re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Voted for Basalt.

Reasons for my choice:
- 6 speed TC. Works for City and highways too!
- Excellent ride handling. Made me feel Bangalore roads are almost flat.
- Minimalistic and useful features. IMO all the must have's are there, no fancy features like ventilated seats, ADAS etc which just shoots up the on-road price.

I've listed my reasons in detail here if you wish to read.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

I can't vote yet but if I could, it would be Thar Roxx for me. Simply because I have no need for a new car and I still ended up in Mahindra showroom, took a test drive, loved it, came back making up my mind that I need it to book. Finally, better financial sense prevailed. But the Thar Roxx tugs at your heart the right way. Hence is my COTY.

I voted for MG Windsor. It was a close call between Roxx, Basalt and Windsor. But I love what MG have been able to give at that price point and the options to either lease or buy the battery. Definitely encourages more people to consider EVs. Hoping to see more such options from other OEMs.

When I see sooo many people voting for a car that's too large to drive in the city, almost impossible to park, gives relatively terrible mileage, is sure to have niggles and hasn't been driven by most people voting for it, then I know... men will be men! And when it comes to cars, we vote from our hearts!

Lovely points here and that is why we are Automobile fans. We love some cars and that one may not fully solve our daily needs/use case so we will not be in the situation to buy it/afford it. Most of us have a car or two already so we can’t keep buying the best car. But we choose to vote for the good ones each year.

Thar ROXX is my pick.

The vehicle is a complete package with mighty road presence and off-road capability. However, I still believe Mahindra could have named it better. :P

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

I voted for Thar Roxx. What a complete package. Another winner from Mahindra stable. And seems they are going to walk with COTY for the record 6th time, after XUV 500, Marazzo, Thar 3D, XUV7OO, Scorpio-N !

- Great looks, strong presence.
- Highly customizable
- Serious off-roader and daily office commuter in one package
- Negotiates patchy city roads AND nasty narrow speed breakers easily

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Bagging a massive 43% of the total ~2000 BHPian votes, the Thar Roxx is the Team-BHP Car of 2024 ! In a sea of mundane crossovers, the BoF Mahindra Thar Roxx brings fun, style, toughness and excitement. Big congratulations to Mahindra for rolling out yet another blockbuster SUV. Congratulations are also in order to the runner-up Maruti Dzire for bringing “5-star GNCAP safety” to the masses in what is a very well-rounded compact sedan, and to the MG Windsor EV in 3rd place for its proposition of practicality + value for money pricing + quality + space + feature list. Must say, it was quite a fight for the final podium spot between the MG Windsor & Tata Curvv.

The Thar Roxx has brought joy & practicality to the market, the Dzire brings safety to the affordable segment, while the Windsor is the kind of EV that India needs for electric cars to go more mainstream.

Our last car of the year (Innova Hycross) didn’t dominate the poll like this (32% of votes), nor did the car of 2022 (Scorpio-N with 28% votes). But the Thar Roxx is one SUV that appeals to the sensible & practical buyer, as well as the one wearing his / her heart on the sleeve.

I too had voted for the Thar Roxx with the following reasoning:

It’s the kind of car that proves you don’t need to spend big money to have fun. Engage 4x4 and you’ll be laughing in delight…although I might add, its brute character makes it fun on the road too. It’s the kind of car that appeals to a rich family from South Bombay / South Delhi, a well-to-do farmer from the hinterlands, newly married couples from the Bangalore IT world & an everyday college girl.

Click here to read my Thar Roxx review!

I love cars with character and the Thar Roxx finally combines practicality with style (3-door Thar is too impractical). And it’s just not the additional 2 doors. Mahindra smartly avoided stretching the 3-door Thar to make the 5-door Thar. Instead, they used a completely different platform! As a result, the Thar Roxx’s drive is more comparable to a Scorpio-N than the 3-door Thar. The Thar Roxx is powerful, refined, has nice interiors, liveable ride quality (but still bumpy, unsettled & busy), safety equipment & more. Get one, modify the heck out of it, customize it uniquely to your tastes and have a blast in life.

I was reading the posts on the Thar Roxx launch thread and have never seen any new car launch with so many BHPians saying "I want to buy it, I want to book it, I don't need it but I still want one". This SUV has an air of desirability around it. The market wholeheartedly agrees with these sentiments. The Thar Roxx garnered 176,000 bookings in 60 minutes! Although, once potential owners test-drive it on the road, there will be many cancellations too (unsettled ride quality, body-on-frame disadvantages, can’t match the finesse of same-price crossovers).

Mahindra’s ability to churn out one blockbuster after another is commendable = XEV 9e, Thar Roxx, XUV 3XO, Scorpio-N, XUV700, 3-door Thar…we are witnessing an era of Mahindra going from "good" to "greatness". From being a maker of crude’ish UVs to being the undisputed KING of 10-30 lakh SUVs & Crossovers.

Quite a coincidence that the 3 door version of the Thar had also won the COTY with a 40+% vote share

Well my vote is for the Tata Curvv.

I really like the way it is displayed. There are little flaws in the car but I can vouch for the standard it sets when you're driving it on the road.

I feel I am driving a luxurious car and undoubtedly people give a glance whenever they notice the Tata Curvv.

Well deserved victory for ROXX & Mahindra. 2024 has been a marvelous year for the automaker and us customers.

Mahindra took the risk of giving all creature comforts on a vehicle which usually attracts only hard-core off-roaders and succeeded in matching the hype. Now, they should focus on their quality control and ensure niggle free vehicles.

A big shout-out to MG for reviving interest in the EVs by launching Windsor.

Expecting all other OEMs to pull up their socks and get in the race. 2025 appears promising

I respectfully disagree with your analysis that the Thar Roxx is akin to some form of OEM jugaad. It is a completely new vehicle, built from the ground up in all aspects, with extensive research and testing involved in its development. It is definitely not a jugaad like the Tata Curvv! (No offense to Curvv owners)
Oh, I am by no means saying that Roxx is jugaad! I am saying that the OEM gave something in a structured / organized way what was being done by customers through jugaad. Or in other words, the OEM took the customer jugaad efforts and came up with a structured solution that addressed the need. It is a compliment, not derogatory.

My only point was, that since part of that I had seen done in jugaad, while a great vehicle, it was not as novel to me as the Seal was, and hence I voted for the Seal by a narrow margin.

Expected result and 100% deserved one

If we see the results from 2009 till 2024, Mahindra dominates "Team-Bhp Car of the Year" polls (6 wins out of 16). Except Marazzo, all these 5 products are blockbusters.

Shows their relentless efforts and commitment to the market. Kudos to Mahindra.

Re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2024 | EDIT: It's the Thar Roxx

Even though Mahindra had done a lots of hardwork but it's design is a copy of its original is a fact. Just this alone pushed me to select Curvv as my choice. It's a fairly a genuine effort by a homegrown manufacturer. After my recent drives in a Punch I am amazed at the leap Tata had taken from its humble Indica. Only favourable consideration with Thar ROXX is the down to earth positioning and the robust engineering to take on Indian (non existent) road conditions and the price it's offered compared to it's original. For once we feel like how its to be Chinese. Functional, affordable and not original. No offense I had booked ROXX and I drive a 2 door Thar.
