re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Voted for Thar ROXX - the car that makes you feel like you should simply buy one for no reason now comes with practicality.

I know there's only 1 vote, but would like to call out a few:

Also loved: Windsor and Seal. Windsor is the best family EV for the city and the Seal (you have got to see one in person) has an appeal like few others. Both have the numbers in their spec sheet and happy owners backing them. But one is a glorified van and one is a super rare sporty sedan.

Car I hate on the list (this could be a new survey category): new X-trail. It's a lesson 101 on how to destroy a brand (underpowered+ overpriced+ fwd SUV in the premium segment)

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Voted for Thar ROXX as it is THE CAR to have now and with 4 cylinders with both petrol and diesel which can be used in city and off-roading.

I would have voted for new Dzire but due to being a 3 cylinder petrol version only opted for Thar ROXX. Most of my life I have driven 3 cylinders cars and now after driving my current 4 cylinder car I can feel the difference.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

My top 3 picks for this year,
  • Maruti Dzire - 5* GNCAP Rated. Maruti finally answered the Crash test question paper which Tata & Mahindra were topping and came out with flying colours. We'll definitely miss the fun factor of the K12 4-cylinder engine but we lost one cylinder to gain the 5 stars! (just an analogy)
  • Citroen Basalt - It's very easy for Tata to launch the Curvv but for a company like Citroen its commendable. At the same time, it's very hard to recommend one though the product is very good with great handling and dynamics!
  • Mahindra Thar Roxx - Cash making rockstar for Mahindra! I'm against the fact that the difference from the base to the top variant is more than 10 lacs. This is insane and makes no sense, one can get another vehicle with that price difference. Mahindra is taking advantage of the customer here!
From the heart I would like vote for the Basalt but this time the mind goes to the Dzire.

Happy Driving,

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Voted for Citroen Bassalt. The list of cars were a wild mix. Below is my perspective or method of elimination.

Elimination reasons:

1. All EVs are mostly treated as 2nd or 3rd car in a household. Till date ICE cars are treated as primary vehicle (being all rounder).
2. JV cars with only the logo and minor cosmetic changes sounds like a political agenda changing name of existing places or railway stations with no actual benefit.
3. Super expensive small cars sounds more like a luxury item/accessory for the a selective segment. Hence ruled out.
4. Special mention to Dzire for achieving 5 stars in safety and making its peers nervous says something about the leading brand in Indian market. I wish them luck and hope they get a design team who can come out of copy paste (its very addictive).
5. A car which looks so good that you get all the attention. It can drive anywhere and has the most creative ad agency to market it. So good that it doesn't matter its bumpy, over priced, negligible boot space etc. now has a stretched out brother. Maybe good for reels and hills but mostly stays at home. Sadly not practical enough for me.

Last rat standing: Bassalt which has best in class suspension and a smooth TC transmission does the job. Citroen is trying hard to get in the game and is bringing new things to the table. They could have started with that. I like it!

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Can't vote yet for some reason, however this is my first post here after years of incognito browsing.

However, my vote would go to the Maruti Dzire for the following reasons:
  1. By virtue of sheer numbers, this is one of the most important cars in the market right now. MSIL has made all the right choices, given it crash safety, practicality and dollops of features albeit built to a cost.
  2. Not pretending to be something it is not. It is a sub 4m sedan, marketed to exactly the right crowd unlike the "SUVs" we have. I can imagine middle class family heads seeing this as an reliable, ideal car and not having to compromise on safety, looks and features anymore
  3. While definitely not an enthusiast's car, I'm sure the car can pull decently fast with about 50k of mods and 91 octane petrol. Considering the overall costs, it becomes a serious rival to the 3.8m hatchbacks like punch, and even lower variants of sub 4m SUVs like the Nexon, as it undercuts them all while offering more day to day value as a workhorse.
My other choices were Citroen Basalt - lost due to exemplarily bad marketing, lack of showrooms and ASS, uncertainty about Stellantis' future in India (and the world). Great product, but nothing for it to lean on.

..and Thar ROXX. I loved this vehicle the moment it was launched, but after seeing it in showrooms, it lost the charm.

