Last week, Tata Motors launched the Altroz Racer in the Indian market. It’s a sporty version of the Altroz hatchback.

At launch, the Altroz Racer is available in three trims with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard. However, a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic could be introduced in the future.

According to Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer of Tata Motors, the carmaker might introduce an automatic gearbox in the future, depending on the demand. He further stated that Tata wanted to bring the model to the market as quickly as possible and hence the 6-speed MT was chosen as it required lower development cost and time.

The Altroz Racer’s main rival is the Hyundai i20 N Line, which is available with a choice of a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. With the introduction of the 7-speed DCA, the Altroz Racer will be able to target the higher variants of the i20 N Line.

The Altroz Racer is priced from Rs 9.50 lakh (ex-showroom). Tata expects to sell as many Altroz Racers as the i20 N Line, or even higher.

Sounds counter-intuitive.

While I appreciate the launch of a driver's car.
The omission of AT makes it look like a half hearted attempt by TAMO.

Looks like pricing might be playing an important part in the decision.

Consumers waiting for an AT and the company waiting with a MT for more consumers.
Looks like a chicken and egg situation.

And TAMO have gone overboard with this design elements.
Did all the good designers get transferred to the Sierra project / the EV division?

Finally, some better sense prevailed at Tata.

Did they mention when the DCT would be launched? I wonder why it wasn't introduced along with the manual one.

Coming on sale by 2026 Diwali!

The performance of the DCT that does duty in the Nexon is uninspiring and am now sure how this is going to do justice to the ‘Racer’ tag.

Tata and their product launches makes for a very good case study. The explanations that TaMo is giving regarding this car(saw a few on evo india instagram page), I doubt if they had sense prevailing in their minds. A DCT could do wonders to their claimed 11.3 seconds 0-100 timings.

So they are going to assess the demand of AT from the sales of the MT? What they don't realize is that, when they make statements like these, people looking for the AT will not buy this and wait for AT, and after losing patience they would buy from the competition.

At one point, we waited for a tigor/punch turbo, but Tata was still assessing demand, and we went ahead and bought the pre facelift Brezza.

Tata is known for it's 'tearing' hurry in launching cars: Harrier comes to mind, at launch it was launched with many bugs and no automatic gearbox lol: not that it's bug free now...I was thinking: when you could launch a dowdy 1.2 with a DCA why not the Racer Edition with a DCA?

I don't think they have an AT gearbox for such an application , as we have seen the Altroz volumes did not pick up , so they have installed the DCA in the Nexon perhaps to stop the Indian manufacturer of that gearbox from complaining about lack of volumes , let's just say it's barely an improvement over an AMT.

A good MT is a vastly superior choice to the DCA.

Apart from an AT Turbo and Diesel(none has though), Altroz covered and yet the demand is same since inception. So, public are clear and clever what to buy and what not to buy.

Those who don't want to buy or touch even with a barge pole will have reasons ready. Rest assured.
I can even wait for eternity for an Altroz D AT or MS Diesel Engine, knowing that they'll never be a reality.

So, how much ever we advise/request/demand/threaten Tata, they are aware of market pulse. :Cheering:

I never heard this statement even from hardcore Anti Tata Brigade anywhere else.rl:

You can never ever compare AMT vs DCA of Tatas itself. From the weak engine, we are now graduated to blame DCA?

Didnt we all blame Tatas for AMT for Nexon and now we have shifted goal post towards protection of vendor supply agreement ?

Can we now say MS has left over AMTs to change in Baleno from CVT ?

Since they are already using the Nexon's engine, I wonder how hard would it have been to use the same DCA gearbox from the Nexon.

Tata initially hurt the Altroz by taking a long time to launch the automatic and seeded ground to the competition. And it looks like it is doing it again with the Altroz racer as well. Given that tier 1 city buyers are now shifting towards automatics (much more so than a few years ago) this is a big miss.
