Toyota has announced the launch of a new variant of the Fortuner called the "Leader Edition". It comes with a distinct design and additional features.



The Fortuner Leader Edition features a dual-tone exterior with black alloy wheels and front and rear bumper spoilers that will be installed at the dealer end. The interior boasts dual-tone seats and additional features such as TPMS, wireless charger and auto-folding ORVMs.

The Fortuner Leader Edition is powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine that produces 201 BHP and 420 Nm (MT) / 500 Nm (AT). The engine is mated with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. It does not get a 4x4 option.

The Fortuner Leader Edition is available in 3 new exterior dual-tone colours: Super white & A. Black, Platinum Pearl White & A. Black and Silver Metallic & A. Black.

Leader edition?

Isn't the non-Legender/GRS Fortuner sold in Thailand also called the Leader variant?

With lack of 4x4 option, it is apt for those who would like to be a leader on Indian roads. Felt like a tacky name when sold in Thailand, but feels like a made for politico name in India.

Couldn’t they wait a month to launch this? At least the Leader buying this would have realised by then if he was really going to be the Leader.

The Legender name atleast sounded good, Leader just sounds quite cringe. The cosmetic extras look like something picked up from the local aftermarket shop. I would want to hope the customers don't receive this well and Toyota gets the signal that they should bring in substantial changes, but we all know this variant will also be lapped up just like the legender.

On separate note, how has the GR sport variant fared ? I don't see many of those on the road as compared to the legender which seems to sell alot.

Original Toyota products cost and value of the Indian National Rupee are inversely proportional. Wonder when the Indian market will say "enough is enough" and stop buying "original" Toyota products at highly inflated prices viz, Innova Crysta, Hycross, HiLux, Camry... Toyota is "milking' it's reliable tag at all "cost" I bet most of the leaders will need a bar stool to haul themselves up into the front passenger "throne" of this Leader edition.

Toyota needs to start acting sensible with the Fortuner. There are cars that are less than half it's price and yet almost as good as the Fortuner.

Its very funny - Leader version cheaper than the regular (Legender) for aspiring leaders

On a serious note, my understanding was Leader version is a lower version of Fortuner in SEA markets with 2.4L Innova Engine offering 150hp / 350Nm figures. If they would have launched 2.4L model then it would be competing with Meridian, Top Spec XUV700 / Safari.
But It would be suicidal for the Fortuner brand, if buyers are willing to shell out 50L then launching a variant at 35L will be a margin killer (Thar 4WD vs 2WD story)

But Toyota launched it with 2.8L same spec, what is the point, why disturb your money making machine ?

Toyota, bring a Neta edition. That is what the 99% of buyers really want!

Here is a list of additional equipment or features that this Neta variant should have from factory:

1. Political style hooter siren
2. VIP flashing LED bar in windshield
3. flag mast on left fender
4. Bull bars
5. 100% opacity black sunfilms, on all windows.
6. Large sunroof for reel filming
7. Saffron-green/red-green/blue/green-white decals of current or EX designation on rear window, and Vidhayak etc stickers on the front.

Not the next-gen.

The current-gen mild hybrid, (the one that was launched in South Africa recently) I believe will be coming soon…

The next-gen Fortuner on the TNGA-F platform is still 18-24 months away. The mild-hybrid current generation model will be a stop-gap arrangement till the new gen comes out.

Till then Toyota India has to find ways to keep moving Fortuners from their shop and showroom floors, there has been a ₹2 Lakh discount being offered on the Fortuner for a considerable amount of time now.

If I'm not wrong, the Leader variant is the base variant offered in Thailand, followed by Legender and then Sports. Curious to know at what price point it will be offered in India.

News says that Toyota has not revealed the price but said that the Fortuner Leader Edition prices will be rolled out at the dealership according to the “accessories fitted for the specific requirement”. We expect the prices for the Leader Edition to carry a premium of up to Rs 80,000.

Leader Edition features blacked-out 17-inch alloy wheels, and the company is offering three dual-tone colour options – Super white, Platinum Pearl white and Silver Metallic and all colour options get contrasting black elements. The SUV also gets unique front and rear bumper spoilers which is part of its official list of accessories and will be installed by the dealership. Inside, the SUV additionally gets a dual-tone interior, wireless charger and TPMS.