I personally value VFM at a budget and while 5D Thar is an amazing overall product with great performance and drive (for a BOF), the practicality factor was just lacking for me with poorly designed interior spaces and other minor design niggles that have been talked of here.
The car is about making a statement and feeling like a king of the road more practically than a 3D Thar, but when the new features will trickle down, Scorpio N and XUV700 will make more sense to the thinking customer.
To the person who buys with their heart, how long before the Thar ROXX also gets a KTM like reputation with absolutely useless loud visual modifications.
To the person who really wants to off-road, the OG Thar seems better, with less electronics, more capabilities and engine options as well as mod potential.
Thus the ROXX lost as it seems focused more on fluff in my eyes.

No offense to anyone, and hoping to post a lot more here if time permits. Do feel free to express opinions, like most others here, I love discussing cars.

Dzire for me. 5 star safety rated, fuel efficient, reliable and fairly decent performance in a affordable package deserves a COTY. However we all know which car will be the winner on Team BHP :-).

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Voted for Thar Roxx. Among the list, actual eligible ones in terms of effort put in by the manfacturer to attract mass market segments were below 3.

1. Thar Roxx
2. Swift Dzire
3. Basalt

And Thar Roxx definitely stands out. It Rockzz for being a whole package & providing good options at multiple price points.

Can't vote right now because I am a newbie. But my vote goes for Maruti Dzire.
Thar Roxx comes a close 2nd. But we all saw that coming from Mahindra. But no one saw Maruti pulling out a rabbit from the hat (especially the 5 star GNCAP rating).

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Must say this is a year where one was solely tempted to say, “none of the above”, but I finally decided to pick the Curvv ahead of the Thar Rox.

Before turning to the top two contenders, let me talk about some of those that received honourable mentions.

First the Dzire - finally Maruti made a car which meets the 5 star safety test. Of course we all know Suzuki can make safe cars - but the fact that they decided to sell one in India is a big step forward.

Next the BYD Seal. In most circumstances, it would be a deserving Car of the Year. But as a Chinese import in India, it is too risky a proposition, and the fact that it is a low slung sedan which is not suitable for most Indian roads becomes one more reason to disqualify it.

The Tata Punch EV is a very nice car - but I would consider it a variant of the old Punch and was surprised to find it in the list.

So what was left was a two car battle.

The Thar Roxx will almost certainly win this poll. But the odd kink in the C pillar, the absence of a 4 WD petrol, and the fact that it is actually a Scorpio N in disguise made it lose by a Whisker.

And that brings us to the Curvv - a good looking car, with nice interiors, albeit a trifle narrow. But with great power trains in petrol, diesel and EV formats, there is one for everyone, and that makes it the Car of the Year 2024 for me.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

I have only recently joined Team BHP, so I can't vote but if I were to vote, I would vote for Maruti Suzuki Dzire. Although I felt the engine to be a downgrade compared to the old 4 banger K series, I still think it more than makes up for it in the safety department with not just a 5-star GNAP rating, but with a stable body shell which was not expected from MSIL even in my dreams. Even the design looks elegant and tasteful while most cars nowadays look a bit overly flashy. Combined with the fact that Suzuki engines are known to last forever with simple wallet-friendly maintenance, now you got a solid car for a middle-class family.
Sure, it won't win any races or cross rivers, but it can you the world for cheap and that kind of financial freedom is something I truly appreciate.

Voted for Dzire because of how good an overall package it is.

Reliable, safe, spacious, fuel efficient and extremely practical. Just not very aspirational and appealing.

I did consider voting for thar ROXX but thats more of a lifestyle vehicle.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Voted for Thar Roxx, although it's a stupid name. The car looks like a Jeep Wrangler and is pretty capable. Also, it doesn't break the bank, relatively speaking.

This is from someone who has no experience with cars and doesn't even know how to drive one. So take my vote less seriously.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Roxx has been the highlight of the year no doubt. The anticipation with which the country waited for it did not go waste. It sure is a great rig, with some quirks such as the rear seating entry.

My second pick would be the Basalt. Thats one car that I feel is a no frill daily car. Yes built to a cost but which car is not.
