Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

Dislikes:
Touchscreens - Driver needs eyes off the road to operate them. Rotary knobs and physical buttons any day.
Piano black shiny plastic - Scratch magnets.
Connected Car Tech - Why?!
Oversized alloys - The ratio of good rubber to alloys. I prefer smaller alloys and larger sidewalls. Better ride quality. Additionally, they are cheaper to replace too. Anything above 16" is an overkill. My Pajero Sport runs on 17", but given the width of 265mm, it has a tolerable sidewall. Still, some ruts and expansion joints on flyovers are jarring.
White LED headlights - Literally the worst thing ever. Useless in rain and fog and blinding to oncoming traffic.
Bling - Whether it's oversized grills, everything chrome, too much lighting (end to end) or too many creases and cuts that serve no purpose, except making it tough to keep clean.
Space saver Tyre or No spare - Just some MBAs earning their salaries.
Too much info - Digital displays showing a thousand irrelevant things, voiceovers. Apparently, it also rates your driving performance (Suzuki Invicto). All we need is a speedometer, odometer and a temp and fuel gauge. The rest are immaterial.
Auto everything - Automatic lights, auto dimming, rain-sensing wipers, ADAS (questionable use, not foolproof).

Likes:
Ventilated Seats - I don't have one in mine, but the ones I tried, it's a blessing in this country.
On-screen Navigation - Another blessing that you don't have to latch your phone on to the dashboard or windscreen, which could become a projectile.

Neutral:
Sunroof - Don't stick your kids, your wife, girlfriend, or mother in-law out, unless you have an ulterior motive. Prefer large, panoramic sunroofs, to small death traps. They can be problematic with dust and water, so maintenance is key.

Atleast they grew on me with M cars. Still, will not prefer the new one if given a choice.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

1. The Space-Saver tire-- What problem do the car manufacturers have with the good old donut spare tire. With the amount of punctures happening these days, these are needed

2. Sunroofs-- These are mostly considered as a novelty feature but the fun of stopping at the side of the road at a ghat and looking out unmatched, basically any car < 20 lakhs should have one.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

I personally dislike two-spoke steering wheels, especially in the new Verna and Nexon. Their symmetry can be confusing, often leading to a split second of hesitation when checking if the wheel is straight or inverted, as I experienced during a test drive of the New Verna.

The Nexon mitigates this issue somewhat thanks to its non-horizontally symmetrical logo. However, two-spoke steering wheels remain a major turnoff for me.

Lately Hyundai cars have been such a turn-off for me. Starting from the Venue since it's launch to Verna of today. Only exception being the i20 which I think looks good, relatively.

Btw, this is coming from someone who owns the 1st Gen F/L Creta (2019) and Verna Type-5 (2017). Hyundai cars used to be absolutely gorgeous back in the day!

NO SUNROOFS PLEASE!! I 8th this motion (7 other members on this thread don't like sunroofs)
They are meant for countries with less sunlight, where on sunny days, you can absorb some much needed D3.

Moreover jokers in our country and / or their kids use sunroofs to stand up through the roof and "enjoy" the air, waiting to hit some random "manja" or flying debris etc.

They are not meant for tropical climates. I wish companies work on better roof insulation so that makes the AC work and function better.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

This might be a tiny point - But I feel like most of the mid/upper mid segment cars of yore had a one-touch power window up/down operation.

For some reason (I strongly doubt its penny pinching), nearly all vendors have turned away from this. Even 25L vehicles are now shipped without one.

I especially hate this when I sit in my hot-under-the-sun car and have to open all 4 windows simultaneously like an octopus by keeping all fingers engaged and then 5 minutes later, bring up the windows again after turning on A/C.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

Busy design: I hate the trend of everything everyone design. Designers are loathe to having any plain area, I feel. A crease here, a pattern there, a chrome garnish hear, multiple lights there. A single DRL today has become 3 in New Baleno/ Vitara. A light bar in Nexon and Harrier.

White Lights: It is absolutely nightmarish, when the vehicle coming opposite has white/ cool daylight LED lights. This is compounded with older light fixtures being changed to accommodate higher powered white lights. They just blind the opposite vehicles. Forget the morons who do not have the sense to even switch to Low beam. The traffic police is sleeping on this issue, with almost no checks.

I can't stand the sight of new BMW 7 series front grill, trying to disscet the rational behind such an unpleasant change, no offence though.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

Big Butch looking cars with interiors that can seat 4 adults

Everything looking like an SUV on the streets today - where are the sleek, svelte and sophisticated sedans like Rapid vRS, Civics, Superbs, etc?

LED Headlamps or anything with white lights - good old days with an evenly uniform yellow light throw on the road with matching Sodium Vapour Lamps were so easy on the eyes. A Night drive today means we get to see light temperatures from 3000K to 8000K - including some street lamps. My eyes hurt because of this.

Split headlamps and a big white LED tubelight on the bonnet (its now come to the rear as well with a big red LED tubelight.

Tablet sticking out from the dashboard in the name of an entertainment system, c'mon! Engineers are known for problem solving and designers are meant to make things seamlessly elegant.

Everything touchscreen and/or subscription based.

Half baked ADAS on cars - which we are paying for through our teeth - only to switch them off or disable them almost immediately after first boot.

Hideous and ugly looking humongous grills (some with so much chrome)!

Sun Roofs in India! Nuf Said!!!

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

Removing the physical buttons for basic controls like AC and Music. Nicely done physical buttons which are getting a rarity now with all the newer models, are so much nicer , easier and intutive to use. For all the craze nowadays on having sunroofs just cant understand the use and functonality of these in our climate and environment , not to mention the safety aspect. Just observe the people sticking their necks out of these without any regards for the safety, and it should come as no surprise that our roads are one of the most unsafe and dangerous in the world.. Maybe this is a topic for separate discussion itself..

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

I wanna say metal bull bars and white LEDs, but mostly everyone have a gripe on those.

I find the new trend of digitizing everything to be quirky and mostly unnecessary. I wonder how people like having two 10" screens up their faces the whole time while driving. A single phone stand does what I need, like what's the point of the rest? As someone who works in software, the whole "always connected" part is shady too and a privacy nightmare waiting to pop.

To compare, look at the digital clusters of this 2014 Audi A3 vs a typical modern one found in recent cars. Tell me which looks more appealing?

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

I hate that convenience and logic are not in the room when the new cars are getting designed. It's almost like they want to dress up a new car for a wedding. Well you don't wear a sherwani/lehanga every day. So go easy on the chrome.

We need every day convenience and comfort, like easy to access physical buttons. Add a switch to turn off the DRLs if possible. Sunroof should be optional, airbags should be compulsory, all 6 of them, across all variants. Talking about compulsory, please add the rear viper/defogger in that category. It's a safety requirement.

Maybe reduce the screen size and improve the audio quality. And why can't they make auto dimming IRVMs and autofolding ORVMs a defacto. And throw in a proper arm rest while you are at it.

A car should look like a car, not a transformer. Fake air vents, fake exhausts, enormous grills and tubelights should be add on accessories for those who like their bling. For the rest of us mango people, simple elegant design is what we crave for.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

I personally find cars having headlamps really down on the lower side of the bumper unappealing. They don’t go by my definition of cars since I like cars with clean front look which VW India, Mahindra cars have.

Car designs are now- a -days becoming too futuristic and started resembling toy cars. Eg: The new Verna, nexon. Hope all manufacturers don’t run after this trend.
