Looks like again Diesel automatic is available only in ONE variant HTK+. This was the same scenario with the current Carens. So if you want all the features including ADAS & ventilated seats, you have to buy the gasoline variants. Is Kia trying to dissuade people from buying Diesel automatics ?

Looks definitely sharper and smarter than the Carens from the front and rear. From the sides it is more or less the same MPVish.

The Carens is already feature rich. With ADAS, Panoramic sunroof, 360 deg view, windows up-down using key etc. Kia has completed the feature list that is possible in the segment for a MPV.

I would still call it a facelift, a good one though ! - but Kia does not have enough justification to sell the older Carens side by side. For the sake of it, they are saying so, and they will slow down the production, offer some discounts and remove it all together from the portfolio. I do not see any valid reason for them to sell both in the long run.

Pricing will be interesting. Whether they agree or not, it's clear Syrios has been affected by it's obnoxious pricing and so Kia will need to be very cautious in pricing this.

The Carens and the Clavis will now mirror the Ertiga & XL6 model which is a huge hit and moneymaker for Maruti.

With the Innova being so expensive now, this can now sit comfortably between The XL6 and Innova to eat into the 18-25lakh Customer segment which is cheap enough to undercut the Innova while also giving a comparatively more premium offering to people who can’t afford the Innova but want a nicer 7 seater.

Up until now, the only proper choice a 7-seater vehicle customer had, was the XL6. While its quite a handsome car and has a very good differentiation in terms of exterior styling, it has the same interior(read dashboard) in a different shade as the cheaper Taxi - segment Ertiga.

You need to understand it from a different perspective.

Kia Syros and Sonet are from the same segment, syros is a bit more premium, and does have a similar starting point in pricing.

Same is the case here. Clavis will offer more to the buyer willing to spend more, getting the car into Alcazar territory, where buyers want a MUV for chauffer driven vehicle.

Overall, a good move by Kia according to me.

I expect that with time, Carens will be phased out or only commercial, maybe they will launch the CNG version, gunning for the Ertiga.

Absolutely poor variant spread. petrol & Diesel MT's have the maximum options. When everyone is moving towards automatics, Kia is pushing us to stick to manuals??

They could have atleast given the automatics in the top-3 variants. The Carens 6AT is an absolute mile muncher.

When I first heard that old Carens will be sold side by side, I expected Kia to restrict the non turbo petrol to the older Carens and launch the Clavis with only the Turbo engine variants.

Having Clavis with the NA petrol does not make sense.

Honestly, I am failed to understand why Carens needs Clavis instead of regular facelift.

They just added ADAS and some new features, but I do not see any other differentiation between these two.

In Maruti's case, they needed a different kind of car to sold through NEXA and XL6 makes sense, and they differentiated with 6-seater so strictly even though it is astonishingly simple to provide a bench seat in XL6.

Here is the case I hypothesize why Kia took a decision to introduce Clavis instead of just facelifting Carens.

- Carens/Clavis EV shares platform with Creta EV. This means Carens and Clavis platforms are fundamentally different even though top hat shares the design
- Because of the battery weight and overall increased weight of the car, the platform requires further strengthening than the regular Carens.
- This means, cost to manufacture Clavis may be slightly higher than Carens.
- Instead of increasing the Carens price and lose the value quotient Carens provides, Kia decided to continue sell Carens on old platform with lower price tag.
- Clavis, which shares platform with Clavis EV as well can be sold at a premium to offset the costs.
