re: Next-gen Honda Amaze launched at Rs 7.99 lakhs (ex-showroom)

A lot of people have been bashing the Amaze for no reason. It looks spectacular, has a decent engine for the segment it is placed in, and is well priced. Kudos to Honda for not following the herd by launching a namesake (read barebones) base variant to keep the starting price lower. V Variant is complete in itself. Just compare the dashboard design of the Dzire with the Amaze. Honda simply outclasses maruti here. Folks who appreciate quality and class will simply go with the Amaze than the Dzire.

re: Next-gen Honda Amaze launched at Rs 7.99 lakhs (ex-showroom)

The new Amaze is a decent effort and it's goodness or mediocrity will be decided by the Final Customer in the market. This is the crux of my learning in 2 decades in the Auto Industry.

I have no qualms in saying that a vehicle is well designed only if it sells well. If the final customer does not find it appealing then it's a flop. Period. Efforts and Engineering do not mean anything in the end if it does not translate into Company targetted sales numbers. A lot of times we see sales numbers of 4k-5k and think it's mediocre but it is perfectly OK if the number sustains and that was the initial Target of the OEM as well. Maybe the above sales numbers is all the ambition that Honda has in India as of now.

Coming to the actual product, going just by the pictures, it's a lazy effort by Honda compared to the effort they put into much smaller vehicles that they sell in Japan. Design idea and part commonisation are standard working methodologies but Amaze shouts lazy. Make no mistake, if Honda were in a strong position in India like Suzuki or TATA or Hyundai, I can understand this below par effort in a segment which does not really set the charts on fire. But, Honda is in challenger mode and the new Amaze does not make sense from that point of view. Nothing stands out. Like people have rightly pointed out, ADAS is all show, very less substance. They needed bold styling and loaded variants to draw interest. Suzuki at least made the efforts (rather fortuitously, I will add) to market the useless GNCAP 5 star credentials. There is just no buzz worthy factor working for the Amaze.

If we keep fanboyism aside, we have to say City is a class product (name), but Amaze is not (and, was never) a class product - even in this new avatar.

Brio, BRV and the Amaze has done enough damage to the Honda brand.

When other manufacturers are doing such a job, people say it is a lame effort and cost cutting, but when Honda is doing it, some people call it "class".

Not sure about the loopholes, but I see an almost equal number of "private" Dzires running as yellow board taxis in Bangalore, Chennai and other cities. So I guess yellow board is not restricted to Dzire-based Tour S alone.

Having a good experience with the Brio, I have to agree that there is nothing classy with that cost conscious made-for-India platform. The Brio definitely felt inferior to the Swift at that time.

re: Next-gen Honda Amaze launched at Rs 7.99 lakhs (ex-showroom)

As someone looking for an automatic car with a budget capped at around ₹11 lakhs on road, the choice narrows down between the Dzire ZXI AGS and the Amaze V CVT. As Honda has omitted the Amaze E and S variants, I feel the V variant of the Amaze can be considered equivalent to the Dzire ZXI. The VX compares well with the ZXI+, and the Amaze ZX is a step above with ADAS which the DZire does not get at all.

The Dzire ZXI AGS costs ₹11.24 lakhs on road and the Amaze V CVT costs ₹11.08 lakhs on road (both prices are for Bangalore, taken from CarWale).

Amaze has the obvious advantage in terms of powertrain refinement (4-cyl CVT vs 3-cyl AMT), though I feel both should be on par when it comes to outright performance. The Dzire has a top-class safety rating and Maruti's aftersales support. The previous gen Amaze (South African market model) had received a 4-Star GNCAP rating, but it has been a while since that rating came out, and I'm not sure whether that would still hold good for the latest model after the stricter test protocols.

I have tried to summarise the feature differences between the two cars, apart from the obvious ones mentioned above.

Key features that the Dzire ZXI gets over Amaze V:
+ 15-inch Alloy Wheels with 185 section tyres
+ Automatic Climate Control
+ Keyless Entry with Push Button Start
+ Rear AC vents
+ Reverse Camera
+ Power folding ORVMs
+ Automatic headlamps
+ Adjustable Rear Headrests
+ Suzuki connect with smartphone connectivity

Key features that the Amaze V gets over Dzire ZXI:
+ LED projector headlamps. I'm not sure how much more effective these are over the Dzire's LED reflector headlamps.
+ Bigger 8-inch touchscreen system compared to the Dzire's 7-inch. The DZire's 7-inch system looks real bad with those CRT TV-like huge bezels.
+ Trunk lid inner lining
+ Better instrument cluster with a colour MID. The DZire gets the colour MID only on the ZXI+ trim.
+ PM2.5 cabin filter

The Dzire ZXI offers more useful features which are not easy to install in the aftermarket. But if someone is not ok with an AMT, the Amaze V isn't all that bad either, as a package.

