N_C bhaiya,

tell me can we indians afford quality???

people are more interested in saving money with acceptable quality levels than having to spend more on great cars...its sad but true.

Tata as a company is offering people what they want.

N yes i agree they shud have done better with the quality levels when they were exporting the indica.

Drifter ,

we r getting off topic here but tell me would the scorpio have sold as well as it has here in any other better market without safety and crash test ratings?

we can afford quality but we never want to !!

its like these are the same, and this is cheaper ..so buy the cheap thing...what we dont understand is that it hurts in the long run !!

cheers

Bottom Line : If u think from the point of view of not defending any of these 2 cars for unecessary reasons......Scorpio will beat...or rather beats the Safari right and left in power, looks, sales, engine, gearbox....and to be frank even build quality!!! Check out the dealers!!
Cmon... u r comparing a car.. launced around 1998 with a car launched 4 years later...and continously being improved!!! Dont forget..it even has a engine developed with AVL...thats Austrian Vehicle Lab!!

looks is a matter of personal preference and to me a safari beats scorpio in looks hands down ...the safari has an awesome road presence anyday whereas the scorpio just looks like a luxurious jeep ( thanx to that chunky grill)

The areas where Safari scores over scorpio are interior space , comfort ,ride quality, handling ( forgot those eerie scorpio tales huh ?) and most importanly braking ( what use is all that power if you can't stop at the time of emergencies)

guys, now that this safari v/s the scorpio debate has been going on for so long...it seriously sets me wondering how would it be to fit a scorpio's engine and gearbox to a safari ..that way u can have the best of both the worlds...what say

Wait till the safari gets the 3.0 litre crdi, then we'l see how the scorpio will match up.

waiting for that day!
but again it wouldnt be in the scorpio range as it would compete with the endeavour.
and btw isnt the base versiojn of safari 7.2lacs on road after all the discounts and all???
how much is a similar version of scorpio?ie WITH heater/demister,power windows etc??

Well drifter....if u dont know.. .Mahindra are developing a CRDI engine with an international firm to fit it in the Bolero and the Scorpio!!!
So.. when the Safari gets its first new powerplant...Scorpio will be getting its second new powerplant...over the original one!! ( Original engine was changed to the Chain Drive engine!!!..and now it will be available with a CRDi pretty soon!!

And by the way... Mahindra are also getting a smoother gearbox to all their models including the Scorpio before the Euro III norms drop in!!

Stratos,

Agreed that mahindra are improving the scorpio at a faster rate than what Tatas are doing with the safari...

but mahindra really has only one vehicle to look after...that is the scorpio and the bolero doesnt have too much share in the sales charts...you see the scorpio is the only vehicle on which the mahindras are concentrating on.

Whereas, Tata has the indica, indigo and the marina to look after as well. I can imagine that it tough for them to use their resources on all vehicles at once.

the tata has one platfrom...the indica and indigo and they still not doing a pretty job yaar.

whereas the safari hardly bothers the sales charts..maybe thats y they neglecting it.....or they are neglecting it thats why it has no sales ...i wonder if tata are caught in their own circle ??

N_C,

Obviously the safari gets less attention because the main bread n butter models are the indica indigo, but it is not that tata has been completely ignoring the safari, they are quietly and slowly improving it.

This just in

The Tata Safari isn't financed by quite a few companies. The reasons are obvious.

The Scorpio too isn't any great shakes. 7 years of development and it couldn't sort out the handling issue? Regarding maintenance issues, drive a Scorpio with some TLC please. Its turbo does tend to leak turbo oil, but that is primarily because most people forget to idle the car for the mandatory half-1 minute which is required for any TCed diesel car or any diesel car for that matter.

Tata doesnt have any excuse to sell the Safari in its current form at the price it dictates. The 3.0 CRDi might be in the testing phase, but Tata has deferred all SUV/MUV new platform launches now till 2006. So if it does come in early 2005, i'd be more than surprised.

The competition that Tata faces in the UK is far greater than in any other market. Their abyssmal sales shows you the reason why Tata has a long-long way to go till it really starts competing even with the Koreans in these markets.
