Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

Looks pretty cool!

But does it actually fall under the 4m length that is essential for our sub-compact segment? I could see numbers for wheelbase but didn't find anything for the overall dimensions.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

All the technical data for the model has not yet been officially released. However, Brazilian automotive media outlets report that the model appears to have the same wheelbase as the Polo and Nivus, i.e. 2.56 m. However, in terms of overall length, it is highly likely that the Tera will measure close to 4.10 m like its competitors (Pulse and Kardian).

If VW does decide to launch a new entry-level crossover in India, it is likely to use the Kylaq as a starting point, using much of the Skoda model's structure while adapting only the Tera's design.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

When I bought my Slavia in 2024, the service advisor mentioned that Volkswagen was hesitant to invest further in petrol cars and was instead focusing on an EV strategy for India.

However, there hasn't been any significant news on that front. Meanwhile, Skoda has been pushing hard for a sub-4-meter compact SUV.

It's becoming increasingly clear that VW lacks a concrete strategy for India. Despite having the Kylaq platform ready, they are delaying their next launch until 2026, seemingly waiting to see how the Kylaq performs before making a move. This hesitation is a clear sign of reluctance.

With talks of stake sales and product launch delays, I just hope the German brand gets everything right soon.

The Skoda service advisor isn't really a great source for VAG strategy in India. There are far better ones including this forum. VW India is unlikely to go back to the sub compact segment based on their experience with India specific models. So they are focusing on the mid segment and CBUs & CKDs.

Electrification is delayed because the Indian policy on EV manufacturing is still in a flux, there are now talks of EV imports at 5% duty which would greatly simplify their strategy roadmap.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

As much as I would like to see this offering in India, looking at the way Skoda/VW group is functioning here, there is no way the car in the pictures will come here.

Skoda/VW group has been extremely lazy off-late, except investing in MQB A0 IN, they have not done much, they have almost stopped assembly of all other CKD offerings, I see this as a huge mistake as many buyers are aspirational and are looking to upgrade to higher quality cars that are priced well (look at the numbers Roxx, Scorpio N and XUVOO are bringing in for M&M), this is where the local assembly with higher local content for cars like Octavia, Karoq, Kamiq, Tiguan, Kodiaq, Tera etc will help them, Importing some global offerings in limited numbers will not help their case (by all means please bring cars like Octavia VRS, Golf-R, GTI, Tiguan R/GTI in limited numbers), but cars like the regular Octavia, Kodiaq, Superb etc need to be assembled here to sell well and make an impact in the Indian consumers' car buying process (even the mighty Range Rover and Range Rover Sport is assembled here now!)

Also, Skoda/VW need to electrify some of their cars with minimal investments (please draw some inspiration from Nexon EV and Creta EV), EVs need not be BEVs to be successful, they just need to be good cars that are priced well at the end of the day.

while this may be true - being the spiritual successor - I see the Tera exactly opposite of that. As the "Anti-Polo" if I may call that.

Not a single straight line to talk of, no chiseled sharp edges, angular light housings and of course no low-rider stance. I'll keep harping - what has the car world come to!
Making cars taller instead of making roads better. Sigh.

Also goes to show again how Brazil is actually a better car market for global manufacturers compared to India, which claims to be developing so fast in everything. Something is broken badly here. Brazil tends to always be shown as poor, crime infested in our movies, but the cars they have access to - are quite a lot more in list .

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

I recently visited Chakan (Pune) on a business trip and passed by the VW Škoda plant there, they have a very big parking yard for cars which is clearly visible from the road, I think I saw these cars parked there, at that time I was very curious to know which car is that, now I think it is Tera. Hope they have something exciting to give us in this car

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

I really do not understand Volkswagen India's strategy. How can a company not have any presence in the most happening sub 4 meter segment. Have they actually given up on mass market? It is not even that they are doing exceptionally well in the segments they have chosen to participate in.

Actually they are doing quite well in the sedan space above the 4m length. They are currently the best sellers in that segment with the Virtus and Slavia.

The Tera, based on the Kylaq platform with the 1.0L TSI would be a great car. Here's also hoping for a RS version with the 1.5L. That would be quite a pocket rocket!

VW Tera, entry level to get the 1.0 MPI NA engine with a low sticker price.

Quote:
Spotted for the first time without camouflage, the entry-level version reveals more details of what to expect at launch in May
Quote:
the prototype seen on the streets of Ubatuba, on the north coast of the state of São Paulo, stands out for bringing smaller rims than the 17" alloy wheels of the top of the line. In the prototype, the car features wheels that appear to be 15" rims with hubcaps and also does not have chrome details, indicating that we may be seeing the basic version of the new SUV for the first time.
Quote:
naturally aspirated engine version of the Tera, which should bring the same 1.0 MPI three-cylinder engine, with a maximum power of 84 hp and torque of 10,3 kgfm associated with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Quote:
For the rest, it seems to maintain the same LED lighting as the High version, with daytime running circulation forming an exclusive front signature, with fractional lighting in two segments over the headlights. The entry-level version also maintains the chrome fillet connecting the two headlights.

VW Tera will be the smallest SUV, the MQB A0 base, the new SUV should be in the range of 4 meters in length, smaller than T-Cross and Nivus, with a wheelbase of 2,566 mm.

Under the hood, the 1.0 TSI engine, widely used by Volkswagen in Brazil, is already confirmed. Rumors indicate that it will have 116 hp (the same configuration as the Polo) to differentiate it from the more powerful Nivus and T-Cross, which have 128 hp, but this option has not been ruled out in the more expensive versions. The transmission will be manual in the entry-level versions and 6-speed automatic in the intermediate and top-of-the-line versions.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

I've already started thinking about what to replace the current car with when the extended warranty runs out. Because, well, it is a DCT. Also because, in true bhpian fashion, thinking about it is a good way to spend free time. I've got over a year to decide before said warranty runs out, but again, you know, in true bhpian fashion the thought process starts way ahead...

The default choice in my head so far is a used Taigun at say the 11-12L range. The 1 liter because torque converter.

But if VW launch this Tera by then, it will be tempting to spend a little more and go for a new mid-variant Tera instead of a used Taigun. Likely to set me back by 3L-4L more, but it will be a new car and, to be honest if these pictures are indicative, the car is going to look gorgeous!

Tera looks like it will tick all the boxes. Of course, the current Kylaq is already an option, but in my opinion I like the VW clean lines a lot more than the Skoda designs.

Let's see. The last we've heard is a May launch (?), I hope they come out with this and don't overprice it! The dear Polo needs replacing! And I hope they keep the torque converter on this just like on the Kylaq! No more dual-clutches for me.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

Volkswagen hints at an entry level model - Is it the Kylaq sibling?

- Volkswagen Polo brand revival likely in India.

- VW India Chief Ashish Gupta seems to be hinting at a potential revival of Polo brand in India. Probably even a different body style altogether. That’s because Polo has an incredibly robust brand recall in India,

Mostly probably it's gonna be a Kylaq equivalent. Coz bringing a hatchback at this point of time makes zero sense when the demand of hatch's has gone down completely.

VW's Kylaq equivalent will do wonders in sales if Polo nomenclature is used. The brand Polo is having a phenomenal craze in India. In addition, the interior-exterior execution of VW will be far better than a Skoda.

People buy cars based on the merits of a car and whether it suits them. It is stupid to name after a car which was in different segment/body style. Tata Safari and Maruti Baleno sell not because they have names which were popular once but because people like them.
It would be a joke to call a tall riding Kylaq derivative as Polo. Also, it straight away robs them any future opportunity to bring the real Polo here.
