Re: June 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

There was a report last month that FADA was saying there was high inventory of vehicles across dealerships. Expecting numbers shipped from factory to drop in coming month(s).

[url=https://www.business-standard.com/industry/auto/fada-raises-alarm-over-rising-inventory-levels-seeks-siams-intervention-124061400955_1.html]

Quote:
The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (Fada) has raised concerns over the rising inventory levels of four-wheelers at dealerships, which have now reached a 60-day stockpile or around 550,000 units. This situation could mean a significant financial burden on dealerships due to the additional interest cost for the extended holding period.
These 60-day inventory levels are nearing the 2018-19 levels when inventory days had approached 70 days, leading to the closure of around 282 passenger vehicle dealerships.
...
MG is fast catching up with Honda. It has a bigger portfolio than Honda. Nissan-Renault and VW-Skoda are higher than Honda. With just 3 models being sold, and Amaze and City getting old, Honda is really struggling. If one looks at last month's number and this month's, City's numbers has dropped while Elevate's has gone up by roughly around same number. So people visiting Honda showroom are opting for Elevate instead of City. Elevate is cannibalizing City. Better to be cannibalized by own product than others. However, it doesn't seem to be drawing people away from Kia/Creta/VW/Skoda SUVs. Hope Honda does something more to stay relevant in Indian market.

Renault needs to bring it latest gen Duster soon. It has given up on the mid-range SUV market which is seeing high growth.

Punch is consistently around 17-18k sales per month, which is awesome! Way to go Tata! However, Harrier and Safari sales seems to be going down a lot. The twins are selling less than 3k per month.

Re: June 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Looking at the total monthly dispatch numbers over the last 2+ years, seems to have stagnated around the 350,000 unit mark +/- 5-10%. Have manufacturers hit a ceiling with respect to dispatches or are purposely keeping it at that levels to drive up waiting periods and subsequently prices? Also I assume is a function of how much prices have been going up in the last 2-3 years.

With reports of large inventory pileups, expecting dispatches to drop or remain stagnent for the rest of the year or maybe will see a bump up during the festival period.

Re: June 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Harrier and safari loosing steam since a past few months. Whereas the M&M stable in similar segment is still holding fort. 2 reasons i feel - 1) Lack of petrol option by TATA . 2) The recent quality fiasco and there poor QC and ASS stories. I really ponder over this ques. What is taking TATA so long to fix this?
On the positive note, Punch is the new Nexon for TATA. Punching high and i feel the new Punch EV is a good addition to the brand name.

While maintaining 2nd and 3rd position continuously, Hyundai and Tata sales yoy% seems to be a concern. All models reported negative growth, except Creta and Punch. Does this decline means, post Covid car hype is over and market is ready for a price correction?

Re: June 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Virtus is now consistently leading that segment. For me more surprising is Kodiaq with petrol only model doing better numbers than Tucson with both petrol and diesel.

Jeep and Honda are hitting new lows month on month. And irony is none of them have any roadmap for India and only expect the numbers to further drop.

Creta is doing almost thrice the number of Seltos, even after being nearly same car. As much as I am not a fan of Creta, it’s a fact that it is the current go to car of middle class in India.

Except, it is still the capacity constraint! As I had provided last time, the annual capacity of the Kia plant is 350000 units, which translates to about 29 K units per month. This includes export, which contribute about 25% of monthly capacity. The domestic monthly capacity is therefore around 21.7K units.

For June month this is the breakdown- Seltos- 6.3K+ Sonet- 10 K+ Carens 5.1K = 21.4K.

For May- Seltos 6.7, Carens 5.3, Sonet- 7.4 = 19.5K.

For April- Seltos 6.7, Carens 5.3 Sonet - 7.9 = 20K.

Attaching their numbers when the facelift was introduced (April- Sep 2023 numbers). The seltos got the more capacity but Carens and Sonet numbers decreased. Guess what the monthly total Kia numbers still stayed around the same 20 K mark.

As can be seen they are consistently operating at near or full capacity of their 21.7K monthly domestic production.

Kia Monthly Capacity

Also attaching Kia's export and domestic breakdown for past years, as per Wiki. I am deducing a rough 25% capacity being allotted for exports through these.

In addition to this I am sure there is some capacity being allotted for the Clavis. I am not aware of those numbers, but the fringe difference that we see in their monthly dispatches and domestic production, could be allotted for the Clavis.

I feel they are on the right track and don't want to be another Ford by building/purchasing another plant and loosing millions through it. They should first extend the dealer network into the hinterlands of India, and then focus on increasing their plant capacity.

On the other hand, I am surprised no one is talking about the extremely low numbers for Kushaq and Taigun. Both sold 1.1 K and 1.5 K respectively. For comparison MG Astor which has been declared as a sales dud, has been selling anywhere between 0.9K and 1.1K for past few months. Is it impressive that MG with such a small dealer network and presence in India (compared to VW-Skoda nearly 20 year stint in India), is pulling in almost similar numbers? Or is it how far VW-Skoda have fallen?

Yes. As the other news has been circulating, there is inventory worth Rs. 60,000 Cr in the market. This accounts to inventory of roughly 2 months.

Given that this market share is based on factory dispatches, I even think the actual sales could be slightly different. After a couple of years, we are seeing discounts across manufacturers across segments. I guess we might even see more discounts and price corrections. Good time to be in, if you are looking to buy a car.

Re: June 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Dont know why Honda is dropping, the Elevate is a good product. They definitely need to put some life in the City though.

Jeep on the other hand will keep dropping, the after sales service and product quality leaves too much to be desires. They might exit like Ford did and keep the factory just for exports and Nexon EV production.

Re: June 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Good to see an uptick in Honda Elevate's numbers - this I'm guessing is because of making 6 Airbags and 3 rear headrests as standard.

Coming to think of it, Elevate is doing really good numbers as exports. Honda announced 5K units exports, most of it coming from Elevate exports to Japan. (my guess, simply going by their past export numbers and these export numbers have jumped since ).

https://www.hondacarindia.com/press-...s-in-june-2024

It is funny how Elevate and other internationally succesful cars (Kicks, Jeeps, Fords) have failed to make a dent in the Market while the same car is doing much better in a more crowded markets like Japan. In India, more bling = more sales.

Re: June 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Isn't this a history in making? I have never seen any car other than a Maruti on top spot. This is the first time I am seeing a non-Maruti Punch on top. Or is it that I am not following this enough?

In the VAG portfolio, the sedans seems to be selling better. Clearly the mini-SUV form buyers are still preferring other brands. Hopefully the VAG will do much more than sticker job in future to improve sales.

Re: June 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Fronx sales dropping from May month 12.6k to June 9.6k is concerning. The delta variants dont seem to be a value for money for consumers in 1.2L engine trim and are switching to Baleno which provides high VFM quotient and the June Baleno sales numbers say it all, 14.8K in June compared to May 12.8K!