I personally feel Honda should have offered power folding ORVMs, rear AC vents and 15-inch steel wheels on the Amaze V variant to make it a more complete package.

However, if one can slightly extend the budget to 12 lakhs (on-road), the Amaze VX CVT offers a lot more value, and it is a better pick compared to the Dzire ZXI+ AGS which costs more. For an additional 1 lakh over the V variant, it offers almost all the features that the Dzire ZXI+ offers (except adjustable rear headrests, cruise control and steering leather wrap), plus a lane watch camera and obviously a superior powertrain.

The Dzire would have been an unbeatable package if it had retained the brilliant K12 motor. Will be test driving both before taking a decision.

re: Next-gen Honda Amaze launched at Rs 7.99 lakhs (ex-showroom)

Hi, a very nice attempt by Honda with new Amaze. Most likely Honda India realize that increasing sale of Honda City is difficult and compact sedan still have respectable sales numbers, therefore, they made Amaze mix of City & Elevate. Honda probably be expecting around 4500 to 5000 units a month from new Amaze to cover up the sales shortfall created by declining sales of Honda City.

While it is difficult to foresee what will be the numbers, but I feel Honda is not aspirational brand any more and it is difficult for the Amaze to bring footfall into Honda dealership when people have doubt about Honda's future in India.

Amaze VX CVT Variant at a glance!
Does not get cruise control, gets body colored door handles, 15 inch alloy wheels without diamond cut.

Just me? Or does the car look a bit, thin? (Width wise). The wheel arches on the previous gen looked a 'bit' wider than this one? Either that, or the doors have gained some mass

Have to say this is one of those rare times when the chrome loaded blingy verison looked better than the toned down sporty looking one.

Even after taking into consideration that the under car shadow doesn't do justice to the new Amaze tyre size.

re: Next-gen Honda Amaze launched at Rs 7.99 lakhs (ex-showroom)

The question is not who is going to rule this segment. It all boils down to how will Honda Amaze fare, in respect to the outgoing model.
Can it be the runner up in this segment?

Will the New Dzire attract volumes justifying the rumoured axing of Ciaz? Will Honda City be cannibalized by the New Amaze, in terms of volumes?

The Segment:

re: Next-gen Honda Amaze launched at Rs 7.99 lakhs (ex-showroom)

The new Amaze looks good, Honda seems to have put in decent effort to keep their only sub 4-meter offering competitive in the Indian market. Their V-variant seems like a much better package than the Vxi variant of the Dzire, the cabin also looks much more up-market than the Dzire, thanks to those hideous thick bezels around the Dzire's screen.

However, the Indian market is not just about offering a marginally better or competitive product, Honda needed to really shake up the segment if they wished to compete with the Dzire as it comes with the general positives associated with Marutis and that's why the product had to offer much more, some innovative thinking like offering that 1.5, they could have offered it with the mid-spec version and priced it at par with the top variant, that would take care of the additional taxes, customers could have chosen if they wanted better performance or more features in the car, or something else maybe, something like a coupe version in very limited volume, something which would make the product aspirational, they could do something in limited volumes to limit the financial down-side.

Also, I am not really sure about the premium they are charging for the CVT variant, in certain other countries where Honda offers manual as well as CVT variants, the gap is very minimal in terms of the price, I am sharing a link for Honda's Pakistan website below, have a look at the differential in pricing of the manual and cvt variant, you will be able to understand what I am talking about

https://honda.com.pk/city1-2l

Honda is going nowhere in India and a lot of people are unsure about the future in the Indian market, yet they still seem to be milking the Indian customers as there is a 'Premium' perception associated with the automatic variants. At this point in time they should be looking to offer more value to the customers, they need to understand that Mahindra & Hyundai got where they are in the Indian market by offering a lot more value to the customers. Honda had a very good chance to stir up the segment and the industry by pricing cvt very close to the manual counterparts...but then, greed prevailed.
