receipt of the RTO registration process alongwith the delivery invoice of your car should plug the gap till your registration plates arrive

i think mag has covered all the points

a) 1 month and usually validity (actual date) is in the temp reg paper
b) you can, but ideally avoid. temp reg is generally given to transport the vehicle to your local rto.
c) carry the invoice for the vehicle, temp reg paper and most imp the insurance cover note.

I know of people who had temp RCs for as long as a year just to get themselves a number of their choice. But there should be no problems driving in another state as long as your temp RC is valid. I see a lot of AP temp RCs in chennai straight from tirupati, i guess.

Agree with you. Many people in AP wait till they get the number they wanted. Have seen so many like that. Even if somebody catches, people know how to escape. T/R is valid for one month. I do not think there will be any problem to travel in other states with T/R. I too have travelled from Hyderabad to nagapattinam with T/R. Nobody has questioned me throughout my journey for one week.

Even if they do question you, you have valid papers, there is no reason to be jittery about this.
cheers

I have seen the Temporary registration thingy mostly in hyderabad as well as in Kerala among the places i have lived/been in. Here in Bangalore, this is quite rare.

The validity for the T/R is a month, as the others have pointed out.

EDIT : Replying to Abhilash's post below
In hyderabad, the permanent registration happens only after a month !!

In Bangalore I was told that the showroom will not release the vehicle unless it is registered . Rarely I see vehicles with temp registration unlike Kerala ,where the permanent registration happens after 10 to 15 days.

Folks have exactly the same questions as the original poster... Dealer has assured he can provide the invoice, insurance and the temporary sticker... I will be driving only within the state (Maharashtra) though, anything else I MUST have on hand?

This is the rule in kerala for vehicles with Temp. Regn:

Temporary registration is issued to a new vehicle to transport it from the place of Purchase to the place of Registration. The Temp. Regn. is issued for a period of 7 days.

But for a chasis to which a body has to be built, the validity is for one month. Extension in this case will be allowed making an application for extension of Temp.Regn.,stating the reason for extension.

No mention about the limit where a temp.registered can be driven.?
However since they have given the reason for what purpose the temporary registration is allowed, if needed cops can interfere when you take the car elsewhere !

Questions on temporary registration?

I have questions regarding temporary registration in Karnataka:

1. Can the dealer get a temporary registration in the owner's name without owner's signature (in Karnataka)?

2. Can the owner refuse the vehicle and get a complete refund after temporary registration is done (technically road tax is not paid)?

3. How is it that the dealers have a pool of temporary registrations with them and are able to assign the TR to any vehicle that is being delivered?

Thanks.

Re: Questions on temporary registration?

I dont have the answers, my guess is that with the year end pressure, there is a lag in RTO being to register all the cars. Navnit have given a temp reg till the paperwork is processed
