Re: Mahindra is now entering the race for the #2 position | Slowly closing the gap to Hyundai & Tata

There is no point in getting excited by monthly or even quarterly sales, be it retail or wholesale. The full year sales tell true story. We will all be privy to it tomorrow or day after.

I dare people to write off TATA at their own peril. I saw a beautiful data from electronic component suppliers. In terms of warranty, electronic items have the highest warranty costs and the highest growth rate of warranty claims as well. This is true across the board, in India and globally. TATA, being first mover in EVs, has had the lion's share of claims. And even with Hybrids only, Suzuki has also pretty high claims, by their standards, not close to TATA though. Mahindra, having just got into the EV game recently, has also an increasing trend in terms of claims. TATA, with their experience will get better faster than others for sure.

In a nutshell, it is easier to make an electric vehicle but it is difficult to make it consistently durable and reliable. We are now an entering an era where, vehicles will malfunction more than we are used to in India. We better get used to it.

Even Tesla in US has a horrible record in terms of quality and customer satisfaction. What they are good at is quick updates and they have an awesome PR machinery led by Elon Musk. I think Mahindra in India is the closest look alike of Tesla today. The New EV twins absolutely overwhelm you with their styling and Gadgetry. I just hope they do better in terms of reliability and quality. And for once, if they do not get it right, a recall should be done rather than secretive service updates.

I mean monthly movements can mean catching a trend, although I agree how long time changes are the real guide to the performance of any carmaker.

Tata on the other hand does have aces up its sleeves. The good thing for them is Nexon and Punch providing decent sales number in off season, so they can focus on expansion through other products. Sierra is their big release this year

I think the number 2 position will keep revolving between Tata and Mahindra for the next few months until the gap between them widens by more than 10000. Hyundai is really falling behind now, and they need to pull up their socks if they want to be in the race for the number 2 position.

The ongoing three-way battle for the second position gets interesting as Mahindra's EV dispatches begin.

As the new fiscal year begins, all three automakers have expressed optimism about market growth. Hyundai is betting on its refreshed SUV lineup, including the new Creta Electric; Tata Motors is leveraging its multi-powertrain strategy across SUVs, CNG, and EVs; while Mahindra is emphasizing its advanced SUV portfolio, including the newly launched Electric Origin SUVs.

With the overall market expected to show modest growth in FY26, the competition for market share is likely to intensify further, potentially leading to more aggressive product launches and marketing strategies from all three players

M&M leaves Tata Motors and Hyundai in the dust with Spectacular April Sales. Is now India's No.2 carmaker, yet again in April.

> Maruti Suzuki 1,38704

> Mahindra 52,330

> Tata Motors 45,199

> Hyundai 42,511

> Toyota 24,833

> Kia 23,623

Are these factory dispatch figures or retail sales figures. Are we considering a manufacturer or brand as #1 on the basis of factory dispatch figures?

These are factory dispatch figures, something that the industry/ stock markets have been unanimously following since ages.

Looking at the difference between the number 2 and the next two numbers, I think it's safe to say that Mahindra has arrived at the number 2 position. Now, Mahindra needs to maintain that difference for a long time to be considered a proper number 2 player. It will be interesting to see the battle over the next few months.

Mahindra has definitely sealed the number 2 spot now.

Are we aware of:
1. New Hyundai launches this year (confirmed ones) and when.
2. Tata has Harrier EV and Sierra. Is there a confirmed timeline for these launches.

I worked in the industry from 1987 to 2011. FADA data of retail sales was considered very important. In case of commercial vehicles, we also obtained make and modelwise registration figures from local RTOs and forwarded them to the principal's regional office. They would collect this data from all the dealers for all the RTOs in the region so a comprehensive picture was available about the actual sales.

Mahindra can be confirmed as having outpaced TaMo and Hyundai only on the basis retail invoicing figures. What was sent to the dealers doesn't give the true picture.

Maruti had reported earlier that it would report the monthly sales based on registrations on vaahan portals. I suppose these are registration numbers— we had discussed this on TeamBHP earlier :

Regards,
I beg your pardon. There is no need for shifting the goalposts here, as all these years Hyundai and TaMo were declared as No 2 only based on their monthly factory despatch numbers. I don't think Mahindra needs to prove themselves by a different yardstick.

Personally, I would prefer the annual net revenue and net profits, though. Based on those parameters, Mahindra is wayyyyyy ahead of Hyundai and TaMo and was the second largest automobile manufacturer in India in 2024-2025.

Re: Mahindra is now entering the race for the #2 position | Slowly closing the gap to Hyundai & Tata

There is no guarantee that next month Mahindra says at No 2. Issue is the company suddenly pushes huge stock to the dealers and expects them to push it. But Tata Motors rationalizes so that dealers aren't left with huge inventory. I have seen this trend twice with Mahindra in the past year. Anyways they have blockbusters in the form of Scorpio, Bolero, Thar and XUV 700 and 3XO. They are doing good anyways. But yard stick is next month dispatches.
